GoPro: South African Orphanage
In the fall of 2012, my brother skipped his flight home from his 2 week trip to Cape Town to stay and help an orphanage in a local township. In the two years since, I have made a few trips to work with him and the kids, who have become like family. This is a video of my first time seeing them after 6 months apart. Are poor white South Africans being left behind?
Are poor white South Africans being left behind?
Poor Whites - South Africa - Some poor white South Africans feel they are being unfairly treated by government policies, which they say favour black people for jobs. For downloads and more information visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/56391/short-films/poor-whites.html Since the end of apartheid, thousands of white South Africans have been forced into poverty. They blame the government's positive discrimination policies, which favour black employees. Twelve years ago, Afrikaners like Betsie Dreyer lived a privileged and cocooned life. Now, many are dependent on charity handouts. "We are fighting all the time to survive." The government is determined to see the workforce appropriately reflect the population. It gives black people priority in employment, sets 'black quotas' for businesses and favours companies owned by black people. But critics accuse the government of neglecting its responsibility to white citizens. As union rep Kallie Kriel states: "It's ironic that a government that fought racial laws is now doing exactly the same thing." Produced by ABC Australia. A Place in the City: Inside the struggle of South Africa's post-apartheid shackdwellers For downloads and more information visit: http://journeyman.tv/59335/short-films/a-place-in-the-city.html More than a decade after apartheid ended millions of South Africans still live in basic home-made shacks. We hear from the inhabitants as they eloquently argue their case for real citizenship rights. The shack dwellers movement, Abahlali baseMjondolo, began in 2005. Their slogan is 'Talk to us, not about us.' 'It's not that people like to live in shacks. No one will ever want to live in these conditions but they need to be close to their work' explains S'bu Zikode, Abahlali's elected leader. However, the group has not been welcomed by the ANC. They've been met with aggression rather than with negotiations. Police shot Mariet Kikine with six rubber bullets at a peaceful demonstration. 'I'm not stopping to fight the government for my rights. Now they've made me brave.' In the build-up to the 2010 soccer World Cup, Durban shack dwellers fear they will be bulldozed out of the city, or arrested. 'This new legislation makes it a crime to build shacks or resist demolition and eviction.' But the shack dwellers are determined not to give up. Apartheid in South Africa Laws, History: Documentary Film - Raw Footage (1957)
Apartheid in South Africa Laws, History: Documentary Film - Raw Footage (1957)
Apartheid (lit. "aparthood") (pronounced [uh-pahrt-heyt, [uh-pahr-hahyt]) is an Afrikaans word for a system of racial segregation enforced through legislation by the National Party governments, who were the ruling party from 1948 to 1994, of South Africa, under which the rights of the majority black inhabitants of South Africa were curtailed and white supremacy and Afrikaner minority rule was maintained. Apartheid was developed after World War II by the Afrikaner-dominated National Party and Broederbond organizations and was practiced also in South West Africa, which was administered by South Africa under a League of Nations mandate (revoked in 1966 via United Nations Resolution 2145), until it gained independence as Namibia in 1990. Racial segregation in South Africa began in colonial times under Dutch[4] and British rule. However, apartheid as an official policy was introduced following the general election of 1948. New legislation classified inhabitants into four racial groups ("native", "white", "coloured", and "Asian"),[5] and residential areas were segregated, sometimes by means of forced removals. Non-white political representation was completely abolished in 1970, and starting in that year black people were deprived of their citizenship, legally becoming citizens of one of ten tribally based self-governing homelands called bantustans, four of which became nominally independent states. The government segregated education, medical care, beaches, and other public services, and provided black people with services inferior to those of white people.[6] Apartheid sparked significant internal resistance and violence as well as a long arms and trade embargo against South Africa.[7] Since the 1950s, a series of popular uprisings and protests were met with the banning of opposition and imprisoning of anti-apartheid leaders. As unrest spread and became more effective and militarized, state organisations responded with repression and violence. Reforms to apartheid in the 1980s failed to quell the mounting opposition, and in 1990 President Frederik Willem de Klerk began negotiations to end apartheid,[8] culminating in multi-racial democratic elections in 1994, which were won by the African National Congress under Nelson Mandela. The vestiges of apartheid still shape South African politics and society. Although the official abolishment of Apartheid occurred in 1990 with repeal of the last of the remaining Apartheid laws, the end of Apartheid is widely regarded as arising from the 1994 democratic general elections being held. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apartheid_in_South_Africa- published: 15 Aug 2012
