Uzbekistan travel day one - Arriving in Andijan after crossing the border
My Uzbekistan travel day one started after crossing the Kyrgyz-Uzbek border at the Dostuk checkpoint close to the city of Osh in Kyrgyzstan. I finally managed to step into the Uzbek territory after checking my passport, visa, and doing a quick security check of my belongings. From there I took a marshrutka to Andijan (or Andijon) which is the first city you are supposed to land in after the border crossing and on your way to the capital city Tashkent.

The Terrible Aftermath of the Andijan Massacre
Andijan Massacre (2005): One year on and there is still no justice for those killed in the massacre in Andijan, Uzbekistan on 13 May 2005. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures
After an attempt by gunmen to release religious extremists in the jails, the whole town was moved to protest not simply over the men in prison but poverty and a repressive government regime. Hundreds of unarmed people were killed and injured. This film was made by the first camera crew to make it to Andijan. Having secretly entered the town via Kyrgyzstan, they interview those involved both in Andijan itself, and in the refugee camps that the tragedy created.

This video was originally published on May 13, 2006, on the one year anniversary of the massacre.
On May 13, 2005, Uzbek government forces killed hundreds of unarmed people who participated in a massive public protest in the eastern Uzbek city of Andijan. The scale of this killing was so extensive, and its nature was so indiscriminate and disproportionate, that it can best be described as a massacre. A Human Rights Watch field investigation in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan recreated a comprehensive account of the events of May 13 and 14 in Andijan. Our findings clearly demonstrate the Uzbek government forces' undeniable responsibility for the massacre.

Uzbekistan: Decade of Impunity for Massacre
On May 13, 2005, government forces opened fire on thousands of mostly peaceful protesters in the central square in the town of Andijan, a city in the Fergana Valley in eastern Uzbekistan. The protesters had gathered to speak out against poverty, unemployment, and government repression, and to call on the government to respond to their plight.

12. Wide shot talks
STORYLINE:
Uzbek president Islam Karimov said on Tuesday that the violently suppressed May uprising in his Central Asian nation was planned from abroad.
Speaking during a meeting with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, Karimov said "we have enough facts to prove that the operation was prepared several months and perhaps several years in advance from outside Uzbekistan".
The meeting at Putin's residence outside Moscow took place during the authoritarian leader's second foreign trip following the May government crackdown on protesters in eastern Uzbekistan.
The first was to Beijing.
Moscow has steadfastly backed Karimov in his rejection of international demands for an independent investigation into the suppression of the uprising in Andijan, in which rights activists say government troops killed up to 750 people.
Uzbek authorities deny that troops fired on unarmed civilians and put the death toll at 176.
They have blamed the violence on Islamic militants intent on destabilising Uzbekistan and the wider Central Asian region.
Putin said Russian secret services had information about militants crossing from Afghanistan into Central Asia, and had warned governments in the region before the Andijan events.
He said "as you know, we had information about infiltration by militants from Afghanistan. We informed our colleagues in all the countries where they concentrated, but I am not sure to what extent this information was conveyed to you in time".
"This problem of course exists," Putin said.
Last week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov claimed that militants, with the participation of former Taliban and members of the extremist Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, were training in Afghanistan, as well as Pakistan, to carry out terrorist attacks, including in Russia.
A day earlier, Putin said Russia - which is battling a separatist insurgency in its largely Muslim southern province of Chechnya - and other ex-Soviet nations were concerned about terrorist training bases in Afghanistan.
Unrest erupted in the eastern city of Andijan on May 13, when militants seized a local prison and government headquarters.

STORYLINE
Sporadic shooting was said to continue on Monday in the eastern Uzbek town of Andijan where an uprising sparked a crackdown by security forces that reportedly left up to 500 people dead.
Residents said government troops were fighting militants in Bogishonol, an outlying district of the city, but the claim could not officially be confirmed.
Monday's reported unrest came two days after witnesses claimed some 500 people were killed in Andijan when government troops put down an uprising by alleged Islamic militants and citizens protesting dire economic conditions.
Saidjahon Zaynabitdinov, head of the local Appeal human rights advocacy group, on Monday denied that the demonstrators were part of an Islamic uprising, as asserted by the Uzbek government.
He said it was a political demonstration with people protesting at the country's dire economic conditions.
The government of President Islam Karimov has denied opening fire on demonstrators as witnesses have claimed, but the authoritarian government has sought to restrict access for reporters in the affected areas.
The Appeal human rights group on Monday also reported that clashes in another town killed an additional 200.
It said that government troops had killed about 200 demonstrators on Saturday in Pakhtabad, about 30 kilometres (18 miles) northeast of Andijan.
There was no independent confirmation of his claim.
Meanwhile, spreading unrest in an Uzbek region bordering Kyrgyzstan also left 11 people dead in clashes on Sunday in a third town and sparked a rampage by residents in a fourth town on Saturday, witnesses said.
If the reports of more than 700 deaths since Friday hold true and if Uzbek forces were behind the killing - as most reports indicate - it would be some of the worst state-inspired bloodshed since the massacre of protesters in China's Tiananmen Square in 1989.

Diplomats and UN officials toured the eastern Uzbekistan city of Andijan under government escort on Wednesday to investigate widely differing accounts of recent bloodshed.
In response to a request by Britain and others, Uzbek authorities allowed a visit to Andijan by a group of 35 diplomats and 30 journalists, who arrived Wednesday on a government-organised flight.
Accounts have varied greatly on the death toll. The government cites 169 dead in Andijan, but opposition activists say more than 700 were killed _ more than 500 in Andijan and about 200 in Pakhtabad _ most of them civilians.
U.N. officials on Wednesday toured Andijan's regional emergency hospital, which was treating 106 people wounded in the riots.
Meanwhile on Wednesday, rebel leader, Bakhtiyor Rakhimov, deepened the crisis in eastern Uzbekistan by announcing an Islamic uprising in his border town of Korasuv.
The government of President Islam Karimov quickly shrugged off Rakhimov's claims, but he asserted that his 5,000-strong forces controlled Korasuv, a town of 20,000 on the Kyrgyz border, and were ready to fight any government troops that came to crush his rebellion.
The uprising in Korasuv began with attacks on police and government posts on Saturday, a day after the region exploded in unrest with thousands of protesters taking to the streets in Uzbekistan's fourth-largest city, Andijan, in a rage over the trial of 23 Muslims and complaints of economic hardship.

STORYLINE:
Seven Uzbeks, wounded in last week's crackdown in Andijan, said they were shot like "dogs" by government troops.
Speaking from their hospital beds in neighbouring Kyrgyzstan, the men said they had tried to protect the women, children and old people who were also at the peaceful demonstration in a square in Andijan but the troops shot at them indiscriminately.
The men fled Andijan last Friday after the shooting and made their way over the border to Suzak in Kyrgyzstan.
The head doctor at the Suzak hospital said after examining the men's wounds, he concluded they had been shot by high-powered machine guns.
The Uzbek government has denied its troops opened fire on innocent civilians during anti-government protests in the city of Andijan last Friday, though it says 169 people were killed in clashes between authorities and militants.
But opposition activists say that at least 500 - mostly civilians - were killed in Andijan.
Other observers estimate the total death toll at 200 to 300.

Uzbekistan Day 1: Tashkent
On Day 1 in Uzbekistan we went on an ultimate Uzbek street food tour in Tashkent, including the biggest bazaar in the city, and the most massive plov (rice pilau) cooking in Tashkent.
We had arrived at the airport in Tashkent at about 4 am in the morning, and at 9 am we were ready to start eating our way through the city.
First we met up with Bekruz and Akbar both from the Ministry of Tourism Uzbekistan (Bekruz is the one who invited me to Uzbekistan and arranged everything for us, so thank you Bekruz!), and Ravshan (check out his channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClLf00Mg3N3g0Wo8_516tUA), a local food vlogger in Uzbekistan.
Two of the most important phrases you should know in Uzbek are:
Assalomu Alaykum - Hello / Greeting
Rahmat - Thank you
Bread Bazaar, Tashkent - We started this ultimate street food tour at the bread bazaar in Tashkent, a market dedicated fully to bread, with a little fruit and other things mixed in. We bought some break, some kaymak, and some fruit and then went to a nearby restaurant where they laid everything on the table for us, along with tea. Uzbek breakfast was a great way to get started.
Chorsu Bazaar - The grandest bazaar in Tashkent is Chorus Bazaar, and it’s a perfect place to get a feel of Uzbek culture and food. We first stopped at the food court to try hanum, a type of dumpling filled with potato and somsa. Then we continued to the dome shaped iconic part of the bazaar, filled with fresh meat and spices. It’s one of the coolest market structures anywhere in the world.
Plov Center - We kind of had to rush out of Chorsu Bazaar because although they prepare 1,500 Kilos, seriously, of rice plov per day, it only takes 2 - 3 hours before they run out everyday. So we got there, already one of the monster swimming pool pans was finished, but they still had a few others going and serving. Plov is the national dish of Uzbekistan, a food that’s eaten on every and all occasions. For Tashkent plov, it’s pretty heavy on the meat at oil, with rice, chickpeas, and raisins. Also it included, qazi - horsemeat sausage which is a delicacy. It was incredibly delicious, and proper meal experience.
Total price - 100,000 UZS ($12.21)
Plov is love, remember that when you’re in Uzbekistan.
National Food Restaurant - After strolling around for a while in the afternoon, we continued to a National Food restaurant, a laid back family style restaurant that serves all things Uzbek food. Along with a number of dishes, the main dish I was most interested in was the naryn, thin slices of dough mixed with minced meat and horse. It was interesting, and quite good, as were the other dishes.
Total price - 110,000 UZS ($13.43)
Sultan Suleyman Restaurant - For dinner we went to a bit of a fancy trendy restaurant, and had another platter of food. This time, dough noodle like sheets topped with meat, horse sausage again, and green onions.
Total price - 122,000 UZS ($14.90)
It was a day of learning, eating, and meeting some amazing people along the way. Thank you for watching this Uzbekistan food tour!
