Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald TD has today called on the Irish Government to use its full Diplomatic strength to force the Government of Israel to comply with international law and end the collective punishment against the people of Gaza. Deputy McDonald, speaking during Leaders Questions today with the Tánaiste, noted the urgency of the ongoing and spiralling crisis in Gaza. Deputy McDonald said: "In the last two days the Israeli Defence Forces have killed 50 people and wounded more than 500 in relentless shelling of Gaza. "Their claim that they are attacking Palestinian military targets is a lie. "They are attacking family homes. "They are attacking refugee camps. "They are killing women and children. "And as if this brutality is not enough they are now threatening a full scale military invasion of Gaza. "For years the people of Gaza have been subjected to an illegal and brutal blockade. "They are now being subjected to collective punishment by the Israeli government. "They are targeting women and children. "This is not acceptable. "It is not acceptable to kidnap and kill Israeli teenagers. "It is not acceptable to kidnap and kill Palestinian children. "And it is not acceptable for the Israeli government to pound Gaza --one of the most densely populated places in the world- with hundreds of tons of explosives in a matter of days. "The firing of rockets from Gaza into Israel should end. "But these actions cannot excuse the application of overwhelming military force by the Israeli government against a civilian population. "Given the seriousness of the situation and the very real possibility that Israeli aggression against the Palestinian civilian population will escalate, it is time for your Government to take a more hands on approach. "In March 2013 the EU Heads of Mission in Jerusalem published a report accusing the Israeli government's flouting of international law. "The report found that the Israeli settlements in East Jerusalem and the west bank are 'the biggest single threat to the two state solution.' "The EU report accused the Israeli government of implementing a settlement policy that is 'systematic, deliberate and provocative.'" "Diplomatic pressure must be brought to bear to bring this violence to an end and to open the way for talks."

"Israel claims that the ongoing blockade of Gaza, in force since June 2007, is a response to the indiscriminate rocket attacks launched from Gaza into southern Israel by Palestinian armed groups. The reality is that the blockade does not target armed groups but rather punishes Gaza's entire population by restricting the entry of food, medical supplies, educational equipment and building materials," said Malcolm Smart, Middle East and North Africa Director, Amnesty International. "The blockade constitutes collective punishment under international law and must be lifted immediately." As the occupying power, Israel has a duty under international law to ensure the welfare of Gaza's inhabitants, including their rights to health, education, food and adequate housing During Operation "Cast Lead", from 27 December 2008 to 18 January 2009, 13 Israelis were killed, including three civilians in southern Israel, where dozens more were injured in indiscriminate rocket attacks by Palestinian armed groups. In Gaza, Israeli attacks damaged or destroyed civilian buildings and infrastructure, including hospitals and schools, the water and electricity systems. Thousands of Palestinian homes were destroyed or severely damaged. An estimated 280 of the 641 schools in Gaza were damaged and 18 were destroyed. More than half of Gaza's population is under the age of 18 and the disruption to their education, due to the damage caused during Operation "Cast Lead" and as a result of the continuing Israeli boycott, is having a devastating impact. Hospitals have also been badly affected by the military offensive and the blockade. Trucks of medical aid provided by the World Health Organization have been repeatedly refused entry to Gaza without explanation by Israeli officials.

The only solution to the problems faced by 1.5 million people living in the Gaza Strip is to lift its closure, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has claimed. According to the charity, the situation cannot be remedied by providing humanitarian aid alone due to restrictions imposed by Israel. The four-year closure has led to increased unemployment and poverty, while healthcare provision has dropped due to a lack of medicine and equipment. Israel's "collective punishment" of Gaza and those living there constitutes a violation of international humanitarian law, the ICRC reports. "We are urging Israel to put an end to this closure and call upon all those who have an influence on the situation, including Hamas, to do their utmost to help Gaza's civilian population," said Beatrice Megevand-Roggo, ICRC Head of Operations for the Middle East. She added that Palestinians have the right "to live normal, dignified lives". While 8,000 types of goods could be brought into Gaza before the closure, only 80 are now permitted. The ICRC is currently backing the upgrade of the Rafah wastewater treatment plant in Gaza, which could serve 170,000 people once completed.

As the Israeli blockade has been imposed on Gaza for over seven years, and the Egyptian closure has been imposed since last July, life of many Gazans have only got worse since many of their basic needs are no more available. The closure of the crossings along the borders with Egypt has affected the disabled people, for their medications are not available in Gaza or they need to be transferred outside Gaza for medical treatment. Even when the Rafah crossing is opened for few hours for patients, not all patients can travel and many turn back home with no avail and are forced to sometimes delay undergoing their surgeries abroad. Number of Gazans became disabled after the last 2 Israeli aggressions in the past three years. They do not only suffer the consequences of an aggression and an Israeli blockade, but also have to deal with the daily-life difficulties the Egyptian closure has added to their lives. By imposing an illegal blockade on Gaza, Israel is continuing to prevent reasonable medical treatment for the disabled. The blockade constitutes a form of collective punishment against a civilian population living under occupation, in contravention of Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention. Disabled people in Gaza call on the international community and humanitarian organizations to help put an end to the Israeli blockade and the Egyptian closure.
