Ravenna april 11, 1512, France Italian Wars, Gaston De Fiox's Demise
Ravenna april 11, 1512, France Italian Wars, Gaston De Fiox's Demise
Ravenna april 11, 1512, France Italian Wars, Gaston De Fiox's confronted "The Holy League "created by Pope Julius ll, in 1511 to prevent the French from gaining power in Italy. Armed with landsknechte's superb German Pike Light Infantry., French Knights Superbly Armored., Gaston De Fiox Superb Tactician Leader Aristocrat, perfect French leader. Vs the Spanish faith and will to defend the church and its personal interest aboard. The Spanish having great might of will, and good tactics above most army's of its times still suffered the limitations that any foe felt while dealing with French mounted nobles that out number you the opponent by 20%. None the lest the Spanish relied on great leadership, and its hardened veterans who'd repelled the French many occasions before in far crueler quarters. The aim of the Spanish was to build a defensive counter offensive strategy, something the Spanish had been working on throughout its existence in la Reconquista of Spain it self. Being separated from the mainland of Europe it has always stayed firm as Iberian culture customs fortitude and ways of waging war and managing the diverse personality's of the different region in Iberia, make Spain a perfect place to learn strategy's of useful war tactics that in the most part succeed against all other opponents faced through out its existence. Earning great respect from the roman empire for this fierce but steady way of keeping its full grip at bay, and instead making Rome do more trade and commerce rather then subjecting. Later Hispania her self would be an independent roman sect as Rome and Byzantium was until Constantine ruler of Britain in Gaul ( a Western European) Invaded Italy and united the entire empire under him self being the first Christian Emperor in October 28 312 ad. The thing about the German Mercenaries( Landsknechte's ) that made them so deadly is that they knew about the enemies tactics. As bloody mercenaries they had ambitions of wealth, and that wealth game through selling their services to the highest bidders, and usually the highest bidders had superb tactics that they would pass on to these mercenaries. The other thing the hosting army would pass along was their weakness as well to these mercenaries. When they were on the opposing side for example they would use this knowledge and appear invincible, by attacking at the right moments, making their weapons suited for the occasions. They knew how the enemy worked ration and thought right down to the moves they were going to make. For this particular reason hosting armies as well created their own tactics. This behavior was not born in the landsknechte's bit is in all mercenaries, but it was the Swiss pike units were this was born the Swiss being a people with great skill in their weapons. In the early years mainly fighting for their sovereignty, they came to be respected for their fierceness in battle, but also their valuable tactics learned as freemen. The German mercenaries were the result of the Swiss growing power and prowess on the battle field, personally I call both along with the Tercio's the aristocracy's worst nightmare, as affording a good horse meant you needed a good casket too. The Landsknechte's weapons was the was the pikes halberd and a unique double handed long sword that made these men super lethal against units trying to break up the pike formations they fought depended on. Like the Swiss in the later soldiers and captains developed their own tactics, like the landsknechte's schiltron of pikes and arquebusiers made them very powerful opponent's on the battle field. The Spanish soldiers had a handful to deal with this when it came to this particular lot. But none of it was in vain, as Gaston De Fiox was killed in the simple pursuit of the reaming 7.000 thousand Spanish, The Spanish did not surrender and they made what was a tactical retreat so that they may fight another day time.
