Gen Prayuth, 60, was nominated on Thursday in a legislature hand-picked by the junta and made up of mostly military and police figures.

The general was the head of the army when he led a dramatic coup in May.

It followed months of intense political deadlock between Yingluck Shinawatra\'s government and opposition parties that resulted in protests and clashes.

Gen Prayuth was chosen after all 197 members of Thailand\'s National Assembly cast their votes on Thursday morning.

The BBC\'s Jonathan Head in Bangkok says the vote in Parliament was little more than a formality, lasting just 15 minutes, as Gen Prayuth was the only candidate.

http://www.democracynow.org - After a nearly month-long assault that left at least 1,865 Palestinians dead, Israel has pulled its ground forces from the Gaza Strip under the 72-hour ceasefire that went into effect earlier today. Israeli and Palestinian factions have agreed to attend talks in Cairo on a longer-term agreement. Gaza officials say the vast majority of Palestinian victims were civilians in the Israeli offensive that began on July 8. Israel says 64 of its soldiers and three civilians have been killed. Palestinians are returning to homes and neighborhoods that have seen a massive amount of destruction. Nearly a quarter of Gaza\'s 1.8 million resident were displaced during the fighting which destroyed more than 3,000 homes. The ceasefire was reached after international outrage over Palestinian civilian deaths peaked, with even Israel\'s chief backer, the United States, criticizing recent Israeli shellings of United Nations shelters that killed scores of displaced Palestinians. To discuss the lead-up to the ceasefire and what to expect from the talks in Cairo, we are joined by author and scholar Norman Finkelstein.

Hong Kong kung-fu mega star Jackie Chan’s (成龍) only son, 32-year-old Jaycee Chan (房祖名), was arrested last Thursday (August 14) alongside his friend, 23-year-old Taiwanese actor Kai Ko (柯震東), during a drug bust in the elder Chan’s luxury apartment in Beijing. The younger Chan faces up to three to four years in prison.

Rumors of their arrest first surfaced on the internet on August 17, after a Chinese netizen who goes by the handle Xu Hang (徐航) published a post on Chinese microblog Weibo saying, “Kai Ko was arrested over drug use, my dad interrogated him all night yesterday, just wait and see it in the news.” Soon after, netizens were saying that Jaycee Chan had been arrested with Ko. The families and agents of the two movie stars could not reach the pair for several days, until they were contacted by Beijing authorities today.

Beijing authorities confirmed that Chan and Ko had been detained, and said both showed positive results in a urine test for marijuana. The police also released footage of their interrogations as well as of their arrest. The footage also shows a teary Ko apologizing to his fans, saying he was “a bad influence, and teaches young people in society the wrong set of values.”

Ko faces 14 days of detention for marijuana use. Chan faces a possibly much harsher sentence, as the marijuana was found in his house, which makes him guilty of “providing a shelter for others to use drugs,” an offense that could put him behind bars for three to four years.

Gen Prayuth, 60, was nominated on Thursday in a legislature hand-picked by the junta and made up of mostly military and police figures. The general was the head of the army when he led a dramatic coup in May. It followed months of intense political deadlock between Yingluck Shinawatra's government and opposition parties that resulted in protests and clashes. Gen Prayuth was chosen after all 197 members of Thailand's National Assembly cast their votes on Thursday morning. The BBC's Jonathan Head in Bangkok says the vote in Parliament was little more than a formality, lasting just 15 minutes, as Gen Prayuth was the only candidate. Moving on to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. Liberia, the worst-hit country, has enacted a curfew... to minimize movement. ALL movement would be blocked in and out of the West Point slum... where a quarantine center was attacked this past weekend. Here′s Connie Kim with the story. In a bid to stem the Ebola outbreak in Liberia, the nation′s president has declared a night time curfew and ordered security forces to quarantine a slum that′s home to at least fifty thousand people. The new quarantine areas include Monrovia′s West Point slum and all entertainment centers. The new measures come as there was a glimmer of hope in the fight against the outbreak as infected healthcare workers in Liberia are reported to be showing "remarkable signs of improvement" after taking the experimental drug, ZMapp. The three are the first Africans to receive the treatment. ZMapp was first given to two U.S. aid workers and a priest earlier this month. The UN Health agency says it′s only made between 10 to 12 doses of the drug available,... and the most recent shipment went to Liberia. Meanwhile, Liberia has confirmed that all 17 suspected Ebola patients, who fled their quarantine center when it was looted last weekend... have been accounted for. Their sudden disappearance sparked fears the deadly virus could spread into the densely populated slum around it. Officials say the patients turned themselves in and have been transferred to another clinic. It′s not yet known whether any of them actually have Ebola. Latest figures from the WHO show Liberia registered the most new Ebola deaths over a three-day period in the latter half of last week with 53. The overall death toll observed in Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Nigeria... has now topped the 12-hundred mark. Connie Kim, Arirang News.

http://www.democracynow.org - After a nearly month-long assault that left at least 1,865 Palestinians dead, Israel has pulled its ground forces from the Gaza Strip under the 72-hour ceasefire that went into effect earlier today. Nearly a quarter of Gaza's 1.8 million resident were displaced during the fighting which destroyed more than 3,000 homes. The ceasefire was reached after international outrage over Palestinian civilian deaths peaked, with even Israel's chief backer, the United States, criticizing recent Israeli shellings of United Nations shelters that killed scores of displaced Palestinians. The footage also shows a teary Ko apologizing to his fans, saying he was “a bad influence, and teaches young people in society the wrong set of values.” Ko faces 14 days of detention for marijuana use. Chan faces a possibly much harsher sentence, as the marijuana was found in his house, which makes him guilty of “providing a shelter for others to use drugs,” an offense that could put him behind bars for three to four years. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets.
