rAndom International
The brilliantly scientific London collective on creating projects like the LED spray paint, pixelroller, digital tape and “Audience” installation at the Royal Opera House made of 64 interactive, hominine mirrors.
Working at the intersection of science, design and art, Stuart Wood, Flo Ortkrass and Hannes Koch are not just interested in designing unique design products, but inventing and creating interactive, experiential installations by marrying high-end digital and analog worlds. The trio founded their collective rAndom International in 2002, after receiving their Masters from the Royal College of Art. They have managed an impressive list of projects including PixelRoller, a paint roller that prints digital information in pixels to their recent AUDIENCE installation at the Royal Opera House in London, where they positioned digitally guided mirrors that engaged and followed the movements of the visitors. Experimentation and meticulous research are essential for rAndom International who has already won numerous awards and gained commissions by a diverse range clients and artists such as Philips Design, the BBC, MetaDesign, Studio von Klier, Olafur Eliasson, PearsonLloyd and Audi Design. Gestalten paid them a visit in their studio in London’s East End.

"Great Apes and the Evolution of Human Diet" by Craig Stanford, PhD
ABSTRACT: Reconstructions of ancestral human diets can be based on the recent human past, in which diets were likely varied (the notion of a "Paleo Diet" is therefore highly simplistic), or in the ancient human past. This paper will examine the deep roots of the diet to which earliest hominins were adapted. I will show that great ape species are adapted to a fruit-based diet, with meat playing a small but important role in at least one species, the chimpanzee. The overall goal of the paper is to point out the generalizations and false premises in the debate over 'natural' modern human diets from the perspective of the diets that our ancestors ate.

Man The Fat Hunter: Animal Fat Shortage as a Driver of Human Evolution and Prehistory
Abstract:
Using a bioenergetic approach and physiological, anatomical, archaeological, ethnographic, isotopic, botanical, genetic and zoological evidence my research has identified an obligated animal fat requirement in human nutrition beginning with the Homo erectus.
In a recent paper published PLoS ONE (linked in bio), written in co-operation with researchers from Tel Aviv University: we applied a bioenergetic model to test the hypothesis that shortage of animal fat that developed locally in the Levant 400 thousand years ago due to the disappearance of elephants was an important factor in the evolution of a new modern human lineage.
Presently, we continue with the application of the Obligated Fat Model in an attempt to understand more recent critical developments in humans' existence. Some of our present research results will be reported.
The lecture will also provide an opportunity to recognize the important role that the Paleo/Low Carb/Ancestral community bloggers in general, and some bloggers in particular, have played in the initiation and development of my research.
Bio:
Miki Ben-Dor, M.B.A., is a Doctoral Candidate at the Department of Archaeology and Ancient Near Eastern Studies, Tel Aviv University (Israel). He blogs in Hebrew at paleostyle.com and has there, over one hundred posts on human nutrition from an evolutionary point of view. He is the lead author on a recently published a scientific paper: Man the Fat Hunter: The Demise of Homo erectus and the Emergence of a New Hominin Lineage in the Middle Pleistocene (ca. 400 kyr) Levant.

Neanderthal Genome Project: New Insights into Human Evolution
** watch future Linda Hall Library lectures live at http://new.livestream.com/lindahall **
About this lecture:
May 3, 2012, at the Linda Hall Library
Richard Edward Green, Assistant Professor of Biomolecular Engineering, University of California-Santa Cruz.
Dr. Green spoke at the Library on "Recent Human Evolution as Revealed by Ancient Hominin Genomes" as part of the Relatively Human Lecture Series.
Dr. Green has helped pioneer the use of advanced sequencing technology to study ancient DNA extracted from fossil bones. As a postdoctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, he coordinated the Neanderthal Genome Project.
A paper on the Neanderthal genome published in May 2010 earned him the Newcomb Cleveland Prize for the outstanding paper published in the journal Science. A subsequent paper published in the December 2010 issue of Nature described a previously unknown group of human relatives, called “Denisovans.”
This draft sequence yields important new insights into the evolution of modern humans and helps scientists identify features in our genome that define the basis of human uniqueness.
