Obeidi, a lawyer, has reportedly told CNN that she had entered Tunisia with the help of defecting military officer, with a refugee document and was currently considering her next move. She claimed her court case against the soldiers - who she said had seized her at a checkpoint near Tripoli -- had barely progressed. According to reports, after passing numerous checkpoints disguised in a veil that hid her face except one eye, Obeidi passed the Dehebi crossing on Thursday without trouble. Members of the revolutionary council in Benghazi have seized upon the woman's ordeal. She was dragged away from reporters at the Rixos hotel on March 26 after she started angrily detailing her alleged attack. Government officials promptly labelled Obeidi a prostitute and suggested she may have been a provocateur sent by rebels from eastern Libya, from where part of her family reportedly hails. Eman al-Obeidi made a weary escape last Thursday, aided by a defecting military officer and his family. Hidden beneath local clothing which disguised her appearance, leaving only one eye revealed, she left the country by military car. The vehicle was stopped at several checkpoints en route to the border crossing of Dahibah, but al-Obeidi said that the military officer was waved through when he showed his permit. According to CNN "European diplomats drove her from the border region to Tunis and are giving her sanctuary, there while she considers her future." The BBC says al-Obeidi is now staying at the French embassy in Tunis. She hopes that she will be able to obtain protection from a Western government. She said "I still do not know what I am going to do. Of course I'd like to see my family." According to previous reports al-Obeidi had been under surveillance after her escape from her captors and subject to continued violence. She faces charges of defamation of character against the Gaddafi forces she alleged kidnapped and raped her. She gave an account of her ordeal by telephone last month to CNN. Her escape suggests that security was not heavily focused on her. Other women have also made rape claims against Gaddafi's forces, but none as dramatic as al-Obeidi's claims in front of Western journalists. Some sources believe the event in the Rixos hotel was staged as propaganda to demonize the Gaddafi regime in the eyes of the West. Libyan state television abused her as Hala Musrati, the female TV presenter, launched a vicious televised attack on the character of al-Obeidi, publicly concluding that "al-Obeidi was a liar and a traitor to her country, and that she was worse than a prostitute, because even a prostitute could have national pride" as Muslim Media Watch reported. This is unlikely to be the end of the story of Eman al-Obeidi, whom journalists will want to question further.
