Featuring Matthew Barney in conversation with Kitty Scott and Jorn Weisbrodt As part of the Luminato Festival's multi-faceted view of revolutionary artist Matthew Barney, we present a conversation with the artist in partnership with the Art Gallery of Ontario. Barney will be joined in conversation by Kitty Scott, the AGO's Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, and Jorn Weisbrodt, Luminato's Artistic Director, at the AGO's Baillie Court. Barney's landmark RIVER OF FUNDAMENT, making its Canadian premiere at the Festival, will be their primary focus, their discussion will touch on some of his earlier works, including the DRAWING RESTRAINT video series, selections from which are being presented at the AGO from May 31 through September 28. Matthew Barney Born in 1967 in San Francisco, Barney lives and works in New York. Since graduating from Yale in 1989, Barney has made a rapid impact on the art world with exhibitions at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (1991, 1996 and 2000), Documenta 9 (1992), Tate Britain (1995) and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (2003). In 1994 Barney embarked on the CREMASTER cycle, possibly Barney's most complex work, which consists of five feature length films that he wrote, directed and performed in. The cycle explores the creation of form gender and sexuality constructing a personal mythology. Alongside each film, Barney created sculptures, photographs and drawings relating to the themes and imagery within the cycle. An exhibition of the whole cycle went on public display at the Guggenheim in New York in 2002. Barney's Drawing Restraint series explores resistance and creativity, in particular, how the body respond to increasing resistance. Drawing Restraint 9, perhaps the centrepiece of the whole series is a 143-minute film shot on digital video and transferred to 35mm film, featuring Barney and the musician Bjork. The film fuses Japanese history and culture with Barney's own interests in metamorphosis and indeterminate states. Kitty Scott Kitty Scott is curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Previously she was director, Visual Arts at The Banff Centre, chief curator at the Serpentine Gallery, London, and curator, Contemporary Art at the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa. She has written extensively on contemporary art for catalogues and journals and recently edited the publication Raising Frankenstein: Curatorial Education and Its Discontents (Koenig Books, Cologne, 2010). Jorn Weisbrodt Jorn Weisbrodt has an international reputation for collaborating on landmark projects with some of the most prestigious arts organizations around the globe, including La Scala di Milano, the Spoleto Festival, the Barbican Centre, the Bolshoi Theatre, the Lincoln Center Festival, and the Manchester International Festival. Prior to joining the Luminato Festival he served as Executive Director for RW Work Ltd. representing and managing the work of legendary visual artist and director Robert Wilson. As Director of The Watermill Center he was responsible for incubating exciting cross-disciplinary performances and installations, establishing partnerships with institutions including the Guggenheim Museum, the Baryshnikov Arts Center, Kampnagel Hamburg, the Donaufestival, the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, and Columbia University. He also oversaw the launching of an international residency for emerging artists.
