An elderly veterinary assistant in a small Ukrainian town, Grinia, married to Natalia (he calls 'the old woman'), leaves his isba which has been destroyed by fire. The old couple choose to go to Siberia and move in with their daughter Nina rather than to settle down in Caucasus with their more balanced son. They are welcomed by Ivan, their son-in-law, a man ravaged by alcohol that his wife has left to live with a married man. Grinia and Natalia stay mainly to bring up Irena, their granddaughter. They soon become friends with the local miners and help Ivan get his feet back on the ground. The reformed drunkard falls in love with Galya, his young neighbor but, to his distress, Nina reappears, broken but cynical, after being dumped by her lover. Her parents side with Ivan and kick her out of home...

We travel to Saraqib where foreign Islamists control checkpoints and the courts. They even check meat deliveries to the town to see they're fit for Muslim consumption. Inside the Sharia court we hear the case of four would-be thieves caught trying to steal a car. They are sentenced to public flogging. But they're lucky not to receive sentences of amputation or even death. Sharia judge Sheikh Abdullah explains that punishments are reduced during wartime. The Islamists' Jordanian commander here Abu Qudama says "I thank the West for not intervening in Syria. This has helped to revive religion in the hearts of the people". But others want the foreigners to leave and a brave few protest against the flogging and the courts. Legion fury at 'despicable' attack on murdered soldiers' memorial

A memorial to three soldiers murdered by the IRA has been attacked for the 12th time since it was erected five years ago. Paint was thrown over the stone monument which commemorates the young fusiliers from Scotland, who died in 1971. Police are treating the attack on the memorial, at White Brae in Ligoniel, north Belfast, as a sectarian hate crime ...
