i/ˈmeɪn/; French: État du Maine) is a state in New England, in the United States. Maine is the 39th most extensive and the 42nd most populous of the 50 U.S. states. It is bordered by New Hampshire to the west, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Quebec to the east and north, respectively. Maine is the northernmost state in the contiguous United States east of the Great Lakes. It is known for its jagged, rocky coastline; low, rolling mountains; heavily forested interior, and picturesque waterways; and also its seafood cuisine, especially lobster and clams. For thousands of years, indigenous peoples were the only inhabitants of the territory that is now Maine. At the time of European encounter, several Algonquian-speaking peoples inhabited the area. The first European settlement in Maine was by the French in 1604 on Saint Croix Island, by Pierre Dugua, Sieur de Mons. The first English settlement in Maine, the short-lived Popham Colony, was established by the Plymouth Company in 1607. A number of English settlements were established along the coast of Maine in the 1620s, although the rugged climate, deprivations, and conflict with the local peoples caused many to fail over the years.

History
This was territory of the Abenaki tribe whose fortified village was located up the Sokokis Trail at Pequawket (now Fryeburg). The township was granted in 1630 by the Plymouth Company to Thomas Lewis and Richard Bonython, and extended 4 miles (6.4 km) along the sea, by 8 miles (13 km) inland. Settled in 1631 as part of Winter Harbor (as Biddeford Pool was first known), it then included Biddeford. It would be reorganized in 1653 by the Massachusetts General Court as Saco.

Old Orchard Beach, Maine
Old Orchard Beach is a town and census-designated place (CDP) in York County, Maine, United States. The population was 8,624 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland−South Portland−Biddeford, Maine Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Located on the inner side of Saco Bay on the Atlantic Ocean, the town is a popular summer beach destination. The downtown contains many tourist-oriented businesses, including clam shacks and T-shirt shops. A wooden pier on the beach contains many other tourist businesses, including a variety of souvenir shops. The seven mile (11 km) long beach stretching away from the downtown is lined with many beach residential properties, condominiums, motels and bed and breakfasts.
Early history
The Old Orchard Beach area began appearing in historical records around 1653. The area was first officially settled in 1657 by Thomas Rogers who had arrived in the Goose Fare Brook area in 1636, and who dubbed it "The Garden By The Sea". The town takes its name from Rogers' abandoned apple orchard. Rogers' family left the area and relocated in Kittery, Maine after an Indian attack destroyed the Rogers' homestead. The namesake orchard survived for approximately 150 years as a beacon of land to sailors in the Atlantic Ocean. The historic Free Will Baptist revival camp at Ocean Park, Maine, just down the beach from central Old Orchard, was built in 1881 by Bates College President Oren B. Cheney. The mission of the Association, as declared to the State of Maine on January 24, 1881 was "to establish a place of summer resort for holding religious, educational and other meetings at Old Orchard, in Saco, Maine, in the County of York.". The community still thrives today.

Thunder Hole is a further attraction. Onlookers seem almost awe struck when witnessing the relentless might of the Atlantic and the unexpected sound of thunder that emanates from a small cave within the granite cliffs caused by the sea as it floods into the air-filled cave thus releasing the air pressure from within with fantastic, thunderous effect. Loop Road is a scenic route that travels from coast to countryside and passes a picturesque and charming semi-timbered house, the Jordan Pond Gate House, built by John D. Rockefeller in1932. Created from a glacier, Jordan Pond is relatively deep and at its northern end there are two round hills, the ‘Bubbles’ from the summit of which the vast landscape of the glowing forest below is even more impressive. Cadillac Mountain is the highest point on the North Atlantic coast. The scant vegetation of this area is quite surprising especially as it is in such close proximity to the nearby forests. During September, when the first so-called ‘leaf reports’ are announced in the newspapers and on television, there’s an air of excitement. The beginning of the Indian Summer is the time of the ‘Leaf Peepers.’ Whether they travel to the park by car, foot, horse and carriage or by way of a rented mountain bike, visitors to Acadia’s beautiful forests have a wide selection of leaves from which to choose. During fall, the red and orange of the maple trees and the golden yellow hues of aspen and birch melt together in a breathtaking carpet of colour that seems to cover the entire country. Acadia is a veritable arcadia!

Eastern Trail Scarborough to Saco Maine
The Eastern Trail is a 65-mile section of the East Coast Greenway, a transportation-recreation greenway connecting Kittery, in southernmost Maine, to Casco Bay in South Portland! The Eastern Trail is both a trail and a vision. The Eastern Trail has 22 off-road miles from Bug Light (in South Portland) to Kennebunk, as well as a scenic on-road route that mostly follows quiet country roads. This is part 1 of a 2-part video log of my canoe and camping trip on the Saco River. This trip started at Canal Bridge in Fryeburg and ended at Brownfield Bridge in Brownfield, Maine. It was a total of 16 miles. This was more of a preparatory trip, as I hadn't been camping in awhile, and I needed to get myself back up to speed. This is part 1 of a 2-part video log of my canoe and camping trip on the Saco River. This trip started at Canal Bridge in Fryeburg and ended at Brownfield Bridge in Brownfield, Maine. It was a total of 16 miles. This was more of a preparatory trip, as I hadn't been camping in awhile, and I needed to get myself back up to speed. I learned a lot on this trip, both about my gear, and myself. When I come back to the Saco at some point next year (and I WILL be back!) I will most likely attempt the full trip from Saco Bound headquarters in Fryeburg all the way to Hiram, a total of 43 miles.
The first day was an 8-mile canoe ride to my camp site. Below Walkers Bridge, the camping is mostly free. The land on both sides is private land, and most landowners are kind enough to allow people to camp on their property free of charge. Unfortunately, some people abuse that privilege, and leave trash strewn everywhere. Because of that, some landowners have posted no trespassing signs and refuse to allow people to camp there. (I follow a policy of Carry In-Carry-Out, and I strongly encourage you to do the same!)
Once arriving at the campsite and setting up for the stay, a lot of gear was put to the test, starting with a pair of cheap Chinese-produced backpacking canister style stoves. Both performed admirably for the entire trip. Separate reviews for each will be forthcoming. Once dinner was out of the way, it was time for some knife testing. The SOG Jungle Canopy performed even better than expected. The MTech Moray was a bit better than I initially hoped for, but still performed about as well as one can expect for a $15 "fighting" knife. The real surprise of the trip was the Johnson Adventure Blades Ka-Bar Piggyback. What a great little knife!
Tuesday dawned with drizzle on and off for most of the day. There were some brief interludes where it was possible to do some fishing, but most of the day was spent inside the tent waiting for the weather to break. It was not to be quite yet. Late in the night, the skies opened, and there came an unbelievable deluge of rain. Around 6am, the rain slackened enough to pull the canoe farther up on shore before it floated away. The heavy rain continued until mid-morning on Wednesday, when I was finally able to emerge from the tent and perform some camp chores and dry out some gear. The remainder of the day continued with more gear testing, and most of the later afternoon into the evening was spent near the fire attempting to dry things out and use up the firewood purchased before the trip. (Standing deadwood was either picked clean or soggy and rotten, not much firewood to be had.)
Thursday morning, I awoke to find half of my tent in the Saco River. The water had continued to rise from the previously received rain, and I figured it was a good time to pull up stakes and head for the landing, despite being a few hours earlier than expected. After breakfast and packing all the gear, all that remained was the 8 mile canoe ride down the beautiful Saco to Brownfield Bridge. The scenery on the river can be truly awe-inspiring, but water hazards abound, requiring deft handling of the canoe. The Saco is a very technical river, and beginners should proceed with extreme caution. Walkers Rip was also an interesting ride. I struck one rock, shuddering my little watercraft from stem to stern, and causing me some concern until I thoroughly inspected it and found no leaks. Upon reaching the landing 3 hours early, a final lunch was prepared using a home made steamer. All in all, it was a very productive trip, and even more enjoyable than initially anticipated. I can't stress this enough: if you don't take the time to get out there, one day it will be all gone and you'll wake up and wonder where the time went. Take the time, unplug from the digital world and go out and experience the real one. It's out there waiting for you.
