DEA Agent Joins Marijuana Industry

While Washington State is still adjusting to many changes since legalizing recreational marijuana—from growing space size to the number of licenses to give out—one of the biggest changes may be Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) employees going to work in the private sector. Reason TV sat down with Patrick Moen, a former supervisory special agent with the DEA, who now works as compliance director and senior counsel at Privateer Holdings, a private equity firm that invests in cannabis. "The more law enforcement officers admit that prohibition [of marijuana] is wrong, the better off society is going to be," said Moen. At the DEA he specialized in wiretaps and worked on cases varying from busting heroin and methamphetamine rings to rooting out pot and painkiller dealers. "Taking that first step is often the most difficult one, it just so happened that I was the one to take it." Moen says that he got a lot of support from friends and former colleagues, the latter of which privately asked him for jobs. He says people may be surprised to know that an overwhelming majority of agents he interacted with didn't feel marijuana should be a priority for the DEA. "Well, my own personal point of view is that drugs like methamphetamine and heroin have legitimate, observable, harmful effects to the user and people around the user and you definitely cannot say the same thing about cannabis," says Moen. Reason TV presented Moen with numbers from the Department of Justice's 2013 National Drug Threat Assessment indicating an increase in the availability of methamphetamine and heroin in the U.S. "There are some cases of mine in particular that I am very proud of that I can look back at and say that I had a measurable effect on this community for some period of time before it bounced back," says Moen. "I don't think anyone was under the illusion that we were going to stop it, that we were going to win the war on drugs." Moen is aware of the criticism of the DEA and the war on drugs in general. "I think there is a certain subset of the population that views DEA agents as jackbooted thugs, that have an agenda to oppress them.... But it's just another job, and there are guys there that are competent, and there are guys there that are less so, but they are all trying to do the job the best that they can." Privateer Holdings is looking to invest in businesses that surround the legal marijuana industry like the cannabis review site, Leafly.com, which also helps users find different strains and locations of cannabis around them. Leafly claims to have a website and app that generate more than more than 2.3 million visits a month. The private cannabis industry isn't without worries though. CEO at Privateer Holdings, Brenden Kennedy, told Bloomberg TV on January 28, that banking in the marijuana industry was nearly impossible because banks were concerned with the taboo nature of the product. "We have been kicked out of two banks, two large banks, very unceremoniously," said Kennedy, who also said at least one employee at Privateer Holdings had experienced trouble with his personal bank account. "The biggest risk we see is from the federal government. Bureaucrats and politicians are always the last ones to accept change," said Kennedy. Approximately 10:07. DEA Raids Phat Stuff as Part of Nationwide Crackdown 2014-05-07

Reports in national media claim the DEA has raided synthetic drug suppliers in 25 states, but Keene's Phat Stuff hasn't sold synthetic drugs since mid-2013. According to the sealed warrant, which you can see here, the agents were taking all smoking devices, as well as sales records from 2011-today. The approximately dozen agents spent five hours boxing up thousands of dollars in various pipes, water pipes, hookahs, and accessories. After 4pm, they loaded it all in the back of a Uhaul and took off with the loot at approximately 4:20pm. During the raid, one agent stood out back smoking a cigarette. I asked him if he found it ironic that he's smoking a cigarette while he and his fellow thieves are stealing tobacco-smoking devices from the store. At least two agents had balaclavas on outside the store, but not inside. The cowardly man exiting the heist vehicle in the picture on the right, a Uhaul truck, will be seen in the videos without his mask on. Stay tuned for that! In response to us recording video through the storefront windows which had already been mostly obscured by newspaper and black tarp, agents papered over as much of the remaining viewable area as possible, in desperate attempts to avoid accountability for their craven actions. Keene police officers Jason Short and Todd Lawrence took turns guarding the front door. As the agents loaded the getaway vehicle with dozens of DEA-branded cardboard boxes full of thousands of dollars worth of pipes and accessories, an angry group of Keene inhabitants gathered to give the agents a piece of their minds. Nations Largest Cocaine Smuggler Revealed: The DEA

For decades, it has been rumored the United States government was secretly sponsoring the smuggling of cocaine into the country. Federal officials have long denied such speculation, pointing out the billions of dollars spent intercepting drugs. Newly released documents, and testimony from Justice Department and DEA officials now show the stories of government running cocaine are true. An investigation conducted in Mexico found the American government allowed that country's largest drug cartel, Sinaloa, to operate without fear of persecution. That groups is estimated to be responsible for 80 percent of the cocaine coming into the country through Chicago. In exchange, the leaders of Sinaloa provided the DEA information on rival gangs. The drug cartel working with the federal government is run by . He is considered to be the world's most powerful drug trafficker. In addition to Chicago, his group also maintains cocaine operations in several major cities around the country. Written statements were provided to a U.S. District Court in Chicago, confirming the alliance between the DEA and Mexico's largest cocaine cartel. The written testimony, combined with other evidence, shows DEA officials met with leaders of the Sinaloa cartel more than 50 times between 2000 and 2012. This would mean DEA-authorized drug smuggling goes back to at least the beginning of the George W. Bush administration, and continued for year under Barack Obama. One of the groups leaders, Vincente Zambada-Niebla, claims the American government also sent military-grade weapons to Sinoloa. According to the latest revelations, it was these weapons which were part of the Fast-and-Furious scandal. Automatic firearms which disappeared during that operation, led by Eric Holder, were used to kill U.S. Border agents. This latest evidence and testimony points toward a massive scandal, involving both Republican and Democratic administrations. At the very least, this provides the best evidence so far that the Federal government was sponsoring the smuggling of billions of dollars of cocaine into the United States. Worse still, weapons purchased for the U.S. military may have been sent to the cartel, and used to kill American agents. Those actions transcend any partisan politics. The common names for the species include variants on water, swamp or black 'moccasin', 'viper', 'cottonmouth', and 'rattler'.[2] Many of the common names refer to the threat display, where this species will often stand its ground and gape at an intruder, exposing the white lining of its mouth. The diet consists mainly of fish and frogs, but is otherwise highly varied and, uniquely, has even been reported to include carrion. The specific name is derived from the Latin words piscis and voro, which mean "fish" and "to eat".[3] Three subspecies are currently recognized, including the nominate subspecies described here.[4]
