Subscribe Now! ► http://bit.ly/SubClevverMovies Dwayne Johnson continues to tease his involvement with a Shazam movie, but which character will he play? For a few months now, speculation has been running rampant as to which DC Comics character Dwayne Johnson will be portraying – the all powerful super-villain, Black Adam or fun-loving, superhero Shazam? Having bounced back and forth between teasing a potential Black Adam role since last year, and now screwing with us with tweets like “Just say the word,” fans can’t help but wonder, just whom exactly will the former wrestler be playing? If recent comments from The Rock himself are any indication, he doesn’t quite know the answer himself. While on the promo train for Hercules in Mexico, Johnson told the Associated Press that he was having difficulty deciding between playing Shazam or Black Adam. Though which character he will play remains a mystery even to him, Johnson did confirm that he will indeed star in a Shazam movie and that once the writer they’ve hired has secured his contract, the official announcement from Warner Brothers will be made. Johnson went on further to say they have been developing the story for some time and he’s very excited about it and is quote, "putting my heart and soul and my bones into this role." He went on to say that he has adoration for anti-heroes and thinks they are going to do the story great justice and since he’s been a kid his two favorite characters have always been Green Lantern and Black Adam, once again suggesting he’s leaning toward playing Black Adam. We’ll give Johnson one thing; he’s certainly earning the hype and secrecy clause of his WB contract. Now, a lot of folks are saying screw it, he’s The Rock, let him play both parts. We do see your point, but take that idea into a little more consideration – would you really be okay with the same actor playing both the hero and the villain in one single film, regardless of costume changes and the like? I think that would become slightly confusing and borderline infuriating, unless, of course, a legitimate reason can be made in the script for having the same guy playing both roles. On that level, we do know that in the comics the magical wizard Shazam, over the course of several thousand years, grants both young Billy Batson and Teth-Adam the ability to transform into Shazam. If both Billy and Adam use the same superpower, it would only make sense that the incarnations of their superpowers would look similar. Additionally, we know DC wouldn’t be the first to dabble in having an actor play two roles in one film. DC rival Marvel will feature Paul Bettany in duel-wielding roles as the voice of Tony Stark’s AI companion JARVIS and new character Vision in next summer’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. Of course, there’s reason for Bettany playing dual roles ad we’re still not convinced the same thing would work in a Shazam movie. So where does that leave us? Well, Johnson’s stature certainly says he can play both roles, but if our moms taught us anything, it’s that looks aren’t the only thing that matter – Johnson’s goofy personality and generally fun-loving demeanor indicate he would be far more believable as Billy Batson’s alter-ego. Now, don’t get me wrong – I watched WWE back in the day and the Rock can certainly play the villain – he was one of the greatest villains to hit the wrestling world ever, but having since established himself in the film world as the hero who provides comic relief, it will take a lot of convincing to get audiences to believe he’s gone heel. Plus, if he does decide to take on the role of “Black Adam” and play him as an anti-hero, than we’re basically going to be given a Shazam movie where the main hero has suddenly been relegated to side-kick. That would be like a Batman movie starring Brad Pitt as Robin. Does anyone really want that? Personally, I’d rather see Dwayne take on the superhero version of Big and continue on in that iteration for as many films as possible. Plus, what kid wouldn’t fanaticize about becoming superhero Rock? But that’s just one opinion - what do you think?
