Early Edition 18:00 Two Koreas exchange fire at maritime border

Artillery fire was exchanged between the two Koreas earlier this Monday afternoon. In the midst of live-fire drills, hundreds of North Korean artillery shells landed south of the inter-Korean maritime border. The South Korean military responded by firing back across the Northern Limit Line. For details, let's go live to our correspondent Hwang Sung-hee at the Arirang News Center. Sung-hee, give us the details. The exchange of fire between the two Koreas came to an end at about 3:30 p.m. Korea time, which was about three hours ago. It all began a little past noon on this Monday after North Korea began live-fire drills in seven West Sea border regions, north of the Northern Limit Line. In an emergency press briefing held immediately after the North wrapped up the exercises, South Korea's Defense Ministry Spokesperson said North Korea fired around 500 artillery shells in waters north of the Northern Limit Line. Some 100 of those shells fell south of the NLL in South Korean waters near Baengnyeongdo Island. In response, the South Korean military shot around 300 artillery shells back across the NLL using K-9 self-propelled howitzers. Thousands of residents on South Korea's border islands were told to take cover in shelters. Pyongyang, however, says Monday's drills were part of its regular military exercises. North Korea had notified South Korea of its plans to conduct live-fire drills this morning, not giving a specific time for the planned exercise, but demanding that Seoul keep its vessels out of the training zone. How is the South Korean military now preparing for the event of another incident? South Korea's defense ministry took the unusual warning from its neighbor this morning as a hostile threat. This is the first time in recent history that the North has conducted a live-fire drill in all seven West Sea border regions. It's also the first time it's informed the South of the exercise ahead of time. Defense Ministry Spokesperson Kim Min-seok said the South Korean military will work closely with the United States and keep close watch for possible clashes. He added the South will react sternly if North Korea commits any provocative actions on South Korean land or waters. The South Korean military has activated crisis management operations and has deployed naval convoys near the NLL to cope with any contingencies. Officials in Seoul have been on high alert and the presidential National Security Council is expected to convene an emergency meeting later this evening. It's worth mentioning that this is not the first time the North has fired artillery shells this direction. In 2010, North Korea launched artillery strikes on a South Korean border island, killing four people. Thank you for your report, Sung-hee. Korea's pace of economic recovery is in question once again.... with the nation's output in the manufacturing and mining sector falling 2-point-7 percent in May from a month earlier. That marks the biggest drop since December 2008... when the global financial crisis broke. Statistics Korea says... that the dip came largely from the automobile and semiconductor industry... which saw sluggish exports last month, BUT added... that the weak data does NOT necessarily mean the Korean economy is losing momentum. "The dip in exports is mainly due to fewer working days in May, prompted by long holiday weekends, while exports to Southeast Asian nations also remained low." In fact,... while Korea's overall exports dropped one percent last month from a year earlier,... the average daily export volume ROSE six percent to around 2-point-2 billion U.S. dollars -- the second-highest level in history. Looking forward, experts also say it's likely that the Korean economy will remain on the track to recovery thanks to the U.S. economy,... which has a huge effect on the nation's exports. "Although the first quarter growth in the United States was held back by an unusually cold winter, recent employment and consumption data are showing a firm upward trend." The nation's output data was not all negative. Service sector production rose zero-point-6 percent in May from a month ago,... after declining more than one percent in April. Retail sales also rose one-and-a-half percent -- a sign that the economy might be out of the sluggish private spending trap brought on buy the deadly ferry disaster. "Although it added that more research is needed,... the statistics agency said... the Korean economy hit a low point sometime in late 2012 or early 2013... and based on that analysis,... the economy should now be on a rebound trend. It provides an enthralling and unique behind the scenes view of a country which rarely allows outsiders to see inside. Two million troops still face each other along the border between North and South Korea. 'We have enough troops and military hardware to withstand a strike from the South and to win'. Huge billboards and loudspeakers shout invective at the other side. The cruel ferocity of the Korean war left the North scarred and in a permanent state of defensive hostility. Under thousands of umbrellas in the Pyongyang rain, North Koreans endlessly practise their parades. They are showing faith in the idea of Juche, created by Kim Il- Sung. Juche means to rely on your own strength. Kim's son Kim Jong-Il succeeded him and has continued with his father's bizarre philosophies. All Koreans must take part in the colourful ceremonies which have come to define this country in foreign eyes. Every walk of life is invaded by Songun, or military orientated doctrine. At a nursery school a special syllabus imparts the spirit of survival, with constant reference to their leader. Some may progress to Man Gjun De Military School, the most elite in Pyongyang. The school turns out some of the most committed officers in the world, ready to 'strike back at anyone who attacks our country'. Half of North Korea's budget goes on military spending. It turns a handsome profit (reputedly half a billion dollars annually) exporting missiles to the Middle East. Life in Pyongyang struggles to emerge from the shadows of the great granite monoliths. Only with hidden cameras is it possible to see inside supermarkets for ordinary Koreans; 'why would you want to go in there'; the guide insistently demands to every request. Worker brigades march to work, spade in hand, glorifying their leader in song. In local stores, each person is allotted goods in a strictly controlled system: shoes, a suit, a lamp. Though the poster on the wall reads; 'We support our dear leader in producing soy milk!', the bags on the floor read UNICEF. North Korea is fed mainly by foreign humanitarian aid, a million tonnes of it each year. Citizens supplement their daily food intake by fishing in the Taedong River. In the 1990's North Koreans were starving. Today, even in the countryside, they have food. They can grow crops in their small gardens to sell at market, unofficially (it does not reflect the ideals of Juche but has quietly been allowed to develop to avoid the starvation prevalent in the 90's). But there is no escaping the ever present State: even in the fields loudspeakers call for the populace to be ready to fight and every family is called on to prepare their children for the army. During a very unusual - for a foreigner - visit to ordinary Korean homes, we find a basic but secure existence -- home grown vegetables and fish from the river stock the fridge. They might appear to have the basic essentials but the family clearly remains in the same state of denial as everyone else in this odd country. Koreas end Kaesong talks with no concrete agreement

The two Koreas failed to make much progress during talks Thursday on ways to improve the passage system and Internet services at their jointly-run Kaesong Industrial Complex. Hwang Sung-hee reports. For the first time in six months, officials from the two Koreas met on Thursday, to discuss matters related to their jointly-run Kaesong Industrial Complex. But the meeting ended without concrete results. Key issues put forth by South Korea included the installment of Internet services and the implementation of an electronic entry system to allow South Korean workers to commute freely in and out of the complex. However, North Korea wanted to discuss matters related to the wages of North Korean workers. "We could not reach a conclusion on any special issue and had different agendas in mind. But we each clearly expressed our stances." South Korea proposed to hold their next meeting in August, but the North did not give a clear answer. The quarterly meeting of the joint committee of the business park has been at a standstill since December last year, when inter-Korean relations soured following military drills between Seoul and Washington. With some 50-thousand North Koreans working for more than 1-hundred-20 South Korean factories, the Kaesong complex is seen as the last remaining symbol of inter-Korean cooperation. Last year, the factory zone sat idle for five months after North Korea unilaterally closed it down amid escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula. Some had taken Thursday's talks as a sign of thawing inter-Korean ties, but it seems conditions on the peninsula will remain icy for now. Hwang Sung-hee, Arirang News.

Korea's minimum wage is about to go up,... although not by as much as labor groups had hoped. A government committee on Friday... passed a bill on raising the minimum hourly wage to 5-thousand-580 Korean won,... or about five-and-a-half U.S. dollars,... starting next year. That's up some seven percent from the current level. Labor representatives had been asking for a hike to about 6-dollars and 60 cents,... which would have been a 27 percent increase, citing economic growth and inflation. But, representatives of employers had said that a further hike would put a bigger burden small and mid-sized companies.

The following recommendation for the top things to do in South Korea: 1) Visiting Insadong Considered by many to the cultural hub of Seoul, Insadong is the perfect place to indulge in Korean street, go shopping and take in Korean traditional musical performances. It is also one of the best places for people watching as you'll notice a mix of both Koreans and foreigners. 2) Korean Folk Village The Korean Folk Village, nestled in between the cities of Suwon and Yongin, is a place you'll definitely want to check out. While wandering around he scenic premises you can snack on Korean street food delights such as sugary taffy where you'll notice traditional Korean wedding ceremonies, tightrope walking and equestrian students and performances. The best time of year to come is in the fall or spring. 3) Cat Cafes Although we've been to several cat cafes in Thailand, Malaysia and Germany we still haven't found one that tops the cat cafe we visited in Hongdae, Seoul, South Korea. Purchase an entrance ticket, which entitles you to a drink, allows you to come in and interact with the cats playing, feeding and petting them to your hearts content. 4) One of the most historic markets in all of Seoul - and Korea for that matter - is Namdaemun Market. As the largest and oldest open air market in all of Korea you'll have a chance to shop and eat Korean street food all day long. My favorite snack here is hotteok. 5) A scenic and peaceful way to experience the heart of downtown Seoul is to wander along the Cheonggyecheon. There are few places that are more attractive to go walking. When we visited in winter we noticed many ice sculptures. 6) To beat the heat in the winter, visit a traditional Korean tea house for a fragrant cup of hot fruity tea and a delicious plate of Korean rice cake snacks. 7) Not a fan of cats? Try visiting a dog cafe as an alternative. It's the same deal as the cat cafe in terms of purchasing overpriced drinks for the chance to play and interact with cute dogs and puppies. 8) Kimbap Restaurant For excellent Korean rice rolls, known as kimbap, head to one of the ubiquitous locations for some excellent kimchi fried rice, mandu and Korean soups. 9) Bamboo Park If you visit the city of Damyang, in the southern region of Korea, you'll be treated to the Damyang Bamboo Forest Park. A nice scenic escape from urban Korean life, these parks do sometimes get crowded. 10) Boseong Tea Fields and Plantation Not far from the Bamboo Forest Park is the Boseong Tea Fields. Come climb up to the very top - it's quite the workout and enjoy a cup of green tea or green tea flavored ice cream upon returning to the bottom. 11) There are a plethora of fascinating palaces and temples to explore in Seoul. Our favorite, is Gyeongbokgung Palace where admission is only 3000 Won. Pose with Korean guards and stick around for the changing of the guard. 12) If you're ready to shop until you drop be sure to visit Myeongdong, one of the most popular shopping districts in all of Seoul. Here you'll find swanky boutique shops and plenty of restaurants. 13) For the art and hipster scene be sure to visit Hongdae, the most popular student hangout area for Koreans. From food to nightlife to shopping this place has it all for young 20 somethings. 14) An alternative to Itaewon is Songtan - located nearby an American Military base in the Pyeongtaek region. This is where you'll come to buy American goods and to eat International cuisine. 15) Seoul Tower offers amazing views of the city but I enjoyed climbing Namsan even more. Seoul is one of the most dynamic cities in the world. I've been privileged enough to have lived in and around the Seoul metropolitan area for several years as an English teacher. It's a city that is near and dear to my heart and one which I strongly encourage you to visit. Below is my things to do in Seoul travel guide featuring all of the top attractions worth visiting: 1) Insadong is the cultural HUB of Seoul. It's an area that is equally as popular with locals as it is with tourists. Whether you're shopping for Korean souvenirs, people watching or wanting to grab some Korean street food, you'll find it all here. 2) Do fancy cats? For cat lovers (and the cats living there) a cat cafe is paradise. With an opportunity to interact with cats and feed them treats, you'll be sure to make a few feline friends in just one sitting. The deal with these cat cafes is that you have to purchase a prepaid drink and/or snack (at a price higher than a normal cafe) for the opportunity to pet and play with kitties. Our favorite cat cafe was located in Hongdae. 3) In the winter Korea is frigid in a way few from abroad might expect. To warm up head to a proper Korean Tea House where you'll be served a wonderful aromatic fruity Korean tea accompanied by rice cake snacks. To enjoy like a local find a spot with Ondol - heated floors. If you're looking for a recommendation, try the ginger tea! 4) For the best view in Seoul consider hiking up Mount Namsan to visit Seoul Tower. Best done in the spring or fall - given the moderate temperatures - this moderately challenging walk will take less than an hour to complete. We picked late fall to go when it was cooler outside and leaves were changing colors. 5) No trip to Seoul would be complete without visiting the oldest market in the city - Namdaemun market. Many come here to shop but I'm all about coming for Korean street food. With a plethora of stalls and no shortage of options it's best to arrive with an empty stomach. If you're having a hard time choosing I recommend Hotteok and Tteokbokki. 6) As if visiting a cat cafe wasn't enough there are also dog cafes in Seoul! Unlike the cat cafes, which are a bit more mellow, prepare for a high energy kind of environment in the dog cafe where the dogs are more active than the docile cats. 7) For the best walk in Seoul head down to the Cheonggyecheon stream in the heart of the city. Equally as fascinating during the summer as it is by winter, it takes on a totally different personality as the seasons change. If you're lucky you'll spot a traditional Korean performance or hear Korean music playing. 8) There are numerous palaces to consider visiting in Seoul but none is more impressive than Gyeongbokgung. With admission being only 3000 KRW it's a cheap and fun landmark to visit. South Korea Travel Video Guide: South Korea, formally the Republic of Korea is a country in East Asia. South Korea occupies the southern half of the Korean Peninsula, with North Korea to the north, China across the sea to the west and Japan a short ferry ride to the southeast. Archeological finds of prehistoric toolmaking on the Korean Peninsula date back to 70,000 BC, and the first pottery is found around 8000 BC. Comb-pattern pottery culture peaked around 3500-2000 BC. Legend has it that Korea began with the founding of Gojoseon (also called Ancient Chosun) by the legendary Dangun in 2333 BC. Archeological and contemporaneous written records of Gojoseon as a kingdom date back to around 7th-4th century BC. Gojoseon was eventually defeated by the Chinese Han Dynasty and its territories were governed by four Chinese commanderies. The political chaos following the fall of the Han Dynasty in China allowed native tribes to regain control of Korea and led to the emergence of the Three Kingdoms of Korea, namely Goguryeo, Silla and Baekje. Despite repeated attempts by China, namely the Sui Dynasty and later the Tang Dynasty, to conquer the Korean Peninsula, northern-based Goguryeo managed to repel them. Eventually, Goguryeo fell to a Silla-Tang alliance, which had earlier defeated Baekje. This unified Korea under the Silla dynasty. Even though Tang later invaded, Silla forces managed to drive them out, thus maintaining Korea's independence. Unified Silla was replaced by the Goryeo (also called Koryo) dynasty, from which the modern name "Korea" derives. One highlight of the Goryeo dynasty was that in 1234 the world's first metal movable type was invented by a Korean named Choe Yun-ui (200 years before Gutenberg's printing press). Goryeo was replaced by the Joseon (also called Chosun) dynasty, after a coup by one of its generals. The Joseon dynasty ruled Korea from 1392 to 1910, being one of the longest actively ruling dynasties in world history. It was during the early part of the Joseon dynasty that Korean technological inventions such as the world's first water clock, ironclad ship, and other innovations took place. During the rule of King Sejong the Great, the world's first rain gauge was invented and the Korean alphabet known as hangul was created.
