BOOK REVIEW RENMIN CHINESE LAW REVIEW Selected Papers of The Jurist Vol. 1 Edited by Jichun Shi ISBN: 978 1 78254 434 0 EDWARD ELGAR PUBLISHING LTD www.e-elgar.com A WINDOW ON CURRENT LEGAL RESEACH IN CHINA An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers With business having gone global and China a major trading partner of the UK, company lawyers as well as academics will be interested in this latest publication from Edward Elgar. The book is a compilation of 14 articles researched and written by highly regarded Chinese academics from at least as many faculties of law at China's major universities. It is the Renmin University of China Law School that edits and publishes 'The Jurist' from which these various chapters have been translated and reproduced in this book. These chapters, as the editor Shi Jichun reminds us 'bring to the fore the latest updates in legal research', focusing on topical legal issues within China. Covering a number of different areas of law, the articles are a choice selection aimed at imparting to non-Chinese readers a general understanding of those issues considered of prime importance in china, including progress in legal research and 'the reality of the rule of law in China. The first article, quite intriguingly, discusses the word 'constitution' in Western languages and refers by way of illustration to discussions on the subject by a wide range legal philosophers and theorists from the ancient world, from Plato and Aristotle to Cicero and many more. There are any number of references to the concept of 'constitution' in the pre-eminent Greek and Graeco-Roman city states, including Sparta and Athens. What an interesting perspective on matters constitutional -- including the various comments on democracy! Subsequent essays examine in detail such topics as the 'economized state'... the changes in the Chinese legal system for implementing WTO laws... the nature of social harm in contemporary China, illegal financing, credit assets securitization -- described as a new financing mode for China via the credit system. A new approach to analyzing the sub -- prime crisis is given here. In another essay, judiciary strategy for historical problems is examined in detail, in other words, problems related to the evasion of law in China and the perceived lack of strict legal supervision. There is indeed much to contemplate in this book. Lawyers and academics, particularly those interested in legal theory and comparative law will find its diversity of subject matter and opinion thought provoking to say the least, especially in view of China's increasing influence in international law and politics. Note also, the copious footnoting throughout and the useful index at the back. The publication date is 2013.- published: 13 May 2014

Spread Rumors, Go to Jail Says New Chinese Law | China Uncensored
It's like a lottery, only you win jail time! A new Chinese law means you can be sentenced to three years in jail for "spreading rumors" online. What counts as spreading rumors? Well that's the fun part! It's so vaguely defined, it could be anything! Just write something online and see what happens. It's like the lottery! Anyone could win, good luck people of China. You only have your freedom to win if you lose, and your freedom to lose if you win. Chinese Troops Prep to Invade As Obama Prepares to Declare Martial Law
Chinese Troops Prep to Invade As Obama Prepares to Declare Martial Law - no civil war, because we're not against each other, just against individuals trying to take away the bill of rights. the powers that be are trying to egg us on, to spark any excuse to declare martial law. - foreign troops on us soil - police, military, command swearing oaths to not cooperate with martial law, grab guns, nor shoot citizens... could this be why foreign troops are here. - roommate reports foreign troops on air force base every day, training, flying, staying for extended periods of time - Chinese off the coast of California - Obama fired all generals that wouldn't agree to fire on US citizens, nor order their troops to fire on US citizens- published: 28 Jan 2014
