Iraq's Shia cleric Muqtada al Sadr is putting pressure on Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to carry out reforms to fight corruption.
Sadr has managed to rally a huge number of angry Iraqi protesters who are demanding Abadi introduce reforms to put an end to corruption.
Last month, Sadr demanded Iraqi politicians be replaced with technocrats and the country's powerful Shia militias be incorporated into the ministries of Defence and Interior.
In the following weeks he called on his supporters to take to the streets, and each Friday their numbers grew.
While Iraq's political leadership has proposed multiple reform plans, some echoing Sadr's own demands, progress in parliament has been slow.
So, how far will Sadr go to push for change? And is this only about fighting corruption?

01/04/2008 - Award winning war correspondent Patrick Cockburn examines the role of Muqtada al-Sadr -- the man who leads a movement in Iraq that opposed both Saddam Hussein and the US occupation.
Patrick Cockburn is the Middle East correspondent for the Independent and has been reporting from Iraq since 1978. He was awarded the 2005 Martha Gellhorn prize for war reporting and the James Cameron Memorial Award in 2006. He is the author of The Occupation: War and Resistance in Iraq (shortlisted for a National Book Critics Circle Award in 2007), The Broken Boy, a memoir, and, with Andrew Cockburn, Out of the Ashes: The Resurrection of Saddam Hussein.
In his latest book Muqtada Al-Sadr and the Fall of Iraq he describes one of the most important political figures in post-occupation Iraq. At first grossly underestimated by the US, Al-Sadr has become the kingmaker in Iraq and a force that is indispensable to any Iraqi government. His combination of nationalism and religious fervour have also proved deeply attractive to countless angry and impoverished Iraqi Shia.

Muqtada al-Sadr
Muqtadā al-Ṣadr (Arabic: سيد مقتدى الصدر; born 12 August 1973) is an Iraqi Islamic popular leader.
Sayyid Muqtada al-Sadr is one of the most influential religious and popular figures in Iraq, despite not holding any official title in the Iraqi government. He is the leader of a political party, the Sadrist Movement.
Titles
He is of the prominent Sadr family originating from Jabal Amel in Lebanon but later settled in Najaf, his father-in-law being Mohammad Baqir al-Sadr. He is often referred to as Sayyid Muqtada al-Sadr. The title Sayyid ("Mr." or "Sir") is generally used among Shi‘a Muslims related to Mohammed through his daughter Fatimah's marriage with Ali. Thus, a great deal of respect is paid by the Shiite Muslims to the Sayyids throughout society.
Western media often refer to Muqtada al-Sadr as a "anti-american" or "radical" cleric, but his formal religious standing is comparatively low, at a mid-ranking Shia religious rank perhaps reflecting his youth, and he does not claim the title of mujtahid (the equivalent of a senior religious scholar) or the authority to issue fatwas. In early 2008, however, al-Sadr was reported to be studying to be an ayatollah, which would greatly improve his religious standing.

Abu Bakr
Abū Bakr ‘Abdallāh bin Abī Quḥāfah aṣ-Ṣiddīq (Arabic: أبو بكر عبد الله بن أبي قحافة الصديق; c. 573 CE – 23 August 634 CE) popularly known as Abu Bakr (أبو بكر), was a senior companion (Sahabi) and—through his daughter Aisha—the father-in-law of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Abu Bakr became the first openly declared Muslim outside Muhammad's family. Abu Bakr served as a trusted advisor to Muhammad. During Muhammad's lifetime, he was involved in several campaigns and treaties.
He ruled over the Rashidun Caliphate from 632 to 634 CE, when he became the first Muslim Caliph following Muhammad's death. As caliph, Abu Bakr succeeded to the political and administrative functions previously exercised by Muhammad. He was commonly known as The Truthful (Arabic: الصديق, translit. As-Saddīq). Abu Bakr's reign lasted for 27 months, ending with his death after an illness.
Lineage and title
Abu Bakr's full name was Abd Allah ibn 'Uthman ibn Aamir ibn Amr ibn Ka'ab ibn Sa'ad ibn Taym (from whom the at-Taymi al-Quraishi) ibn Murrah ibn Ka'ab ibn Lu'ai ibn Ghalib ibn Fihr al-Quraishi.

Sadr has managed to rally a huge number of angry Iraqi protesters who are demanding Abadi introduce reforms to put an end to corruption.
Last month, Sadr demanded Iraqi politicians be replaced with technocrats and the country's powerful Shia militias be incorporated into the ministries of Defence and Interior.
In the following weeks he called on his supporters to take to the streets, and each Friday their numbers grew.
While Iraq's political leadership has proposed multiple reform plans, some echoing Sadr's own demands, progress in parliament has been slow.
So, how far will Sadr go to push for change? And is this only about fighting corruption?

An American Humvee lies in flames, destroyed by a suicide bomber. Nearby a woman, blinded in the assault, begs for news of her mother. As people stop to help, snipers open fire, killing one Iraqi guardsman and wounding another. It's just one of five car bombings in Baghdad occurring on this day. Sadr city has become a war zone with US forces and their Iraqi National Guard allies fighting the Shiites. High levels of unemployment and a deterioration of living conditions have fuelled the insurgence. "I go out from the morning until the afternoon looking for work and I can't find it," complains Wassim. Like many residents, he's angry that the Americans have not delivered on their promises and has turned instead to Sadr's Mehdi army. "You have seen the rubbish on the streets. There is no water, the gutters are overflowing. Only the Mehdi army is cleaning it." With squalor and unemployment providing fertile grounds for insurgency groups, hopes of a peaceful resolution look slim.

STORYLINE
Iraq's Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr on Thursday said he maintained "friendship and good relations" with Iran but rejected any interference by Tehran in Iraq's affairs.
He made the comments in an interview on Iraqi state television, nearly two weeks after he re-emerged in public for the first time after dropping out of sight amid a US-Iraqi security crackdown that began nearly four months ago.
Dressed in his customary black clerical robes and turban, the cleric made no major policy announcement during the nearly hour-long interview and mostly repeated his standard fare of fervent anti-American rhetoric.
Seated on an armchair opposite his interviewer, al-Sadr appeared to have lost some weight but his hallmark robust delivery was unchanged.
He dodged a question about his disappearance from public view during which he was believed to have been in neighbouring Iran to avoid arrest as the Americans and the Iraqi government promised to crack down on his militia as well as Sunni insurgents in their operation that began February 14.
Al-Sadr is believed to be seeking to rein in his fractured militia as well as to be honing plans to consolidate political gains and foster ties with Iran.
Al-Sadr's militia, which fought US forces in 2004, has been blamed for much of the Sunni-Shiite sectarian violence in Iraq.
The US accuses Iran of fuelling the violence by providing weapons and training to Shiite militiamen attacking its forces.
Iran denies the charges and last month entered its first direct talks with the United States in nearly three decades to find ways to stabilise Iraq.

LOCKHART, Texas (AP) — Federal officials say a hot air balloon carrying at least 16 people caught on fire and crashed in Central Texas, and it is unclear whether there are injuries or deaths. Lynn Lunsford with the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement that the accident happened about 8.40 a.m. Saturday near Lockhart, Texas, when the hot air balloon crashed into a pasture ...
