How Kurdistan Escaped Iraq's Chaos
How Kurdistan Escaped Iraq's Chaos
The Other Iraq (2007): In 2007, it seemed like Kurdistan had escaped the chaos of the Iraq war. As ISIS moves into Northern Iraq, this historic report investigates the optimism of the Kurds just a few years ago. Subscribe to Journeyman for more: http://youtube.com/journeymanpictures For downloads and more information visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=57270 While the rest of Iraq collapses into anarchy, Kurdistan is quietly flourishing. Its marble shopping malls and multi-million dollar construction projects are signs of a new boom. From the moment the helicopter touches down, it's apparent there's something quite different about this corner of Iraq. Marching across the tarmac are businessmen, not soldiers, lured here by a slick marketing campaign. Signs of construction are everywhere. "The Erbil City Scheme will have around 10,000 shops and 2,000 offices", boasts project manager Jack El Boustany, describing the $400 million dollar project. Kurdistan is keen to distance itself from the rest of Iraq. It already behaves like an independent country and recently banned the Iraqi National Flag. Locals make no pretence of hiding their desire for full independence. "Independence is our right", declares President Massoud Barzani. Currently, funding for the Kurdish enclave comes from the national government. Barzani is demanding the incorporation of the oil-rich city of Kirkuk, which would give Kurdistan a chance of economic independence. But Turkey warns this is unacceptable. It has threatened to invade should Kurdistan formally declare independence. "If Turkey gives itself the right to cross our borders, we will no longer respect Turkey's borders", retorts Barzani. Erbil International Airport, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Unravel Travel TV
Erbil International Airport (IATA: EBL, ICAO: ORER), is the main airport of Erbil city in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Erbil International Airport is centrally located on the Silk Road of the Airways. Following the liberation of Iraq in 2003, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) decided to transform Erbil's former military base into a modern civil aviation airport to serve as a major gateway to the world. Erbil International Airport (EIA) officially opened on July 7, 2005, and it welcomed its first IATA carrier on 11th December 2006. The KRG has enacted favorable rules to attract foreign investors and to help citizens of the Kurdistan Region in exile return home. Domestic traffic, as well as regional traffic throughout the expansive Middle East, is growing. Kurdistan's great natural resources of oil, natural gas and other minerals are creating a flourishing and rapidly growing business environment. Kurdistan is previously in exile are returning, bringing with them connections to other lands. There is an ever stronger need for efficient air transport, for passengers as well as cargo. The Erbil area has a stable water supply, and is surrounded by scenic and accessible wilderness lands, with greenery, clean streams, waterfalls and caves. This stands in stark contrast to other Middle Eastern destinations, and visitors will fuel an important tourism industry in Kurdistan. These are some of the reasons that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and EIA have constructed and equipped an airport for the future, with capacity for three million passengers, and one of the world's longest runways, designed to accommodate the Airbus A380 and cargo aircraft of that class. The airport is the culmination of the vision and strategy put in place in 2003. Northern Iraq Kurdistan War (1)
Northern Iraq Kurdistan War (1)
http://www.arabia2day.com This exclusive film was apparently the first film report ever from what was then the world's most forgotten battlefront. It would seem that, by the time the commentary track was dubbed, peace talks were taking place, and there was a brief cessation in the war.] The film was shot by a camera team who entered the Kurdish occupied area of Northern Iraq through Persia (Iran), the only available entry point. This mountainous area is unofficially known as Kurdistan, after the Kurdish tribesmen who've lived there since Biblical times. For the past five years Kurdistan has been pinning down two thirds of the Iraq military in a war of independence. The only outside help they have had is unofficial - from Persia. The report shows a petrol dump near the border which is for the use of vehicles taking supplies to the rebels. Russia used to aid Kurdistan as a way of gaining access to the Middle East oilfields, but the shifting balance of power has meant that Russia has sought other, more powerful influences in the region. There is footage from the team's car driving through the ill-defined border. Persia allows Kurds unrestricted access to the last outpost in Persia before the frontier, Khanem, where they can buy supplies. The government turns a blind eye to this activity, partly to soothe its own Kurdish minority, and partly because its relations with Iraq are strained. Iraqi planes have strafed Persian villages on previous occassions. The camera team is met on the no man's land border by an impromptu 'reception committee' sent by a notified Kurdish commander. The Iraqi regulars have their main garrison at Rawanduz, about 30 miles from the Kurdish stronghold, Galala, which is the first refuelling point. The wreckage of an Iraqi MIG fighter is trawled over here, and there is footage of buildings destroyed here, including a school and a mosque. Galala is the main supply centre for the Kurdish soldiers, or Peshmurgas, as they call themselves. The name means 'those who are prepared to die'. It is the only town where they can buy food, clothes and guns between battles, but ironically they pay in Iraqi dinars. Although the Kurds can claim all the trappings of a spearate state, they use the currency of their sworn enemy. During the fighting Galala and towns like it live by night, when they are free from Iraqi air raids. At night, the army-controlled administration keeps the civil service going, and army courts meet to settle civil disputes. The Kurds are bound by a strict moral code. A bride found to have lost her virginity before marriage can be shot. The history of the Kurds is a fascinating, if tragic one. They have lived in the mountains since 2,000 BC, and claim to be descendents of the Medes of the Old Testament. They've been invaded, conquered and forced to migrate, but they've never allowed themselves to be submitted to outside rule for long. Their objection to being a minority race in Iraq is that their autonomy, language and pride will be lost. If they are to be a part of Iraq, they demand full participation in the government and the army. The Kurds are undisputed masters of the mountains, where the Iraqi tanks can't reach them. They are highly skilled guerilla fighters, able to move unseen amongst the rocks, and command a birds eye view of Iraqi troop movements from lofty vantage points. This also allows them to dominate roads. One example of their success in a 'war of attrition' is Rawanduz. 30,000 Iraqi troops have been pinned down there by a handful of peshmergas with heavy American mortars. Their aim is devastatingly accurate, and they usually implement a hit and run technique. On the ground the Kurds have the advantage of their intimate knoweldge of the territory. So the Iraqis concentrate on surprise air attacks. A frequent target is Hamilton's Bridge at Cho-man, as the report demonstrates. Kurdish Peshmergas Lead Fightback Against ISIS In Iraq
The Kurdish fighters have had enough of ISIS on their land and are determined to drive them out. From the cover of mud trenches the peshmerga fire at ISIS positions 100 metres or so away. This is the ISIS perimeter defence of Jalula town. It is old-style fighting. Man replacing man on the barricade as they run out of ammunition. There is a constant barrage from both sides. CNN EXCLUSIVE: Iraqi Kurdistan Leader Massoud Barzani Says 'The Time Is Here' For Self-determination
Kurdish Pres. Barzani gives CNN's Christiane Amanpour a very strong indication that Kurdistan will seek independence. Would you like to know more? EXCLUSIVE: Iraqi Kurdistan leader Massoud Barzani says 'the time is here' for self-determination (CNN, June 23, 2014) http://cnn.it/1uYWJxH "Iraqi Kurdish President Massoud Barzani gave his strongest-ever indication on Monday that his region would seek formal independence from the rest of Iraq. "Iraq is obviously falling apart," he told CNN's Christiane Amanpour in an exclusive interview. "And it's obvious that the federal or central government has lost control over everything. Everything is collapsing -- the army, the troops, the police." "We did not cause the collapse of Iraq. It is others who did. And we cannot remain hostages for the unknown," he said through an interpreter. "The time is here for the Kurdistan people to determine their future and the decision of the people is what we are going to uphold." Iraqi Kurdish independence has long been a goal, and the region has had autonomy from Baghdad for more than two decades, but they have never before said they would actually pursue that dream. But the latest crisis, in which Sunni extremists have captured a large swath of Iraqi territory on the border of Iraqi Kurdistan, seems to have pushed the Kurds over the edge. "Now we are living [in] a new Iraq, which is different completely from the Iraq that we always knew, the Iraq that we lived in ten days or two weeks ago." "After the recent events in Iraq, it has been proved that the Kurdish people should seize the opportunity now -- the Kurdistan people should now determine their future." Barzani said that he would make that case to U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry when they meet in Erbil Tuesday; America is a close Kurdish ally, but opposes independence for the region..."
