CNN photojournalist Mark Phillips captured a dramatic rescue of Yazidis during an Iraqi military humanitarian airdrop (CNN) -- The Iraqi air force and fighters with the Kurdish peshmerga carried out a dramatic rescue mission Monday at Mount Sinjar, taking supplies to desperate Yazidis and bringing some on board to make it safely out. A CNN crew was on the flight that took baby diapers, milk, water and food to the site where thousands of people have been driven by ISIS, which calls itself the Islamic State. CNN's Ivan Watson, who was on the chopper, described the mission as "heroic." Teams hurled out bags and boxes of food from as high as 50 feet before approaching the ground. Once the chopper landed, some of the trapped families rushed the helicopter. Soon, numerous people -- including babies and the elderly -- were packed into the flight. As it took off, evacuating the sobbing, hungry people, fighters on board had to open fire at the ground in order to make it away from ISIS. "They flew in shooting; they flew out shooting," Watson reported. "There was not a dry eye on the aircraft." video footage camera Dramatic Iraqi Yazidis rescue mission at mount Sinjar from ISIS video footage camera Dramatic Iraqi Yazidis rescue mission at mount Sinjar from ISIS video footage camera Dramatic Iraqi Yazidis rescue mission at mount Sinjar from ISIS video footage camera Dramatic Iraqi Yazidis rescue mission at mount Sinjar from ISIS Dramatic Iraqi Yazidis rescue mission at mount Sinjar from ISIS 2014, august. There were reports that thousands of Yazidi Kurds, including children, may have already lost their lives after being trapped in the mountains without food and water for days. There were fears the death toll can only rise. David Cameron spoke by phone to Barack Obama, the US President, in which they agreed that aid drops alone will not be enough and the priority must be to “get these people to safety and avert a genocide”. Downing Street said that the refugees faced a “desperate choice” between risking dying from a lack of food and water in temperatures of up to 122F (50C) on the mountainside or “descending into the barbaric hands of terrorists”. Jonathan Krohn, from The Telegraph became the first Western journalist to reach the mountains and make contact with the refugees after flying onto Mount Sinjar in a relief helicopter. He watched as hundreds of refugees ran toward the helicopter for one of the few deliveries of aid to make it to the mountain. The helicopter, which was sent by the Iraq Army Aviation force, dipped low, opened its gun bays and dropped water and food into the arms of the waiting refugees. Kurds unite to fight militants, rescue 30,000 Yazidi civilians #IraqatWar More than 30,000 Iraqi Yazidis are reportedly stranded, without food and water, in the Sinjar mountains, near the Syrian border General Ahmed Ithwany, who led the mission, told The Telegraph “it is death valley. Iraqis get blown away
Iraqis get blown away
Ok, after all the colorful comments that this video has been receiving I think I should clarify a few things, or at least offer the back story. These guys that you see here are in fact detainees that were held and questioned by the Rangers you see here. Now in my job as a crew chief I am not often informed of what exactly we might be doing, so I thought we were taking them to an Iraqi jail. Turns out it was a catch and release. Not pictured here is a town literally about a 1/4 to 1/2 mile down the road we landed on. This town was where these particular gentleman were from. That is why they look so happy when they take the blindfolds off. If you are wondering why they must be blindfolded you need to think of the aspect of giving a suspected terrorist a birds eye view of our bases or operations. That is simple logic if you are one of us, but just thought I'd throw that in. Even though we may have been releasing them doesn't mean we trust them. You never know with a war like that. They just couldn't prove anything that time. Happens all the time in our legal system too. Next, we did not leave them out in the middle of the desert, and we did give them water, even though there was in fact, a town a 1/4 to 1/2 mile down the road. Finally, the reason we took off in a hurry was because a very large group of people were approaching the helicopter from the nose, and were within a hundred yards or so when we finally got these guys sorted out. It's not my fault if the guys you see get blasted by sand didn't want to move. That is all.- published: 25 Dec 2010

Ali M. Fadhil Ahmed Al Rubaye moved four years ago with his wife Adraa and his son and daughter to the small commercial town of Yiwu, on the east coast of China (Zhejiang province). This 48-year-old decided to leave his native Baghdad to develop his import-export business in China. Far from the insecurity of his home country, he and his family have built an "Iraqi" lifestyle for themselves in a town which is home to one of the largest expatriate Muslim communities in China. Iraqis attempt river crossing as militants take Mosul - BBC News
As many as 500,000 people have been forced to flee the Iraqi city of Mosul after Islamist militants effectively took control of it, the International Organization for Migration says. Troops were among those fleeing as hundreds of jihadists from the ISIS group overran the city and much of the surrounding province of Nineveh. Some civilians resorted to crossing the river Tigris without boats to escape the violence in Mosul. Paul Adams reports.
