Lesotho (
i/lᵻˈsuːtuː/; li-SOO-too), officially the Kingdom of Lesotho (Sotho: 'Muso oa Lesotho), is an enclaved, landlocked country in southern Africa completely surrounded by South Africa. It is just over 30,000 km2 (11,583 sq mi) in size and has a population slightly over two million. Its capital and largest city is Maseru. Lesotho is a member of the United Nations, the Commonwealth of Nations and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The name Lesotho translates roughly into the land of the people who speak Sesotho. About 40% of the population lives below the international poverty line of US $1.25 a day.
History
The present Lesotho, then called Basutoland, emerged as a single polity under King Moshoeshoe I in 1822. Moshoeshoe, a son of Mokhachane, a minor chief of the Bakoteli lineage, formed his own clan and became a chief around 1804. Between 1821 and 1823, he and his followers settled at the Butha-Buthe Mountain, joining with former adversaries in resistance against the Lifaqane associated with the reign of Shaka Zulu from 1818 to 1828.

Lesotho’s ‘white gold’ is the water which plays an important role in the south African country’s economy. This is largely due to the Katse dam which, standing at 185m (600 feet) tall, it is Africa’s second largest curved dam. But despite being water rich the country remains economically poor and its citizens haven’t been feeling the benefits. Demands have increased for Lesotho’s water from other parts of southern Africa, including South Africa where, in Johannesburg, taps run dry due to its growing populations and climate change. During the long winter months, the country is covered with snow and in the middle of the peeled mountains, there is even a ski slope very popular with South Africans. On the dirt tracks and deserted roads that cross the mountains, Alice and Fébellina struggle to find new customers for their old taxi. New encounters, mechanical troubles, but also fear and bursts of laughter punctuate the wanderings of the two friends. Justice has no place in the heart of these lost mountains. Cattle rustlers and other criminals sow terror in isolated villages. The police do not venture there: there is no road. The only alternative to crime: the mounted militia. Fierce horsemen who tirelessly chase outlaws from valley to valley. They are nicknamed The Wrath of the Lion. In the no man's land that separates South Africa from Lesotho, vehicles have to face a winding road strewn with pitfalls and cross the Sani Pass, a pass with a sinister reputation, under the gusts of wind. There are very few gas stations in the interior of the country, gasoline is scarce. Reckless drivers face the precipices to supply the lost villages.

Lesotho, formerly known as Basutoland, was renamed to the Kingdom of Lesotho upon independence. It is a country in Southern Africa with an area of over 30,000 square kilometers and a population of about 2 million people. It was previously a British Protectorate. Lesotho gained independence on October 4th 1966 and is a member of the United Nations, the African Union, the Commonwealth of Nations and Southern African Development Community(SADC). Maseru is its capital and largest city. ‘Lesotho’ loosely translates to ‘The Land of the Sotho’. Its people are referred to as Basotho and its currency is Lesotho loti and South African rand.
Lesotho’s position is unusual. It is the Southernmost landlocked country in the world. It is the largest of the world’s three independent states completely surrounded by another country’s territory. San Marino and Vatican City are the other two states. Lesotho is also the only state of its kind outside of the Italian peninsula and is a microstate as well. The country is simply an enclave.

Lesotho is a small kingdom landlocked in the gigantic territory of South Africa. Among the poorest in the world, this high country has breathtaking landscapes, but above all it has a rare and precious asset in Africa: water. During the long winter months, the country is covered with snow and in the middle of the peeled mountains, there is even a ski slope very popular with South Africans. On the dirt tracks and deserted roads that cross the mountains, Alice and Fébellina struggle to find new customers for their old taxi. New encounters, mechanical troubles, but also fear and bursts of laughter punctuate the wanderings of the two friends. Justice has no place in the heart of these lost mountains. Cattle rustlers and other criminals sow terror in isolated villages. The police do not venture there: there is no road. The only alternative to crime: the mounted militia. Fierce horsemen who tirelessly chase outlaws from valley to valley. They are nicknamed The Wrath of the Lion. In the no man's land that separates South Africa from Lesotho, vehicles have to face a winding road strewn with pitfalls and cross the Sani Pass, a pass with a sinister reputation, under the gusts of wind. There are very few gas stations in the interior of the country, gasoline is scarce. Reckless drivers face the precipices to supply the lost villages.

Lesotho’s ‘white gold’ is the water which plays an important role in the south African country’s economy.
This is largely due to the Katse dam which, standing at 185m (600 feet) tall, it is Africa’s second largest curved dam.
But despite being water rich the country remains economically poor and its citizens haven’t been feeling the benefits.
Demands have increased for Lesotho’s water from other parts of southern Africa, including South Africa where, in Johannesburg, taps run dry due to its growing populations and climate change.
Government officials have acknowledged the problem and say they are acting to address it.

Lesotho, a small nation in Southern Africa, is know as the "kingdom in the sky", for its high altitutde and natural beauty. It is also at the peak of a grim statistic: a suicide rate ten times the global average - that's nine suicides per 100,000 people. The country with a population of 2,3 million has only one psychiatric unit. The reasons for the tragic tally vary, ranging from unemployment to sexual violence. A local NGO, @helplesotho, is trying to change the game by holding therapy sessions in several locations.

Lesotho (i/lᵻˈsuːtuː/; li-SOO-too), officially the Kingdom of Lesotho (Sotho: 'Muso oa Lesotho), is an enclaved, landlocked country in southern Africa completely surrounded by South Africa. It is just over 30,000 km2 (11,583 sq mi) in size and has a population slightly over two million. Its capital and largest city is Maseru. Lesotho is a member of the United Nations, the Commonwealth of Nations and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The name Lesotho translates roughly into the land of the people who speak Sesotho. About 40% of the population lives below the international poverty line of US $1.25 a day.
History
The present Lesotho, then called Basutoland, emerged as a single polity under King Moshoeshoe I in 1822. Moshoeshoe, a son of Mokhachane, a minor chief of the Bakoteli lineage, formed his own clan and became a chief around 1804. Between 1821 and 1823, he and his followers settled at the Butha-Buthe Mountain, joining with former adversaries in resistance against the Lifaqane associated with the reign of Shaka Zulu from 1818 to 1828.
