Saving Albatrosses - How to Reduce Seabird Bycatch - Tuna Longline Fisheries - English
This instructional video by the BirdLife International Marine Programme explains how to prevent the death of seabirds behind fishing boats, particularly in longline tuna fisheries on the high seas, and in doing so save albatrosses from extinction.
Learn how simple, inexpensive and effective measures can prevent needless deaths of seabirds, and perhaps even increase your fishing yield.
While this is mainly aimed at fishermen, it is full off great albatross footage and neatly illustrates how to solve the problem of seabird bycatch in longliners – so please help us share it around, especially to Regional Fisheries Management Organisations and Governmental Fishing Agencies.

Western Siem Pang of Stung Treng province is in the North-Eastern plains of Cambodia. This site supports a number of the rare and critically endangered wildlife species of South-East Asia. At well over 700,000 hectares this landscape is one of largest protected rugged landscapes in the region.
Two critically endangered ibis species are also present at this site. The world's largest remaining White shouldered Ibis population is found here and also the Giant Ibis, the national bird symbol of Cambodia.
Both local communities and wildlife are heavily dependent of these forests to support their existence.

Just north of Adelaide, on the east coast of Gulf St Vincent, lies one of South Australia’s most important areas for migratory and resident shorebirds. Dubbed the “Samphire Coast” for its vast network of natural samphire* saltmarshes, the area supports nationally and internationally significant numbers of migratory and resident shorebirds and has been recently gazetted by the state as the Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary.
52 shorebird species, including 37 migratory species, have been recorded in the Samphire Coast where they benefit from a unique mix of natural and artificial habitats including: Extensive tidal mudflats, saltmarshes, tidal creeks and estuaries, stormwater detention wetlands, effluent water treatment ponds and commercial saltfields.

Thank you Birdfair for 25 years of growing conservation. Premiered at the opening ceremony of the 2013 British Birdwatching Fair.
From a field in Rutland, UK, Birdfair money has into exponential support for BirdLife's conservation projects all over the world.
Birdfair has provided over £3 million of seed money that has reaped over £30 million of subsequent international conservation investment and action.
This video gives three examples and thank you messages from BirdLife Partners across the globe.
Harapan, Indonesia - Forest of Hope: Birdfair 2002 raised £147,000 to kickstart the BirdLife intervention on Sumatra, just before all lowland rainforest was lost.
Albatross Task Force: Birdfair 2000 raised £122,000 which launched the BirdLife Global Seabird Programme.
Local Empowerment in the Sahel: £227,000 from Birdfair 2011 Living on the Edge grew into coordinated cross-border conservation through the BirdLife Partnership's Flyways Programme.
Steve Micklewright, Executive Director, BirdLife Malta thanks Birdfair for its support for stopping illegal hunting on the Maltese islands (Stop the Massacre 1989).
Vony Raminoarisoa, Coordinateur National, Asity Madagascar thanks Birdfair for its support for conserving fragile wetlands in Madagascar and helping form the national organisation (Saving Madagascar's fragile wetlands 2003).

BirdLife International
BirdLife International is a global partnership of conservation organisations that strives to conserve birds, their habitats and global biodiversity, working with people towards sustainability in the use of natural resources. It is the world's largest partnership of conservation organisations, with over 120 partner organisations. The partnership forms the leading authority on the status of birds, their habitats and the issues and problems affecting bird life.
History
BirdLife International was founded in 1922 as the "International Committee for Bird Protection" by American ornithologists T. Gilbert Pearson and Jean Theodore Delacour. This lobbying group changed its name in 1993 to "BirdLife International".
Regional work
BirdLife International has conservation work programmes in the following parts of the world, which it describes as "regions" - Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and Central Asia, the Middle East and the Pacific.
Global programmes
Within each of these regions, BirdLife has nine programmes - some are well established, others are more recent and responding to specific conservation issues. In addition to the regional programmes, there are "global" programmes, not specific to a region. Together these programmes help the partnership to focus and work on common priorities. They provide the framework for planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating conservation work. BirdLife programmes are; the Seabird and Marine Programme, the Birdlife Preventing Extinctions Programme, the Migratory Birds and Flyways Programme, the Climate Change Programme, the Forests of Hope Programme, the Local Empowerment Programme, the Invasive Alien Species Programme and the Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas Programme.

Learn how simple, inexpensive and effective measures can prevent needless deaths of seabirds, and perhaps even increase your fishing yield.
While this is mainly aimed at fishermen, it is full off great albatross footage and neatly illustrates how to solve the problem of seabird bycatch in longliners – so please help us share it around, especially to Regional Fisheries Management Organisations and Governmental Fishing Agencies.

Western Siem Pang of Stung Treng province is in the North-Eastern plains of Cambodia. This site supports a number of the rare and critically endangered wildlife species of South-East Asia. At well over 700,000 hectares this landscape is one of largest protected rugged landscapes in the region.
Two critically endangered ibis species are also present at this site. The world's largest remaining White shouldered Ibis population is found here and also the Giant Ibis, the national bird symbol of Cambodia.
Both local communities and wildlife are heavily dependent of these forests to support their existence.

Dubbed the “Samphire Coast” for its vast network of natural samphire* saltmarshes, the area supports nationally and internationally significant numbers of migratory and resident shorebirds and has been recently gazetted by the state as the Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary.
52 shorebird species, including 37 migratory species, have been recorded in the Samphire Coast where they benefit from a unique mix of natural and artificial habitats including: Extensive tidal mudflats, saltmarshes, tidal creeks and estuaries, stormwater detention wetlands, effluent water treatment ponds and commercial saltfields.
