Theorizing Play
http://thebrooklyninstitute.com/bisr_course/theorizing-play/ In 1938, the Dutch scholar Johan Huizinga set forth an ambitious argument in Homo Ludens ("Playing Man") that culture arises in and as play. The French sociologist Roger Caillois responded to this foundational text of play studies twenty years later with his own seminal work, Les Jeux et Les Hommes (translated loosely as "Man, Play and Games"). A member of the Collège de Sociologie circle in Paris—alongside such figures as Alexandre Kojève, Walter Benjamin, Georges Bataille, and André Breton—Caillois sought to provide a corrective to Huizinga's account with a fourfold typology of play as agôn or competition; alea or chance; mimicry or simulation; and ilinx or vertigo. (Notably, one of Caillois's chief criticisms of Huizinga was that he overlooked gambling.) In this class, we will explore these and other definitions in order to address some of the vast array of activities that seem to fall under the concept "play." From the roll of the dice to the role of games in economic modeling, from the avatars of Vishnu to the avatars of videogames, we will ask how play mediates value, meaning, sacrality, and even biological being in the contemporary world. How does play relate to the evolution of animals, the development of children, and the expression of cultures? Does play have an ethical significance? playforBuenosAires un proyecto experimental de performance jugado en un lugar playforPLACE es un proyecto itinerante de performance, donde la coreógrafa griega Sofia Mavragani explora el potencial performativo del juego. Inspirada en el historiador Holandés Johan Huizinga y su filosofía en el Homo Ludens, Sofia desarrolla una serie de talleres de performance y estructuras de juego in-situ que consideran el rol de lo lúdico crucial en una cultura y sociedad. En cada localidad visitada, Sofia Mavragani, crea junto a un artista local un taller experimental único/un proceso basado en la enseñanza colectiva y en el intercambio vívido. El objetivo e investigar el potencial performático del acto de jugar y su potencial inherente de transformar la realidad en lo imaginario, lo serio en divertido y la actual locación en un imprevisto. llll Características del taller llll Aplicar las características del ljuego a las fases de investigación y creación. Explorar material de movimiento innovador basado en los atributos del cuerpo lúdico. Investigar cómo las estructuras de los juegos pueden funcionar como estructuras performáticas. Estimular ideas personales y desafiar las estrategias de composición dinámica. Estimular la creatividad y la imaginación. Desarrollar habilidades físicas y performáticas dadas por las diversidad de participantes y el intercambio de prácticas. Proveer respuestas prácticas al potencial de la colaboración entre distintas personas que comparten interés en común y el modo en que la colaboración en base al juego conlleva a un resultado performático más efectivo. playforPLACE está interesado en jugar con las dinámicas de grupos de personas variadas.
