Cloning Wild Life: zoos, captivity, and the future of endangered animals
Cloning Wild Life: zoos, captivity, and the future of endangered animals
The natural world is marked by an ever-increasing loss of varied habitats, species extinctions, and new kinds of dilemmas posed by global warming. At the same time, humans are working to actively shape this natural world through contemporary bioscience and biotechnology, as humans seek scientific solutions to environmental crisis. Cloned endangered animals in zoos sit at the apex of these trends. In her new book Carrie Friese argues that cloning technologies significantly affect our conceptualizations of and engagements with wildlife and nature. Carrie Friese is associate professor of sociology at LSE.- published: 22 Nov 2013

Are We Finally Ready To Clone A Mammoth?
Are We Finally Ready To Clone A Mammoth?
Everyone keeps asking scientists when they're going to clone a woolly mammoth. It's not the easiest thing to do, but they are working on it! Trace is here to discuss with you how we're planning on bringing back extinct animals, and how recent discoveries are helping this process. Read More: Despite Mammoth Blood, Cloning Still Unlikely http://news.discovery.com/animals/dinosaurs/despite-mammoth-blood-cloning-unlikely-130602.htm "Despite the recent discovery of a stunningly preserved mammoth, the odds of scientists using it to clone a real-life mammoth anytime soon are still low, experts say." The Mammoth Cometh http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/02/magazine/the-mammoth-cometh.html?_r=2&module;=ArrowsNav&contentCollection;=Magazine&action;=keypress®ion;=FixedLeft&pgtype;=article http://www.sfgate.com/news/science/article/Mammoth-tusk-lifted-from-Seattle-construction-pit-5235927.php "Bringing extinct animals back to life is really happening - and it's going to be very, very cool. Unless it ends up being very, very bad." De-extinction: Mammoth prospect, or just woolly? http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-23602142 "Some scientists are now seriously considering the possibility of bringing back extinct animals. But can it be done, and if so, what would be the use?" Sequencing the Nuclear Genome of the Extinct Woolly Mammoth http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v456/n7220/abs/nature07446.html "In 1994, two independent groups extracted DNA from several Pleistocene epoch mammoths and noted differences among individual specimens." Cloning a Mammoth http://genetics.thetech.org/original_news/news103 "The possibility of bringing extinct animals back to life has fascinated people for years. While something like Jurassic Park is unlikely, Pleistocene Park just got one step closer to becoming a reality. One day, mammoths may walk the Earth again." Why Clone? http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/cloning/whyclone/ "Our experiences have told us that, with a little work, we humans can clone just about anything we want, from frogs to sheep—and probably even ourselves." Species Revival: Should We Bring Back Extinct Animals? http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2013/03/130305-science-animals-extinct-species-revival-deextinction-debate-tedx/ "The Tasmanian tiger—known as a thylacine—is one of many exinct species at the center of the de-extinction debate."
