Iran Plane Crash Kills 50 Near Mehrabad Airport In Tehran Media Reports

More than 40 people were killed when a small passengers plane crashed near an airport in the Iranian capital Tehran, Iranian state media report.

The aircraft went down at Mehrabad airport, in the west of the city, on Sunday morning, state media said.

The plane was reportedly heading to the eastern city of Tabas when it crashed at 04:48 GMT.

Iran has suffered a series of plane crashes, blamed on its ageing aircraft and poor maintenance record.

There have been more than 200 accidents involving Iranian planes in the past 25 years, leading to more than 2,000 deaths.

A ceasefire in Gaza is still holding, but it\'s feared that won\'t be for much longer. That\'s after the sides failed to agree on extending the truce. The month-long conflict has already claimed up to 1900 lives. Most of the victims are Palestinian civilians - and as correspondent Harry Fear reports, only a handful of them are lucky enough to get adequate medical help.

Turkey has emerged as a regional economic force under Erdogan, who, as prime minister for more than a decade, has ridden a wave of religiously conservative support to transform the secular republic founded by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in 1923. Erdogan's win ensures he will remain at the country's helm for at least another five years. http://feeds.nbcnews.com/c/35002/f/663303/s/3d5e440e/sc/7/l/0L0Snbcnews0N0Cnews0Cworld0Cturkish0Eopposition0Ecandidate0Econgratulates0Eerdogan0Eelection0Eresult0En177246/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com

Islamic State militants have killed at least 500 members of Iraq's Yazidi ethnic minority during their offensive in the north, Iraq's human rights minister told Reuters on Sunday. Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said the Sunni militants had also buried alive some of their victims, including women and children. Some 300 women were kidnapped as slaves, he added. "We have striking evidence obtained from Yazidis fleeing Sinjar and some who escaped death, and also crime scene images that show indisputably that the gangs of the Islamic States have executed at least 500 Yazidis after seizing Sinjar," Sudani told Reuters. Sinjar is the ancient home of the Yazidis, one of the towns captured by the Sunni militants who view the community as "devil worshipers". "Some of the victims, including women and children were buried alive in scattered mass graves in and around Sinjar," Sudani said TAG:Islamic State killed 500 Yazidis, buried some victims alive Islamic State killed 500 Yazidis, buried some victims alive Iraq: Islamic State killed 500 Yazidis, buried some victims ISIS killed 500 Yazidis, buried some alive incl women and ... With Gaza truce talks deadlocked, airstrikes and rocket attacks persist and renewed fighting between Israel and Hamas continues to claim victims. An Israeli airstrike on a car in the southern Gaza town of Rafah left two dead on Saturday, a day on which at least nine Palestinians were killed, according to local medics. At the same time, militants fired rockets at Israel. In Tel Aviv on Saturday some 200 Israelis protested against the Gaza war entering its second month, despite an initial ban c… READ MORE : http://www.euronews.com/2014/08/10/more-gaza-fighting-amid-fears-cairo-truce-talks-could-collapse What is in the news today? Unthinkable just a few years ago, Selahattin Demirtas' bid for Turkey's highest office underscores how Kurdish politics has entered the mainstream even as Kurds in neighboring Syria and Iraq push for more autonomy. Peace talks between Turkey and Kurdish rebels, overseen by Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan to try to end a three-decade war, have brought two years of calm and paved the way for Demirtas to run as Turkey's first openly Kurdish presidential candidate. Demirtas said in an interview, "My candidacy is merely the most visible aspect of how much Turkey has changed as racism and extreme nationalist sentiment weaken," http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/worldNews/~3/Fja-knHm9xE/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com

Iraq conflict: Obama vows to stop jihadist state | BREAKING NEWS - 09 AUG 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/ZakWorldNEWS US President Barack Obama has said he will not allow Sunni Muslim jihadists to carve out a "caliphate", or Islamic state, straddling Syria and Iraq. The US has been carrying out air strikes on Islamic State (IS) militants in northern Iraq. Mr Obama said there would be further air strikes if necessary but no US military operation on the ground. The UK has sent a plane to join the Americans in dropping relief to beleaguered religious refugees. A cargo plane left RAF Brize Norton in England carrying British humanitarian aid to Iraq, the BBC understands. IS, a jihadist group formerly known as Isis, has taken control of swathes of Iraq and Syria and has also seized the country's largest dam. As well as persecuting Christian and Yazidi minorities, the group is confronting the Kurds in northern Iraq and threatening the city of Irbil. Mr Obama has accused Iraq's Shia Arab majority of squandering an opportunity to share power with the Sunni Arabs and Kurds. 'We can run them off' In an interview for the New York Times, Mr Obama said: "We're not going to let them [IS] create some caliphate through Syria and Iraq, but we can only do that if we know that we've got partners on the ground who are capable of filling the void." A ceasefire in Gaza is still holding, but it's feared that won't be for much longer. That's after the sides failed to agree on extending the truce. The month-long conflict has already claimed up to 1900 lives. Most of the victims are Palestinian civilians - and as correspondent Harry Fear reports, only a handful of them are lucky enough to get adequate medical help. A man was killed when a charging e-cigarette exploded and ignited oxygen equipment he is believed to have been using, Merseyside's fire service said. The 62-year-old victim was found in the living room of a house in Penkett Road, Wallasey. A small fire in the bedroom of the property had gone out before firefighters arrived, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) said. The exact cause of death is yet to be established, with an inquest now due. Mixing warning An MFRS spokesman said: "The subsequent fire investigation identified that an e-cigarette that had been charging in the bedroom exploded, caught fire and ignited the oxygen tube of an oxygen concentrator, which may have been in use by the occupier." Myles Platt, MFRS area manager said: "The investigation into the cause of this fire is continuing but at this stage it is thought that the charging device being used at the time may not have been the one supplied with the e-cigarette. "We urge people to always use electrical equipment in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and guidance, always ensure that no electrical items are left charging overnight or left unattended for a long period when being charged, and do not mix parts from different e-cigarettes. "Only use the original charger or electrical cables supplied and ensure you purchase electrical items from a reputable source." Since January, nine fires involving e-cigarettes have been recorded on Merseyside. Service representatives are speaking to people in the Wallasey area to give advice about the safe use of e-cigarettes following Tuesday's fire.

Palestinian negotiators have warned they will leave Cairo on Sunday unless Israel agrees to return to Egyptian-mediated negotiations to end the fighting in Gaza without setting conditions. "We told the Egyptians that if the Israelis are not coming and if there is no significant development, we are leaving today," Palestinian negotiator Bassam Salhi told the Associated Press. Israel has said it will not take part in truce talks while violence is ongoing. "Israel will not negotiate under fire," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in broadcast remarks at the weekly meeting of his cabinet, in Tel Aviv. "The operation will continue until its objective - the restoration of quiet over a protraced period - is achieved. I said at the beginning and throughout the operation - it will take time, and stamina is required." Reporting from West Jerusalem, Al Jazeera's Nisreen El-Shamayleh said that Netanyahu has come under a lot of pressure internationally and domestically. "Internally, people are frustrated especially those who live in the south who had evacuated their homes along the border with Gaza for a month and then were told to return home during the ceasefire only to find out fighting has resumed, she said. "He is also under pressure from the international community to return to Cairo for talks." Netanyahu's comments came as Israeli air strikes killed at least four people in Gaza. Palestinians factions refused to extend a 72-hour ceasefire that expired on Friday, saying Israel had refused to accept demands including an end to the blockade of Gaza and the opening of a seaport. Israel launched more than 30 air attacks in Gaza on Saturday, killing nine Palestinians, and Palestinian fighters fired rockets at Israel as the conflict entered a second month, defying international efforts to revive a ceasefire. Medical officials in Gaza said two Palestinians were killed when their motorcycle was bombed and the bodies of three others were found beneath the rubble of one of three bombed mosques. Two Palestinians were killed in an air strike on a car in the southern town of Rafah, Gaza medics said. A 13-year-old girl and a man were killed in other air assaults, hospital officials said. An Israeli military statement said four of the Palestinians targeted on Saturday were Hamas fighters. Anti-war protest Citing security concerns over continued rocket fire, Israeli police banned an anti-war protest planned for Tel Aviv on Saturday, saying regulations prohibited large gatherings in areas at risk of attack. However, about 150 demonstrators defied the ban and gathered at the protest, police said. Heavy civilian casualties and destruction during Israel's campaign in packed residential areas of the Gaza Strip have raised international alarm over the past month. Gaza officials say the war has killed 1,917 Palestinians, most of them civilians. Israel says 64 of its soldiers and three civilians have died in the fighting that started on July 8. The White House has urged Israel and the Palestinians to do what they can to preserve civilians after having failed to extend their ceasefire, while UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has warned that any further fighting would "exacerbate the already appalling humanitarian situation in Gaza".
