The lovely Julia and I are out exploring another quintessentially English village, Fittleworth in West Sussex. Our walk starts at the two sixteenth century pack-horse bridges, both of stone construction and originally built narrower and widened more recently for modern day traffic. The first bridge crosses the river Rother, while the second, Clappers Bridge, gives access over the mill stream running from Fittleworth Mill. Our walk continues to the heart of the village where the 14th century coaching inn, The Swan, stands proud, welcoming travellers. In the coaching era, the inn offered a change of horses for those heading south from London and about to navigate the steep slops of Bury Hill.
