INDONESIA THE LARGEST ECONOMY IN SOUTHEAST ASIA - G20 MEMBER
INDONESIA THE LARGEST ECONOMY IN SOUTHEAST ASIA - G20 MEMBER With a population of over 242.3 million, Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world and represents a sizable consumer market. In 2012, Indonesia had a gross domestic product (GDP) of $894.9 billion, making it the 16th largest economy in the world. (International Monetary Fund) The Indonesian government plays a significant role in Indonesia's market economy in which it owns over 160 enterprises and sets prices for several goods such as electricity, rice and fuel. Indonesia has the largest economy in Southeast Asia and is a member of both the G20 and APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation). According to the IMF, Indonesia is the third fastest growing economy in the G20 after India and China. The country's main economic industries include petroleum and natural gas, apparel, textiles, apparel, mining, tourism and rubber. Indonesia has endured the recent global financial crisis through its reliance on domestic consumption to drive continual economic growth. In addition, investment from both foreign and domestic sources has supported the Indonesian economy. Due to its recent economic growth and sound fiscal policies, Indonesia's debt to GDP ratio has steadily declined. Trade was been expanding swiftly between the United States and Indonesia in the last several years. Since 2005, U.S. exports to Indonesia have more than doubled from $3.1 million to $8 million in 2012. The main export categories are transportation equipment, agricultural products, chemicals, and machinery. Indonesia is actively involved with Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). APEC was formed in 1989. It serves as a multilateral forum in which Asian and Pacific economies can solve economic problems and cooperate in developing key economic sectors. Collectively, the 21 economies of APEC, which touch the Pacific Ocean, represent a large consumer market— nearly half the world's population, nearly half of all world trade and more than $31 trillion in economic output. The APEC economies are: Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Republic of the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, United States and Vietnam. Association of SouthEast Asian Nations (ASEAN) On October 7, 2003, 10 Southeast Asian nations signed an agreement to become an economic union by 2020. The agreement sets deadlines for lowering travel restrictions and tariffs in the region of 500 million people. Trade in this ASEAN Economic Community totals more than $720 billion a year. ASEAN includes Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Laos, Vietnam, Brunei and Myanmar. Indonesia will host the 25th Annual APEC meetings in 2013- published: 22 Aug 2013

Indonesia's Ascent: Power, Leadership and Asia's Security Order
Indonesia's Ascent: Power, Leadership and Asia's Security Order
As Indonesia's economy grows, it is increasingly being referred to as a rising middle power and there is mounting speculation that Indonesia might eventually join the ranks of Asia's great powers. Regardless of just how far Indonesia will rise, its government and the will of its people will become increasingly influential in terms of its regional leadership and the values and norms Jakarta espouses. What are the domestic opportunities and constraints that inform Indonesia's rise and how will various domestic contexts affect Indonesia's foreign policy and the values it espouses? Meanwhile, the image of Indonesia as a more stable and democratic nation has contributed to a significant deepening of security ties with some other nations (such as Australia) and these nations may well grasp the opportunity to continue doing so as Indonesia rises. But how might this be perceived amongst our other Southeast Asian neighbours and how might this affect our relations with them? Within Southeast Asia, what will the rise of a more independent and potentially assertive Indonesia mean for the future of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)? Will it serve to strengthen this body as Indonesia adopts what many regard as its natural leadership role or will it threaten ASEAN's continued viability as a more assertive and independent Indonesia opts increasingly to 'go it alone.' And what will Indonesia's rise mean for the Asian balance of power more generally? Will the Indonesian archipelago, for instance, become a theatre for great power competition? Will a rising Indonesia substantially influence the Asian balance by siding with either the US or China? Or might Jakarta seek to maintain an equidistant position between them, thereby acting as a Southeast Asian 'swing state'? In this project, Dr Christopher Roberts (Senior Lecturer, National Security College, ANU), Dr Derry Habir (Bakrie University) and Associate Professor Leonard Sebastian (Head, Indonesian Studies Program, S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies) explore these questions.- published: 22 May 2014

On this trip, I will be heading to Jakarta for close to 3 months. It was a short 1 hour 30 minutes day flight from Singapore Changi Airport to Jakarta's Soekarno Hatta International Airport. The flight attendants showed wonderful service from start to end and I liked the fact that they served each passenger a welcome drink. A lunch service was offered and I really enjoyed the meal. It was an enjoyable flight with Garuda Indonesia despite the shortage of selections on the IFE. The full takeoff and landing video will be uploaded shortly. Australia must capitalise on Indonesia's growing economy
Business leaders from Australia and Indonesia have joined government representatives and academics at a summit in Jakarta this week as one of the first initiatives of the Australia-Indonesia research centre. The centre which brings together universities from both countries was launched by Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Indonesian Vice President Boediono late last year. Among the key aims is to boost trade and industry links in sectors such as food and agriculture, energy and infrastructure. The centre's chairman is Harold Mitchell, one of Australia's top advertising executives and founder of the media-buying agency Mitchell & Partners. He spoke to Indonesia Correspondent Helen Brown in Jakarta.- published: 23 May 2014

Garuda Indonesia Boeing 737-800 Economy Class Review: GA836 Jakarta - Singapore
Join me on this short hop to Singapore on Garuda Indonesia's Boeing 737-800 aircraft. I encountered a delay of 45 minutes before departing from Soekarno Hatta International Airport and despite departing late, we landed at Singapore just ahead of schedule. For dinner, my chicken with rice option was delicious and the portion was just right. Entertainment wise, the selection was decent but it wasn't sensitive enough. All in all, I had a great time onboard GA836 (despite the lack of mood lighting) and I'm really satisfied with the service shown by the cabin crew. The takeoff and landing will be uploaded shortly! My deepest sympathies to the victims and family members of MH370. The wait is agonizing and I hope that investigators will find the wreckage and determine the cause of the crash ASAP.
