NJS is a fusion genre that was highly popular starting in the late-1980s and continuing through the early-1990s. Specifically, NJS is R&B; fused with synths and electronic drums, most notably the grandfather of drum machines, the Roland 808. You won't hear any auto-tune. You will hear vocalists that don't have perfect pitch, and there's an underlying integrity to the lyrics and delivery. The pioneers of NJS were Teddy Riley and Bernard Belle, and the actual term "new jack swing" was coined in a 1988 profile of Riley. Riley spearheaded the NJS sound as a member of both Guy and Blackstreet. He also produced Keith Sweat, Johnny Kemp, Bobby Brown, Big Daddy Kane, Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson, Wreckx-N-Effect, Snoop Dogg, Lady Gaga and many more. Inspiration & Obsession When I wrote my first New Jack Swing remix last year I had no idea it would lead me to where I am today. I just knew that I loved Keith Sweat. I grew up listening to him, worked out to his jams with friends and family, and sang his songs (very poorly) with my brother at karaoke. I even proposed to my wife on stage at one of his concerts in Oakland, CA. After finishing my first two Sweat remixes - "Don't Stop Your Love" and "I Want Her" - I felt like I had stumbled upon something special. I became re-obsessed with NJS., listening to all the old tracks I could get my hands on and scouring the internet for a-cappella versions to remix. I wanted to bring back the Jams we all love and update them for today. Shortly before this NJS obsession set in, I had started producing dance music as Menage a Moi and founded the boutique dance music record label 3am Devices with my long time friend and fellow music fanatic, Andy Kershaw. As a result, I kept imagining all my favorite NJS swing songs remixed as Deep House (and later G-House) dance songs. That four on the floor beat and in-the-pocket swing were the perfect counterparts to lift up the R&B; vocals. I fortuitously came across the Dave Smith Tempest, an analog drum machine created in 2012 with the soul of 1989. It was the perfect tool for the job. With my drum machine in hand, I attempted to create an album of Deep House and House remixes of some of my favorite New Jack Swing songs from my childhood.
