My neighbour, my enemy: The Lebanese fight against sectarian ethnic cleansing Subscribe to journeyman for more: http://www.youtube.com/journeymanpictures For downloads and more information visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/uploader/?page=preview&id;=67446 Welcome to the frontline of sectarian warfare: Tripoli, North Lebanon. In Jabal Mohsen and Bab al Tabbaneh, violent clashes between Alawite and Sunni neighbours erupt every few weeks. These two slum communities have been slugging it out since the 1970s. Neither has the energy or will to escape the futile, bloody conflict that has come to define them both. A mother of two would rather hide her children in darkness than flee the city: "Even if they enter our houses, we will slaughter them, kill them: it's either us or them". Abu Rami is one of the 50,000 people crammed onto the hilltop called Jabal Muhsin. "My enemy and their enemy is hunger, poverty and ignorance. My enemy is not the guns they hold and fire at me". So says this war-weary veteran they call 'the living martyr', thirty-five years a militia leader - a gunman since his teens. Down below in the predominantly Sunni district of Bab al Tabbaneh, Salafist preacher and father Sheikh Bilal al-Masri is trigger-happy and eager for a fight."I've only witnessed death and killings, jail, torture, displacement, rape looting" he says of the Syrian regime. As the conflict seems to pass on from each generation, the population can only hope for a common solution to emerge from the carnage. The ISIS War in Iraq Has Roots Much Deeper Than Sectarian Violence | Mnar Muhawesh Interview
Viewer support keeps the show going: http://www.Patreon.com/AcronymTV Joining Dennis on the show today to make sense of all this is Mnar Muhawesh. She is the founder, CEO and editor in chief of Mint Press News, and also a regular speaker on responsible journalism, sexism, neoconservativism within the media and journalism start-ups. Episode breakdown| As the world watches Iraq quickly descending into a failed state status under the brutal onslaught from fighters in the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, pundits, representatives form congress and no doubt members of Barack Obama's inner circle are wondering if it is not time to put together another coalition of the willing and re-engage the US Military in Iraq. Before you dust off your yellow ribbons to tie round your oak tree's though, remember: in 2003 The United States invaded Iraq after lying to the world and the American people saying that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction and was connected to Al Qaeda- and therefore connected to the 9/11 attacks. All lies. Now, as Gary Grappo writes: "Iraq is collapsing. The Middle Eastern nation, where nearly 4,500 American lives were lost and nearly one billion dollars were spent from 2003-2011 to oust a dictator and rebuild a nation, is approaching chaos, perhaps even "failed state" status." The deterioration in Syria and the invasion and spread of extremism in northern and western Iraq is putting the "cradle of civilization" under the control of the Middle East's most militant, ruthless and vile Islamic extremists. They proffer no future for the region's inhabitants other than oppression under the guise of rigid adherence to Sharia law. Extremist fighters from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) — expelled from Al Qaida because of its extreme militancy — have seized Iraq's second largest city of Mosul and took possession of Ninewah Province, after taking Fallujah and Ramadi just west of Baghdad late last year. They quickly moved south to Samarra and Tikrit, capturing both cities with little government resistance. They also seized Iraq's largest oil refinery in Baiji. The militants have made no secret of their objective: Baghdad." The Bitter Sectarian Battle For Control Of Syria's Courts
Battle for Syria's Courts (2013):The escalating struggle for control of Syria's legal system between moderate revolutionaries and Islamists linked to al-Qaeda. For downloads and more information visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=66957&bid;=2 The uprising against Syria's President Bashir Al-Assad sparked a bloody civil war but three years on, the opposition is now at war with itself. There is an escalating struggle between moderates and Islamists linked to al-Qaeda. The Islamists want Sharia justice and in some parts of Syria they're getting their way. We travel to Saraqib where foreign Islamists control checkpoints and the courts. They even check meat deliveries to the town to see they're fit for Muslim consumption. Inside the Sharia court we hear the case of four would-be thieves caught trying to steal a car. They are sentenced to public flogging. But they're lucky not to receive sentences of amputation or even death. Sharia judge Sheikh Abdullah explains that punishments are reduced during wartime. The Islamists' Jordanian commander here Abu Qudama says "I thank the West for not intervening in Syria. This has helped to revive religion in the hearts of the people". But others want the foreigners to leave and a brave few protest against the flogging and the courts. One explains his opposition to the Islamists: "In Islam I see smiles, tolerance, love, good deeds, helping others, justice and everything that's beautiful. But they see death and blood." Roshan Muhammed Salih interviews Shaykh Yasir Qadhi, one of the most prominent Sunni Muslim preachers in the West. For the very first time Dr Qadhi gives detailed explanations about his previously harsh rhetoric towards Shias and explains why he has changed his position. He talks about the wider sectarian tension within the Muslim community and the role of politics in fomenting that tension.
