Feldhamer et al. and Geist included "Dama mesopotamica" as a subspecies of "Dama dama", though it was regarded as a separate species by Haltenorth , Ferguson et al. , Uerpmann , and Harrison and Bates . We follow Pitra et al. and Randi et al. in treating "D. mesopotamica" as a separate species, based on a major study on the evolution and phylogeny of old world deer. Thus, the majority of the scientists consider it as "Dama mesopotamica". Moreover, Khuzestan Province, where they found the 25 deer, is historically a part of ancient Mesopotamia.
Persian fallow deer are physically larger than fallow deer, their antlers bigger and less palmated. They are nearly extinct today, inhabiting only a small habitat in Khuzestan, southern Iran, two rather small protected areas in Mazandaran , an area of northern Israel and an island in Lake Urmia in north-western Iran and in some parts of Iraq. They were formerly found from Mesopotamia and Egypt to the Cyrenaica and Cyprus. Their preferred habitat is open woodland. They are bred in zoos and parks in Iran, Israel, and Germany today. In 1978 as the Iranian Revolution was unfolding, with the help of Prince Gholam Reza Pahlavi and the chief of the games and wild life of Iran, the Israeli conservationists carried a all the captive fallow deer out of Iran and into Israel for safe keep. Since 1996 they have been gradually and successfully reintroduced from a breeding center in the Carmel, into the wild in northern Israel, and more than 650 of them now live in the Galilee, Mount Carmel areas and the Brook of Sorek. Due to the rarity of this species, little information exists on their behavior and social structure in the wild; therefore, most biological information comes from captive-bred or reintroduced deer, which may not present an accurate representation of the natural population.

The male fallow deer is known as a buck, the female is a doe, and the young a fawn. Adult bucks are 140–160 cm (55–63 in) long with a 85–95 cm (33–37 in) shoulder height, and typically 60–100 kg (130–220 lb) in weight; does are 130–150 cm (51–59 in) long with a 75–85 cm (30–33 in) shoulder height, and 30–50 kg (66–110 lb) in weight. The largest bucks may measure 190 cm (75 in) long and weigh 150 kg (330 lb).[5] Fawns are born in spring at about 30 cm (12 in) and weigh around 4.5 kg (9.9 lb). The life span is around 12–16 years. There is much variation in the coat colour of the species, with four main variants: "common", "menil", melanistic and leucistic – a genuine colour variety, not albinistic. The white is the lightest coloured, almost white; common and menil are darker, and melanistic is very dark, sometimes even black (easily confused with the sika deer).

The "fallow deer" is a ruminant mammal belonging to the family Cervidae. This common species is native to western Eurasia, but has been introduced to South Africa, Fernando Pó, São Tomé, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mayotte, Réunion, Seychelles, Comoro Islands, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Cape Verde, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, United States, the Falkland Islands and Peru. It often includes the rarer Persian fallow deer as a subspecies , while others treat it as an entirely different species .
The male fallow deer is known as a "buck", the female is a "doe", and the young a "fawn". Adult bucks are 140 – long with a 85 – shoulder height, and typically 60 – in weight; does are 130 – long with a 75 – shoulder height, and 30 – in weight. The largest bucks may measure 190 cm long and weigh 150 kg. Fawns are born in spring at about 30 cm and weigh around 4.5 kg. The life span is around 12–16 years.
There is much variation in the coat colour of the species, with four main variants: "common", "menil", melanistic and leucistic – a genuine colour variety, not albinistic. The white is the lightest coloured, almost white; common and menil are darker, and melanistic is very dark, sometimes even black .
Most herds consist of the common coat variation, yet it is not rare to see animals of the menil coat variation. The Melanistic variation is generally rarer and white very much rarer still, although wild New Zealand herds often have a high melanistic percentage.
Only bucks have antlers, which are broad and shovel-shaped from three years. In the first two years the antler is a single spike. They are grazing animals; their preferred habitat is mixed woodland and open grassland. During the rut bucks will spread out and females move between them, at this time of year fallow deer are relatively ungrouped compared to the rest of the year when they try to stay together in groups of up to 150.

Not sure of coming back when they leave their home. They continue to protect the environment and what lives in it.
Iranian game wardens sometimes get badly wounded or lose their life so that Iran's wildlife lives on. Some of the most famous species in Iran are the last surviving critically endangered Asiatic cheetah also known as Iran's cheetah, Caspian Seal, Persian fallow deer, and some other species.
