In Uzbekistan
In Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan is a country in Central Asia, once a crucial 'hub' on the Silk Road. This is the region's cradle of culture for more than two millennia, where cities like Samarkand and Bukhara evoke images of once great empires. Rulers like Genghis Khan and Timur, however ruthless their rule, seem to resonate in many corners of Uzbekistan. Before becoming part of the Russian empire in the 19th century, Uzbekistan was conquered by nomads who spoke Eastern Turkic languages, which is the foundation of today's Uzbek language. In the 20th century, Uzbekistan became part of the Soviet Union until it collapsed in the early 90s. Surprisingly, many people have managed to hold on to their traditional culture, despite the long Russian influence. Islam is still the main religion, and the vast majority of the population are Muslim. In 2013, I traveled across Uzbekistan, visiting places like Khiva, Bukhara, Samarkand, Tashkent, and the Fergana Valley. Despite the current political and economic situation in the country, the Uzbek people I met remained good spirited, and showed an incredible hospitality. The people of Uzbekistan are the main theme in this clip, at work, in restaurants, in busy bazaars, and other places. I used a traditional song to accompany the images. Music festival in Uzbekistan
I am putting together segments about the artisans who invited me to see how they work, up close, . This is a land of vibrant color and culture; when I visited the Savitsky museum in Nukus, Karakalpakstan, I saw many works by Russian Avant-Garde painters who were drawn as much to the quality of the light here, as they were seeking to avoid the "light" of soviet scrutiny. The festival itself is a kind of gateway, and would make a terrific jumping off place for a tour of the major historic cities of Samarkand, Khiva and Bukhara. Consider this, next time you feel the urge to go someplace different.- published: 07 Feb 2014

Film by Kamola Ikramova about Uzbek national folklore
Uzbek Folklore includes the folk songs and dances through which the social customs, culture, lifestyle, beliefs, aspirations and expectations of the people are reflected. The Norbek Bakhshi & Doston folklore ethnographic band of Uzbekistan is quite popular for hosting many a popular shows in the country. Being a vital link to the Uzbekistan arts and entertainment, the folklore of the country provides a detailed insight into the core culture of the place. Folk music is the prime medium through which Uzbekistan presents its inherent features to the outer world. Categorized into two main divisions such as ceremonial and daily life songs, the folk music of Uzbekistan covers the entire gamut of the country's various socio-cultural aspects. As a part of the Uzbek folklore the ceremonial songs are based on themes of family, wedding, history and love. Whereas the daily life songs of Uzbek folklore center around work, social protest and many others. It is said that, Tamerlane who was a Mongol warrior and his grandson Ulughbek who enriched the astronomy branch of science, were the two prime figures who had a significant contribution towards the Uzbek folklore. There is no denying the fact that today, Uzbek folklore has become an important symbolization of the cultural dynamism of the country- published: 29 Aug 2013

Uzbekistan at the Central Asian Spring Festival 2014
We are delighted to invite You to the biggest event celebration of spring, the CENTRAL ASIAN SPRING FESTIVAL IN LONDON 2014. The festival Navruz (also known in various countries as Neuruz, Nauryz, Navruz, Novruz, Nooruz or Nowruz) has been celebrated through the centuries. At its core, the event encompasses concepts of peace, charity, purity and love. This year marks the 5th anniversary of the Spring Festival in London. Student societies from six countries are uniting to celebrate this wonderful occasion and invite you to join the festivities! Buy Tickets Online: http://spring-festival14.eventbrite.com/ (when purchasing a ticket please specify which Society you wish the funds to be donated to.) It is a truly unique opportunity to explore the rich traditions and cultures of countries with rich and ancient histories: Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tatarstan (Russian Federation). You will have an exciting opportunity to taste various national cuisines, see traditional clothes and folklore, and enjoy performances of young talents, games and demonstrations of traditions of six countries. Various regional favourites will be featured, including PLOV cooked right during the event courtesy of our professional chef, a traditional Kazakh YURT, Azerbaijani backgammon championship, fun traditional games, souvenirs, and much, much, more! Dating its roots back to March 2008, Navruz at UCL has over the years become a real tradition! This year marks the 5th Anniversary Year of the event, a milestone for the respective societies involved. On this occasion, we are planning on welcoming a record 1500 guests, having moved the event fully outdoors. Your ticket covers two portions of food, soft drinks, an exhibition and a show presented by all societies. All proceeds are traditionally donated towards charity causes in respective Central Asian countries. This year's Central Asian Spring Festival Celebrations are proudly sponsored by The European Azerbaijan Society (TEAS), a UK-registered pan-European organisation dedicated to raising awareness of Azerbaijan and fostering closer economic, political and cultural links between that country and the nations of Europe. http://teas.eu/ We look forward welcoming you!
