After the Islamic State overran parts of northern Iraq, tens of thousands of Yazidis were forced into the Sinjar mountain range, where Islamic State militants — who consider the Yazidi devil worshippers — surrounded them. President Obama claimed on August 14 that the US military intervention in Iraq broke the siege of the trapped Yazidi civilians in the Sinjar mountains. But the Yazidi themselves disagree. Instead, they are adamant that they owe their rescue from the surrounding Islamic State militants to the Syrian Kurdish fighters of the People's Protection Units (YPG). The YPG has been fighting the Islamic State longer and harder than any other group in Syria, and pushed a narrow escape route deep through Islamic State territory to rescue the Yazidis. VICE News travelled through the desert corridor to ascertain the true story of the Yazidis’ last minute escape from the Islamic State. Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News The Islamic State, a hardline Sunni jihadist group that formerly had ties to al Qaeda, has conquered large swathes of Iraq and Syria. Previously known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the group has announced their intention to reestablish the caliphate and declared their leader, the shadowy Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as the caliph. Flush with cash and US weapons seized during recent advances in Iraq, the Islamic State’s expansion shows no sign of slowing down. In the first week of August alone, Islamic State fighters have taken over new areas in northern Iraq, encroaching on Kurdish territory and sending Christians and other minorities fleeing as reports of massacres emerged. Elsewhere in territory it has held for some time, the Islamic State has gone about consolidating power and setting up a government dictated by Sharia law. While the world may not recognize the Islamic State, in the Syrian city of Raqqa, the group is already in the process of building a functioning regime. VICE News reporter Medyan Dairieh spent three weeks embedded with the Islamic State, gaining unprecedented access to the group in Iraq and Syria as the first and only journalist to document its inner workings. In part one, Dairieh heads to the frontline in Raqqa, where Islamic State fighters are laying siege to the Syrian Army’s division 17 base. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, (ISIL), is a jihadist group active in Iraq and Syria seeking to establish a Islamic caliphate. With thousands of Arab and foreign fighters under its wing, it has emerged as one of the most powerful groups in the region. An off-shoot of al-Qaeda, the group has attacked rivals and killed hundreds for violating its strict interpretation of Islam. Despite the Iraqi army's efforts to dislodge the fighters, the group controls parts of two Iraqi cities in Anbar province, most of Mosul and several neighborhoods in Kirkuk province. ISIL also controls parts of northern Syria, including their stronghold the city of Raqqa, and are fighting rivals Al Nusra, for oil-rich city of Deir az Zor. Bulldozing the Border Between Iraq and Syria: The Islamic State (Part 5)
Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News On August 8, nearly three years after the United States pulled out of Iraq, President Barack Obama ordered airstrikes to commence on Islamic State positions in northern Iraq, as the group’s fighters advanced towards the Kurdish capital of Erbil. For six weeks prior to the strikes the Islamic State made stunning gains within Iraq, effectively dismantling the border with Syria and defeating the Iraqi army with little in the way to stop them. In the final installment of VICE News’ unprecedented look inside the Islamic State, reporter Medyan Dairieh journeys 200 miles from the the group’s power base in the Syrian city of Raqqa to the border with Iraq. There, after defeating the Iraqi army manning the checkpoint, Islamic State fighters work further to bulldoze the border. As they clear apart a barrier that divided Iraq and Syria, Islamic State fighters declare an end of the Sykes-Picot Agreement, a nearly 100-year-old pact between France and Britain that divided up the Middle East. For now, that area between Iraq and Syria is part of a new territory: the Islamic State. Islamic State of Iraq and Syria Full Documentary :: Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi Biography The Islamic State[1][2] (Arabic: الدولة الإسلامية al-Dawlah al-Islāmīyah), formerly known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (alternatively translated as Islamic State of Iraq and Syria and Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham) (Arabic: الدولة الاسلامية في العراق والشام al-Dawlah al-Islāmīyah fī al-ʻIrāq wa-al-Shām), abbreviated ISIL, ISIS, or from its Arabic acronym as DĀʻiSh or DAISH (Arabic: داعش Dāʻish), is an unrecognized state and active jihadist militant group in Iraq and Syria. In its self-proclaimed status as a sovereign state, it claims the territory of Iraq and Syria, with implied future claims over more of the Levant region, including Jordan, Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, a part of southern Turkey—including Hatay, part of the former Aleppo Vilayet of Ottoman Syria—and Cyprus.[36][37] The group in its original form was composed of and supported by a variety of insurgent groups, including its predecessor organizations, the Mujahideen Shura Council, the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI) and Al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI), the insurgent groups Jaysh al-Fatiheen, Jund al-Sahaba, Katbiyan Ansar Al-Tawhid wal Sunnah and Jeish al-Taiifa al-Mansoura, and a number of Iraqi tribes that profess Sunni Islam. ISIS has witnessed significant growth as an organization owing to its participation in the Syrian Civil War and the strength of its supreme leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. The economic and political discrimination mounted against Iraqi Sunnis since the fall of Saddam Hussain has also helped it to gain support. At the height of the Iraq War, its forerunners enjoyed a significant presence in the Iraqi governorates of Al Anbar, Ninawa, Kirkuk, most of Salah ad Din, parts of Babil, Diyala and Baghdad, and claimed Baqubah as a capital city.[38][39][40][41] In the ongoing Syrian Civil War, ISIS has a large presence in the Syrian governorates of Ar-Raqqa, Idlib and Aleppo.[42][43] ISIS is known for its harsh interpretation of Islam[44] and brutal violence,[45] which is directed particularly against Shia Muslims. It has at least 4,000 fighters in its ranks[46] who, in addition to attacks on government and military targets, have claimed responsibility for attacks that have killed thousands of civilians.[47] ISIS had close links with al-Qaeda until 2014, but in February of that year, after an eight-month power struggle, al-Qaeda cut all ties with the group, reportedly for its "notorious intractability" and wanton brutality.[48][49][49] ISIS's original aim was to establish a caliphate in the Sunni-majority regions of Iraq. Following its involvement in the Syrian Civil War this expanded to include controlling Sunni-majority areas of Syria (see spillover from the Syrian War).[50] A caliphate was eventually proclaimed in June 2014, with Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi being named as its caliph, and the group was renamed the Islamic State.[1] Contents 1 Name and name changes 2 Territorial claims 3 Analysis 4 Finances 5 Equipment 6 History 6.1 As Jama'at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad 6.1.1 Origins 6.1.2 Goals and tactics 6.1.3 Activities 6.2 As Tanzim Qaidat al-Jihad fi Bilad al-Rafidayn 6.2.1 Goals and umbrella organizations 6.3 As Islamic State of Iraq 6.3.1 Strength and activity 6.3.2 Rise and decline of Al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) 6.3.3 Resisting established sectarian violence 6.3.4 Operations outside Iraq and other activities 6.3.5 Conflicts with other groups 6.3.6 Transformation and attempted resurgency 6.4 As Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant 6.4.1 Declaration and dispute with Al-Nusra Front 6.4.2 Conflicts with other groups 6.5 As Islamic State 7 Timeline of events 7.1 2003--2006 events 7.2 2007 events 7.3 2009--2012 events 7.3.1 Egyptian revolution of 2011 7.4 2013 events 7.5 2014 events 8 Notable members 9 See also 10 Notes 11 References 12 Bibliography 13 External links Name and name changes The group has used several different names since its formation in early 2004 as Jamāʻat al-Tawḥīd wa-al-Jihād, "The Organization of Monotheism and Jihad" (JTJ).- published: 30 Jun 2014

Islamic State in Iraq Execute Syrian Truck Drivers الدولة الإسلامية في العراق تقوم بعدم ثلاث سائقين
The "Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL), which is the resulting entity from the merger of al-Qaeda in Iraq and Syria, is seen in this video intercepting three trucks in Iraq heading to Syria. The three truck drivers, one of whom is from Tartous, are then questioned whether they're Sunnis or Shiites (Shias). Then the hardline Wahhabi jihadist proceeds to ask them about the number of kneelings a Muslim is supposed to perform at dawn, noon, and evening prayers. After they apparently failed in answering correctly, they are taken and shot execution-style by the jihadists who, as usual, scream "Allahu Akbar!" with jubilation. The video ends with a statement threatening the "Armies of the Cross in Dabiq" to be burnt by the fire whose spark was ignited in Iraq. Dabiq is a town near Aleppo where the battle of Marj Dabiq took place on August 24, 1516, and it ended up in a decisive victory of the Ottoman Empire over the Mamluk Sultanate.
