Death Row Records was a record label founded in 1991 by Marion "Suge" Knight Jr. and Andre Young (Dr. Dre). It was the record label of many popular West Coast hip hop artists such as 2Pac, Snoop Doggy Dogg, Dr. Dre, Nate Dogg and rap group Tha Dogg Pound consisting of rappers Kurupt and Daz Dillinger also Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes of TLC although most departed from the label after its demise following the murder of Tupac Shakur in 1996.
The collapse of Death Row Records meant its title as a powerful hip-hop label was subsequently revoked[citation needed] despite attempts from the last remaining founder and CEO at the time, Suge Knight, that included signing new talents and releasing many compilations of previously unreleased content recorded by ex-Death Row artists. The label filed for bankruptcy in 2006 and on January 15, 2009, Death Row Records was successfully auctioned to entertainment development company WIDEawake Entertainment Group, Inc. for $18 million.
Death Row has sold nearly 50 million albums worldwide, and generated close to $750 million in revenue.
Death row signifies the place, often a section of a prison, that houses individuals awaiting execution. The term is also used figuratively to describe the state of awaiting execution ("being on death row"), even in places where no special facility or separate unit for condemned inmates exists. After individuals are found guilty of an offense and sentenced to death, they remain on death row during appeal and habeas corpus procedures, and if those are unsuccessful, until execution. Due to the complex, expensive, and time-consuming appeals procedures mandated in some jurisdictions, e.g. the United States, before an execution can be carried out, prisoners may wait years before execution; the time between sentencing and execution has increased relatively steadily between 1977 and 2010, including a 22% jump between 1989 and 1990 and a similar jump between 2008 and 2009. In 2010, a death row inmate waited an average of 178 months (or close to 15 years) between sentencing and execution. Nearly a quarter of deaths on death row in the U.S. are due to natural causes.
Andre Romelle Young (born February 18, 1965), better known by his stage name Dr. Dre, is an American rapper, record producer, record executive, entrepreneur, and occasional actor. He is the founder and current CEO of Aftermath Entertainment and a former co-owner and artist of Death Row Records. He has produced albums for and overseen the careers of many rappers, including Snoop Dogg, Eminem, 50 Cent and Game. As a producer he is credited as a key figure in the popularization of West Coast G-funk, a style of rap music characterized as synthesizer-based with slow, heavy beats. As of 2011, Dr. Dre is ranked as the third richest figure in the American hip hop scene by Forbes with a net worth of $250 million.
Dre began his career in music as a member of the World Class Wreckin' Cru and he later found fame with the influential gangsta rap group N.W.A with Eazy-E, Ice Cube, MC Ren, and DJ Yella which popularized the use of explicit lyrics in rap to detail the violence of street life. His 1992 solo debut, The Chronic, released under Death Row Records, led him to become one of the best-selling American performing artists of 1993 and to win a Grammy Award for the single "Let Me Ride". In 1996, he left Death Row to establish his own label, Aftermath Entertainment. Under that label, he produced a compilation album titled Dr. Dre Presents the Aftermath in 1996, and released a solo album titled 2001 in 1999, for which he won the Grammy producer's award the next year.
Marion "Suge" Knight, Jr. ( /ˈʃʊɡ/; born April 19, 1965) (a.k.a. Big Suge or Big Simon) is the founder and CEO of Black Kapital Records and co-founder and former CEO of Death Row Records. Death Row Records rose to dominate the rap charts after Dr. Dre's breakthrough album The Chronic in 1992. After several years of chart successes for artists including Tupac Shakur, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Outlawz, and Tha Dogg Pound, Death Row Records stagnated after Knight's incarceration on parole violation charges in September 1996.
Marion Hugh Knight was born in Compton, California. His name, Suge, derives from "Sugar Bear", a childhood nickname. He attended Lynwood High School, then graduated and got a football scholarship to University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he went and played football for several years. After school, he played professionally for the Los Angeles Rams as a replacement player during the 1987 NFL strike. Later, he found work as a concert promoter and a bodyguard for celebrities including Bobby Brown.
Here I am, oh my time's rolling slowly by
21 years old, waiting on my turn to die
Every minute Lord, every minute seems like five
And if it wasn't for the window,
I'd wonder if the world outside was alive
Yeah, smokin cigarettes, drinkin' coffee
And waiting on my last meal, I try to pretend
I try to pretend but this cell is much too real
Oh, I should have left that chick alone
I curse the day, I curse the day she was born, now
Oh the old men they tell me
They tell me love is akin to hate
But before I die, I just gotta get it straight now
Crush out my cigarette, throw away my coffee and scream
Ahhhhhhh, I don't wanna die
Oh, I don't wanna die
Oh, it's too late they'll be comin' for me soon
It's too late to pray, and anyway, God can't see this room
I'm startin' to sweat now, It won't be long now
I can see
They're gonna put me in that chair
They're gonna put me in that chair and that's how the end's gonna be
Yeah, it's gettin cold, it's gettin colder
And I'm startin' to scream, Ahh I don't wanna die
Let me out
Sorry son
Commit a crime - pay the price
Death row - What's that - 'No stay?'
Oh! Ok I'll tell him
Dead man walking
We've all been detained
For the crimes we've committed
They stayed execution
But we'll never get acquitted
Waiting for the day when they strap us in
And when they pull the lever
Hear the goddamn screams
Shake with fear
Electric chair
We're all inside
Homocide related
They'll show no mercy
But we don't anticipate it
We move a little closer
Every day to meet our maker
They cover up our face
And then they close the circuit breaker
Oh! No!
Shake with fear
Your time draws near
Oh! No! - I won't go
You'll never get me down to
Death row
Oh come on man
Give me a break
I made one mistake, that's all it takes
I ain't that bad
I ain't done nothing wrong
Shake with fear
The end is near
Oh! No! - I won't go
You'll never get me down to
Death row
Oh! No! - They're taking me slow
One way ticket to death row
So what's the matter son
Too young to die
Take it like a man
Don't cry Ah! Ah!
Ahh!
Oh! No! - I won't go
You'll never get me down to
Death row
Say a prayer, best beware
It's not very nice in the electric chair
Oh! No! - I won't go
You'll never get me down to
Death row
Oh! No! - They're taking me slow
I¹m dead meat - you took away my rights
To be a part of your society
A life-time in prison wouldn¹t justify
You wanna blow away a sucker -
so I have to die
I¹m still waiting for the final call
I wanna meet my maker -
I¹m ready to go
Kill me - kill me - kill me -
please, kill me
Give me a reason why you¹re gonna
let me wait
Some kind of punishment before
you terminate
You¹re taking my life for your
peace of mind
So let¹s go - start the show
Death row - I¹m ready to go - death row
Let me die - let me go
Death row - I¹m ready to go - death row
Let me die - let me go - death row
I¹m a dead man walking so get
outta my face
Rather die like a man than rotting
this way
I hate you and you hate me
You can come and kiss my dignity
You¹re taking my life for your
peace of mind
So let¹s go - start the show
Death row - I¹m ready to go - death row
Let me die - let me go
Death row - I¹m ready to go - death row
I¹m ready to go - death row - death row
Your justice is not mine
You punish a crime with another crime
If you need to kill me for your
peace of mind
Then let¹s go - start the show
Death row - I¹m ready to go - death row
Let me die - let me go
Death row - I¹m ready to go - death row
I¹m ready to go - death row - death row
Death row - open up Rcause here I come
Death row - knock, knock, knocking
I¹m no hero¹s son
Death row - there¹s no tears that
you can sell
Death row - paid my ticket through
the gates of hell
Death row - death row
Let me die - let me go
Alright!
Waiting your turn, Just to die
You wish that someone could be by your side
You're so afraid to be alone
You need my help so that you can be strong
And what will you miss
when death gives you a kiss
Live in a room with your solid walls
You can't get out although you call
Looking around and what you see
A thousand souls and there ready to scream
And what will you miss
when the death gives you a kiss
Such a strange moaning in the air
Can you feel the breeze through your hair
Rolling around across the ground
Hoping that soon you will be found yeah
And what will you miss
When the death gives you a kiss
Oh yeah!
The evil darkness that you can't see through
Turns you around makes a fool out of you
Looking behind you can you see the dawn
Wasted your chance and now your life is gone
(lyrics by Harry Conklin)
So you think you got it made
Standing so close to the stage
Hear the sound like a battering ram
But what you don't know
Is Jag Panzer's got control
And the power is all in our hands
Yes, as decibels raise
Your eardrums will split
Like fire from hell and the grave
With vengeance and malice
We'll yell and we'll scream
Our violence evolves from the stage
So I'll give you my body
To do what you want
I'm boiling with passionate flare
You know it's controlled
But not for very long
Take your soul with my deadly stare
Death Row
Your standing in the
Death Row
Ringing inside your head
Death Row
First seven rows
Death Row
Louder till we raise the dead
So keep raising your hands
Oh you're such loving fans
We're headbangers, one and all
I'm aiming to please
Bring you down to your knees
You've suddenly lost all control
Death Row
Your standing in the
Death Row
Ringing inside your head
Death Row
First seven rows
Death Row
A gap in iron bars lets a beam of light hit the ground.
He’s in prison in this dusty out back western town.
They know he shot a man, shot him in the head.
Laying in that pool of blood stone dead.
Yes he can hear a knocking as the gallows go up out side.
Tomorrow he’s going to have to surely die.
The gallows silhouetted by a blazing sun.
His days on this earth are how just one.
On bended knees he reaches for the mysterious G-d of love.
In the night G-d heard him calling him up above.
He wakes up on the floor by the rattle of keys.
Now the time has come and deaths at the door.
Now he is lead to slaughter his hands and feet are in chains.
Yet he knows he’s going to ride again on the plains.
The light fades from his eyes while the sun does rise.
Alright!
Waiting your turn, Just to die
You wish that someone could be by your side
You're so afraid to be alone
You need my help so that you can be strong
And what will you miss
when death gives you a kiss
Live in a room with your solid walls

The evil darkness that you can't see through

Looking behind you can you see the dawn
Wasted your chance and now your life is gone
Your life is gone yeah!
Anger! Violence! Deadly Silence! Rage is all I see
No regrets for my mistakes, there's no remorse for me
Running fast to get away the feds are getting close
I can't be caught, I will not stop! This path is what I chose
Running fast to get away, running from my yesterday
Getting caught has marked my end, sentenced to the
Death row! Sentenced to the death row!
The motherfucking death row! Sentenced to the death row!
Muscles aching! Labored breathing! Loosing all my strength
Running hard to get away and still I'm out of breath
Screaming voices in my mind have never been so loud
I can't recall the rest of it is in a bloody cloud
Strapped down to a metal seat, this can't be, I can't be beat
Getting caught has marked my end, sentenced to the
Death row! Sentenced to the death row!
The motherfucking death row! Sentenced to the death row!
Electricity feels cold, it's running down my veins!
Forcing all my insides out, this really is my end
The world has cheered them on as they got rid of this disease
A mad man with a knife and gun got killed, they smile they're pleased!
Death row! Sentenced to the death row!
Have you ever been driven to the point of no return, when no one gives a shit, they'd rather see you burn
And all you want to do is grant that wish, drink yourself to death like the fucking irish, cause it drowns the pain and fucks with your brain, though I couldnt give a shit cause I'm fucking insane
Now I'm doin things like I never done before, it's obvious now, don't give a fuck about the law
Cause you pushed and I'm weak, it's only been four weeks since I held you in my arms, now all I do is weep
I can't be replaced you were meant for me, settle for second best and now I dream, of what I'd do to the prick if I ever get the chance, load up an A.K and make the fucker dance
And I'd make you watch you fucking bitch, make you see what you did to me
Cause we walk the same path but in different shoes, look at the future and have different views
You seein a pot'o gold at the end of the road, I'm seein a cell door with a slightly different flow, cause I'll be there for life and I don't give a shit,
You paint it black, this fading world.
You tear it apart, I push it away.
The further I stray, the bigger the fright,
To ever wake up from these endless nights.
I'm wasting time, all these wasted times.
I'll doubt it'll sound the same next to me down here.
No matter how you choose to spit their words.
Face down, we're fucked, at the bottom of this wishing
well.
Face down.
Time, oh wasted times.
All these wasted times.
No open doors left for me and you,
Left to rot at the bottom of this wishing well.
Captivity of insecurity.
It's make-believe, and nothing worth.
You're make-believe, your nothing worth.
It would solve a lot of problems If death was enforced here It would put the shit up murderers, rapists and the queers If death was made the sentence Then sex crimes they may drop The pervert would be no more And that would be no loss
Chorus: Death row, death row Just four walls nowhere to go Waiting for the day that you meet your maker You're in a cell on death row
An alternative to prison at the rate-payers loss A noose around the neck or an electric shock What gives a man a right to live If he takes another's life? He's killed once, he'll kill again So lets end this bastard's life
Chorus
Standing in a court room the verdict it is death He killed an innocent person Put a cord around his neck It happens all the time on American city streets Murders, rapes and muggings Keep Britain free from this
