Us Prisoner # 429 - Kim Dong Chul
Kim Dong Chul is a Korean American businessman who was imprisoned by North Korea's government in October 2015 and sentenced to hard labor for alleged espionage. Kim was one of three Americans detained in that country who were released on May 9, 2018. Tony Kim, also known as Kim Sang-Duk, and Kim Hak-Song were among the others. Kim was said to be a Christian who participated in missionary work. Kim was detained in October 2015. His whereabouts were unknown until January 2016, when the DPRK introduced him to a CNN crew in Pyongyang. CNN was granted permission to interview Kim, but only through an interpreter. He appeared at a government-arranged news conference in Pyongyang in March 2016 and "apologized for trying to steal military secrets in collusion with South Koreans"; South Korean authorities denied any involvement. North Korea sentenced Kim to ten years of hard labor in April 2016 for espionage and other crimes. Kim's arrest and detention followed a pattern seen in other North Korean detentions of US citizens: a forced confession, a show trial, and a sentence of years of hard labor with little chance of appeal. On May 9, 2018, several news outlets reported that Kim and fellow American detainees Kim Sang-Duk and Kim Hak Song had been granted amnesty following a meeting in Pyongyang between Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to discuss details of Kim and President Donald Trump's planned summit. In a subsequent joint statement, the three men expressed their gratitude to the United States government, President Trump, Secretary Pompeo, and the American people for bringing them home.
Starving Children
North Korean orphanages are expanding as starving parents abandon their children in the middle of the night in the hope that the children will at least be able to eat. The desperate acts are motivated in part by the belief that orphanages receive food and medicine donated by the international community. Women who are starving to death abandon their children and vanish without a trace. They are aware that the international community has sent food, oil, and clothing to orphanages over the years, ensuring that the children do not go hungry. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990s, North Korea has faced chronic food shortages. With the coronavirus pandemic, North Korea and China closed their borders and suspended all trade, worsening the food situation. Despite the return of rail freight, food shortages remain worse than they were before the pandemic. Foreign aid is on the decline. Between 2016 and 2020, North Korea received approximately $40 million in aid per year. However, COVID-19 policies that rejected outside assistance resulted in a sharp decrease in aid to $14 million in 2021, and then to $2.3 million in 2022. While it is unknown how much aid went to orphanages each year, it is reasonable to assume that they received less than they did before the pandemic. Pukchang County, which has a population of approximately 140,000 people, has thus seen the small orphanage's population grow to approximately 110 children. Babies have been arriving on the doorsteps of two orphanages in the same province, in the city of Sunchon, almost every week. Most North Korean families must run side businesses because government-assigned jobs do not pay enough to live on. A significant portion of side businesses involves purchasing imported goods in one location and reselling them at a higher price in another. As a result of the resulting lack of income, many people, including families with children, have had to reduce their food intake. Residents, on the other hand, criticize the authorities, claiming that they are not doing enough to address the issue of people's livelihoods, to the point where people are willing to abandon their children. Life as an orphan in North Korea is often spent performing forced labor for the state.

It was reportedly launched from the vicinity of Pukchang County, in the west coast province of Pyongannamdo.
Seoul's military authorities have begun their preliminary analysis, but for now, they do not believe it was an intercontinental ballistic missile, or ICBM.
Within minutes from the JCS announcement, the presidential office of Cheong Wa Dae held a news conference... saying President Moon Jae-in has ordered his Chief of National Security Office Chung Eui-yong to chair a National Security Council committee meeting.
That meeting JUST kicked off at 6 pm Korea time.

Why is it considered so difficult to escape from North Korea? North Korea does not allow people to leave their country. And if you decide to defect and you're caught you and three generations could be tortured and sent to a death camp such as Pukchang political prison.

You would think it would be easy to cross the border into South Korea. However, it is the most militarized border on earth, with North Korean guards ready to kill anyone who tries. If they successfully cross the border into China or Russia and they're caught within those countries, they will be deported back to North Korea and face their punishments. Now, perhaps you think it's feasible to take a boat through the Sea of Japan. However, most of their boats are short-range fishing boats in poor condition with extremely few who can even afford them. There are also plenty of North Korean patrols in that area, with only three having made the journey to Japan successfully. On average, only around 1000 people escape North Korea per year.
