It ended with the 43-year-old man shot dead amid the theater seats, and a 71-year-old retired police officer in custody. The shooting Monday during a 1:20 p.m. showing of Lone Survivor at a Wesley Chapel, Florida, movie theater escalated from an objection to cell phone use, to a series of arguments, to the sudden and deadly shooting, according to police and witnesses. As a male moviegoer texted, the man seated behind him objected, and asked the texter to put his phone away. They argued several times, according to police and witnesses, and the man who was texting watched as the other man walked out of the theater. Curtis Reeves, a retired police officer, apparently went seeking a theater employee to complain about the texting, police said. Two seats away Charles Cummings and his son watched the squabbling. When Reeves returned, he was without a manager. He came back very irritated, Cummings said. The man who had been texting, Chad Oulson, got up and turned to Reeves to ask him if he had gone to tell on him for his texting. Oulson reportedly said, in effect: I was just sending a message to my young daughter. Voices were raised. Popcorn was thrown. And then came something unimaginable -- except maybe in a movie. A gun shot. Oulson was fatally wounded. His wife was hit, too, through the hand as she raised her hand in front of her husband as the shooter drew a handgun. Oulson staggered toward the Cummings and fell on them, Charles Cummings said. The shooter sat down and put the gun in his lap. It happened that an off-duty deputy sheriff from Sumter County was among the 25 people theater at the Grove 16 complex. He rushed to the scene to make sure no more shots were fired and the shooter would stay put. It also happened that there were two nurses there and one came to Oulson's side and performed CPR until paramedics arrived. Oulson later died. His wife, Nicole, suffered a non-life threatening wound to her hand. I can't believe people would bring a pistol to a movie, said Cummings, a Vietnam veteran who had celebrated his birthday by going to a movie with his son. Reeves was sitting with his wife, Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said. CNN affiliate Bay News 9 reported that Reeves was arrested on a charge of second-degree homicide. It could not be determined Monday night whether he had retained an attorney. Reeves retired in 1993 as a captain with the police department in nearby Tampa. He was also director of security at Busch Gardens until 2005, the station reported. Bay News 9 spoke to a neighbor of Oulson's who said the dead man was a very nice guy who he couldn't envision being involved in an incident like this. Always smiling. I've never seen him angry, Bill Costas said. If I needed help with something he was always there. Totally different guy. Like I said, it just doesn't make sense to me. Not from what I know of him. The shooting happened at about 1:30 p.m. inside one of the theaters at the Grove 16 complex, sheriff's spokeswoman Melanie Snow said. This was an isolated altercation between two guests that escalated unexpectedly. The safety, security and comfort of our guests and team members are always our top priorities, and we are truly heartbroken by this incident, Cobb Theatres, which operates the Grove complex, said in a written statement. On the theaters' website is a list of prohibited items and actions. Among them: No cell phone use, including texting, in the theater auditorium. And no weapons allowed.- published: 02 Feb 2014

http://moneyandtech.com/June-3-news-update/ Following its Worldwide Developer's Conference on Monday, Apple released an update to its App Store Review Guidelines that could bode well for bitcoin and other digital currencies. The update states that quote "Apps may facilitate transmission of approved virtual currencies provided that they do so in compliance with all state and federal laws for the territories in which the app functions." It is still unclear if bitcoin will be one of these "approved" virtual currencies. But if so, this could mean the computing giant will finally allow bitcoin wallet apps like Blockchain and Coinbase, which it had previously pulled from its app store. We spoke with Blockchain's Director of Product Dan Held, who said quote "we are cautiously optimistic. The language used doesn't clearly define what requirements Apple sees as "approved virtual currencies" or what they may stipulate as fully compliant. We are exploring this opportunity thoroughly and we hope that Apple will be lenient in their interpretation." The US Securities and Exchange Commission announced today that it has charged bitcoin entrepreneur and evangelist Erik Voorhees with offering shares to bitcoin-related websites SatoshiDICE and Feed Ze Birds without first registering them, as required by federal securities laws. Voorhees has reportedly agreed to settle charges against him, forfeiting the over $15,000 dollars in profits as well as paying an additional $35,000 dollar penalty. This appears to be the first SEC action taken to address the growing number of bitcoin companies trading publicly without SEC approval. Great American Insurance Group's Fidelity/Crime Division has become the first in the insurance industry to offer commercial coverage for bitcoin, in an effort to meet the evolving needs of its customers. The extended crime policy will include protection for employee dishonesty, money and securities, forgery and computer fraud, and is now available in most states to both commercial and government policy holders who accept bitcoin. The UK's Financial Conduct Authority, which has until now steered clear of digital currencies, has announced a new initiative called Project Innovate that could help boost bitcoin businesses in the UK. FCA Chief Executive Martin Wheatley says their new initiative is designed to promote innovation in the financial sector, creating room for "the brightest and most innovative" companies, and recognizing that virtual currencies, crowd funding, and peer-to-peer are among the industry's most transformative developments. The Dutch central bank has issued a warning on bitcoin to banks and other financial institutions, advising them to be aware of the integrity risks in processing digital currency transactions. However, the warning does not address digital currency's end-users, focusing only on how financial institutions should tread carefully, given the relatively high degree of anonymity and possible indirect effect on their reputation. South Africa-based digital currency exchange iceCUBED has now expanded its full service to Botswana users, thanks to efforts from its new chief evangelist, Alakanani Itireleng, who has become Botswana's key Bitcoin evangelist. As part of her mission, Alakanani has also joined forces with the SOS children's village in Botswana, eager to show how bitcoin can help raise funds without borders and quote "also show that we in the bitcoin community are not greedy or thieves as people tend to think. Let the good outshine the bad and I am trying to do just that." Leading banking and finance executives will gather next week on June 11th and 12th in London to share insights into current trends and emerging innovations in payments systems at this year's PayExpo event. Attendees will be treated to four separate conferences, the Future of Payments Summit, Merchant Payments, Mobile Money Europe and Prepaid 2014 with a packed agenda of workshops and notable exhibits such as financial services tech provider Fiserv and alternative digital currency NXT. The python's extremely flexible jaw meant it took just 45 minutes to gulp down the animal. Footage of the animal's feeding technique was captured by Fred von Winckelmann, from the Netherlands, whilst on a game drive. Mr von Winckelmann said: "Seeing an African rock python swallowing a young impala is a once-in-a-lifetime sighting." He added: "The snake was calmly swallowing his meal without giving us any attention, so I was allowed to go belly-down to get eye-level photos of the reptile. "We arrived when the snake was starting to dislocate its jaws around the antelope's waist and in 45 minutes it swallowed the last hooves. "That was when we let the python digest it in peace because they are so vulnerable when doing so." In order to swallow such large prey, python have evolved jaws rigged with tendons, muscles and ligaments that allow them to stretch to extraordinary lengths. Village of Hope: Nata, Botswana
On March 4, 2006, Nata made history by becoming the first village in Botswana with a website. The site is a unique opportunity for the reader to witness the battle to control the spread of HIV/AIDS in an African village. Botswana has the second highest HIV infection rate in the world (37% for ages 15-49). The co-founders, Melody Jenkins a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer, Seloma Tiro a local businessman and Jon Rawlinson were all frustrated that millions of dollars pour into Botswana due to the AIDS pandemic yet little money reaches remote villages like Nata. The website http://natavillage.typepad.com offers the visitor a 10 minute documentary, over 350 flickr photos and a blog that gives the reader an intimate look into the lives of the villagers. The reader is given the opportunity to donate directly to the village and the funds are managed transparently by a local 6 member board of trustees with very little overhead cost. The donor can see the results of their generosity through regular photos of what is purchased. People living with AIDS (PLWA's) in Nata must travel 60 miles to reach the ARV (anti-retroviral ) clinic. Many can't afford the $4.00 bus fare. The trust provides transportation money for all members of the PLWA support group to reach their life saving ARV's. The trust also purchased a sound system and generator for an out of school youth group that provides vital HIV/AIDS educational activities to Nata and the surrounding villages. We hope to serve as a model for other villages and change the way aid is distributed in the developing world. To date the website has raised over $50,000 for the village. Jon Rawlinson designed and built the Nata village blog. He also shot and produced this documentary about the village. This aired on Current TV in 2007.- published: 09 Apr 2014
