St Maurice (also Moritz, Morris, or Mauritius) was the leader of the legendary Roman Theban Legion in the 3rd century, and one of the favorite and most widely venerated saints of that group.
Maurice was born in AD 250 in Thebes, an ancient city in Egypt near the site of the Aswan Dam. He was brought up in the region of Thebes (Luxor—Egypt) and became a soldier in the Roman army. He was gradually promoted until he became the leader of the Theban legion, formed of 6600 soldiers.[4] Maurice was an acknowledged Christian at a time when the Church was considered to be a threat to the Roman Empire. Yet, he moved easily in the pagan society of his day.[5]
According to the hagiographical material, the legion, entirely composed of Christians, had been called from Thebes in Egypt to Gaul to assist Maximian to defeat a revolt by the bagaudae.[3] The Theban Legion was dispatched with orders to clear the St. Bernard Pass across Mt. Blanc. Before going into battle, they were instructed to offer sacrifices to the pagan gods and pay homage to the emperor.[5]
However, when Maximian ordered them to harass some local Christians, they refused and Maximian ordered the unit to be punished. Every tenth soldier was killed, a military punishment known as decimation. More orders followed, they still refused, partly because of Maurice's encouragement, and a second decimation was ordered. In response to their refusal to use violence against fellow Christians, Maximian ordered all the remaining members of the 6,600 unit to be executed. The place in Switzerland where this occurred, known as Agaunum, is now Saint Maurice-en-Valais, site of the Abbey of Saint Maurice-en-Valais.
So reads the earliest account of their martyrdom, contained in the public letter Eucherius, bishop of Lyon (c. 434–450), addressed to his fellow bishop Salvius. Alternate versions[citation needed] have the legion refusing Maximian's orders only after discovering a town they had just destroyed had been inhabited by innocent Christians, or that the emperor had them executed when they refused to sacrifice to the Roman gods.
Saint Maurice's feast day is on the 22nd of September. (Two days from right now.) So for my Catholic and Coptic viewers, I present to you, this diddy on the life and martyrdom of St Maurice.

He is the patron saint of soldiers, veterans, armorers, clothmakers, dyers and weapons dealers. He is also Patron Saint of the house of Savoy, Piedmont Italy, The Vatican Swiss Guards, Lombardi, The Holy Roman Emperor, Burgundy and Various other fraternities, cities and counties in Europe.
In 287 AD under the order of Emperor Maximian, The Thebans were sent with other Legions to crush the rebellion of the Gauls near the present day borders of Switzerland and Southern France. After this, Maximian ordered the Thebans to kill the local Christian population and perform pagan sacrifices to the Roman Gods including Caesar Maximian who himself is worshiped as a deity.
The theban legion refused this order and suffered decimation twice. After further refusals they were all commanded to be put to death by Maximian. Maurice is considered to be one of the most beloved saints in Europe but is largely unknown in the US. He is also the first black saint to be cannonized.

Au cours de ses 1500 ans d'existence, l'abbaye a joué un rôle majeur dans l'histoire de l'Eglise en Suisse. Elle est la plus ancienne abbaye d'Europe occidentale à avoir été occupée par des moines en permanence. L'une de ses caractéristiques fut de suivre lors des premiers siècles la laus perennis - louange perpétuelle - pour garder le sanctuaire et accueillir les pèlerins. Elle dépend directement du Pape et est une abbaye territoriale, qui exerce sa propre juridiction spirituelle sur l'abbaye et sur les paroisses de son territoire. Malgré les périodes difficiles, les troubles révolutionnaires, l'abbaye est restée un lieu de ressourcement. Au 9ème siècle, des chanoines réguliers s'installent, pour y vivre selon la règle de Saint Augustin la liturgie et le ministère des paroisses, de l'enseignement et des missions. Aujourd'hui, si les vocations sont difficiles, 48 religieux y vivent. A l'occasion de la clôture du Jubilé, le 22 septembre 2015, KTO vous emmène découvrir ce haut lieu de l'Eglise en Suisse.

Few documents portray the ethnicity of the Moors in medieval Europe with more passion,
boldness and clarity than Morien.
Morien is a metrical romance rendered into English prose from the medieval Dutch version of the Lancelot.
Morien is the adventure of a splendidly heroic Moorish knight.
He was A Christian Knight, that lived during the days of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.
Morien is described as follows:
“He was all black, even as I tell ye: his head, his body, and his hands were all black, saving only his teeth. His shield and his armour were even those of a Moor, and black as a raven.”
Initially in the adventure, Morien is simply called “the Moor.”
He first challenges,
then battles, and finally wins the unqualified respect admiration of Sir Lancelot.
In addition, Morien is extremely forthright and articulate.
Sir Gawain, whose life was saved on the battlefield by Sir Morien,
is stated to have “harkened, and smiled at the black knight’s speech.”
It is noted that Morien was as “black as pitch.
The study of the African presence in history,
whether in the African Diaspora or Africa itself, is a richly rewarding endeavor.

L’abbaye territoriale de Saint Maurice d'Agaune a été fondée en 515 par le futur roi burgonde Saint Sigismond, à l'emplacement d'un sanctuaire plus ancien érigé par Théodore d'Octodure, premier évêque connu du Valais, et abritant les reliques de Maurice d'Agaune, martyr du IIIe siècle. La cité d'Agaune a d'ailleurs pris son nom et s'appelle aujourd'hui Saint Maurice. L'abbaye est la plus ancienne d'Europe occidentale en activité à avoir été occupée en permanence. Si le premier sanctuaire, dont les fondations ont été mises en valeur, fut érigé dans le sens classique est-ouest, les nombreux éboulements successifs poussèrent finalement les chanoines à le reconstruire au XVIIe siècle dans le sens nord-sud. Cela n'empêcha pas un nouvel éboulement de créer de gros dégâts en 1942, obligeant ainsi la flèche du clocher et une partie de l'église à être reconstruits. L'abbatiale occupe le rang de basilique mineure depuis 1948. L'abbaye ne fut jamais dépendante d'un diocèse et d'un évêque, car elle bénéficia dès sa fondation de l'immédiateté pontificale, c'est-à-dire qu'elle dépend directement du Pape et de lui seul. Aujourd'hui encore, le père abbé de Saint-Maurice exerce sa propre juridiction spirituelle sur sa communauté abbatiale, ainsi que sur les cinq paroisses de son territoire. L'abbaye possède également un collège renommé ayant un statut d'établissement semi-privé.
L'imposant clocher roman avec sa flèche de pierre, typique de la Vallée du Rhône, semble se dresser ici depuis la nuit des temps. Or, quand on y pénètre, on se rend compte que les étages supérieurs et sa flèche mêlent pierre et béton, conséquence du dernier terrible éboulement de 1942. La partie la plus ancienne de la sonnerie ne date que de 1818. Elle est l’œuvre de fondeurs veveysans déjà maintes fois rencontrés en Suisse romande : Pierre Dreffet et son neveu Marc Treboux. Ruetschi d'Aarau y ajouta une cloche plus grande en 1947. La sonnerie à la volée fut complétée en 1998 par un bourdon coulé par Paccard. Cette cloche, modèle réduit à l'échelle 1/2 de la plus grande cloche de volée au monde (un la1 de 32 tonnes), fut coulée dans un chantier naval de Nantes. Fêlé peu après sa mise en service, le bourdon de Saint Maurice fut refait en 2010, toujours par Paccard, mais cette fois dans les ateliers de Sévrier. On trouve également, dans le clocheton au dessus du chœur, une petite cloche Ruetschi de 1988. Elle remplace une cloche fêlée de 1752. Signalons enfin que l'abbaye de Saint Maurice possède le plus grand carillon de Suisse avec 49 cloches. L'instrument est formé des 4 plus grandes cloches à la volée (sol#2-do#3-mi3-fa#3) et de 45 cloches Eijsbouts. Nous sommes donc en présence d'un carillon de quatre octaves basé sur le do#3, entièrement chromatique dès ré#3, avec sol#2 comme dominante inférieure.

Bourg-Saint-Maurice
Bourg-Saint-Maurice, popularly known as Bourg, is a commune in the Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France.
It is the last large town along the Tarentaise valley in the heart of the French Alps.
History
Bergintrum was a place on the Gallic side of the pass of the Alpes Graiae, lying on the road marked in the Antonine Itinerary between Mediolanum (modern Milan) and Vienna (modern Vienne). D'Anville (Notice, etc.) places it, according to the Table, between Axima (modern Aime) and Alpis Graia. The distance from Bergintrum to Axima is marked viiii M. P. The Alpis Graia is usually identified with a settlement at the watershed on the pass of the Little Saint Bernard, which divides the waters that flow to the Isère on the French side from those that flow to the Dora Baltea on the Italian side. This is the place D'Anville calls l'Hôpital, on the authority of a manuscript map of the country. D'Anville first proposed the identification of Bergintrum with Bourg-Saint-Maurice; although he acknowledged that xii, the distance in the Table between Bergintrum and Alpis Graia, does not fit the distance between Bourg-Saint-Maurice and l'Hôpital, which is less. Modern scholarship confirms the identification.

Saint
A saint is a person who is recognized as having an exceptional degree of holiness, or likeness to God. http://quasimodosonneurdecloches.ch/cloches-saint-maurice-ch-vs-abbaye-territoriale-de-saint-maurice-dagaune/ L’abbaye territoriale de Saint Maurice d'Agaune a été fondée en 515 par le futur roi burgonde Saint Sigismond, à l'emplacement d'un sanctuaire plus ancien érigé par Théodore d'Octodure, premier évêque connu du Valais, et abritant les reliques de Maurice d'Agaune, martyr du IIIe siècle. La cité d'Agaune a d'ailleurs pris son nom et s'appelle aujourd'hui Saint Maurice. L'abbaye est la plus ancienne d'Europe occidentale en activité à avoir été occupée en permanence. Si le premier sanctuaire, dont les fondations ont été mises en valeur, fut érigé dans le sens classique est-ouest, les nombreux éboulements successifs poussèrent finalement les chanoines à le reconstruire au XVIIe siècle dans le sens nord-sud. Cela n'empêcha pas un nouvel éboulement de créer de gros dégâts en 1942, obligeant ainsi la flèche du clocher et une partie de l'église à être reconstruits. L'abbatiale occupe le rang de basilique mineure depuis 1948. L'abbaye ne fut jamais dépendante d'un diocèse et d'un évêque, car elle bénéficia dès sa fondation de l'immédiateté pontificale, c'est-à-dire qu'elle dépend directement du Pape et de lui seul. Aujourd'hui encore, le père abbé de Saint-Maurice exerce sa propre juridiction spirituelle sur sa communauté abbatiale, ainsi que sur les cinq paroisses de son territoire. L'abbaye possède également un collège renommé ayant un statut d'établissement semi-privé. L'imposant clocher roman avec sa flèche de pierre, typique de la Vallée du Rhône, semble se dresser ici depuis la nuit des temps. Or, quand on y pénètre, on se rend compte que les étages supérieurs et sa flèche mêlent pierre et béton, conséquence du dernier terrible éboulement de 1942. La partie la plus ancienne de la sonnerie ne date que de 1818. Elle est l’œuvre de fondeurs veveysans déjà maintes fois rencontrés en Suisse romande : Pierre Dreffet et son neveu Marc Treboux. Ruetschi d'Aarau y ajouta une cloche plus grande en 1947. La sonnerie à la volée fut complétée en 1998 par un bourdon coulé par Paccard. Cette cloche, modèle réduit à l'échelle 1/2 de la plus grande cloche de volée au monde (un la1 de 32 tonnes), fut coulée dans un chantier naval de Nantes. Fêlé peu après sa mise en service, le bourdon de Saint Maurice fut refait en 2010, toujours par Paccard, mais cette fois dans les ateliers de Sévrier. On trouve également, dans le clocheton au dessus du chœur, une petite cloche Ruetschi de 1988. Elle remplace une cloche fêlée de 1752. Signalons enfin que l'abbaye de Saint Maurice possède le plus grand carillon de Suisse avec 49 cloches. L'instrument est formé des 4 plus grandes cloches à la volée (sol#2-do#3-mi3-fa#3) et de 45 cloches Eijsbouts. Blanc. Before going into battle, they were instructed to offer sacrifices to the pagan gods and pay homage to the emperor.[5]
However, when Maximian ordered them to harass some local Christians, they refused and Maximian ordered the unit to be punished. Every tenth soldier was killed, a military punishment known as decimation. More orders followed, they still refused, partly because of Maurice's encouragement, and a second decimation was ordered. In response to their refusal to use violence against fellow Christians, Maximian ordered all the remaining members of the 6,600 unit to be executed. The place in Switzerland where this occurred, known as Agaunum, is now Saint Maurice-en-Valais, site of the Abbey of Saint Maurice-en-Valais.
So reads the earliest account of their martyrdom, contained in the public letter Eucherius, bishop of Lyon (c. 434–450), addressed to his fellow bishop Salvius. Alternate versions[citation needed] have the legion refusing Maximian's orders only after discovering a town they had just destroyed had been inhabited by innocent Christians, or that the emperor had them executed when they refused to sacrifice to the Roman gods.

The theban legion refused this order and suffered decimation twice. After further refusals they were all commanded to be put to death by Maximian. Maurice is considered to be one of the most beloved saints in Europe but is largely unknown in the US. He is also the first black saint to be cannonized.

L’abbaye territoriale de Saint Maurice d'Agaune a été fondée en 515 par le futur roi burgonde Saint Sigismond, à l'emplacement d'un sanctuaire plus ancien érigé par Théodore d'Octodure, premier évêque connu du Valais, et abritant les reliques de Maurice d'Agaune, martyr du IIIe siècle. La cité d'Agaune a d'ailleurs pris son nom et s'appelle aujourd'hui Saint Maurice. L'abbaye est la plus ancienne d'Europe occidentale en activité à avoir été occupée en permanence. Si le premier sanctuaire, dont les fondations ont été mises en valeur, fut érigé dans le sens classique est-ouest, les nombreux éboulements successifs poussèrent finalement les chanoines à le reconstruire au XVIIe siècle dans le sens nord-sud. Cela n'empêcha pas un nouvel éboulement de créer de gros dégâts en 1942, obligeant ainsi la flèche du clocher et une partie de l'église à être reconstruits. L'abbatiale occupe le rang de basilique mineure depuis 1948. L'abbaye ne fut jamais dépendante d'un diocèse et d'un évêque, car elle bénéficia dès sa fondation de l'immédiateté pontificale, c'est-à-dire qu'elle dépend directement du Pape et de lui seul. Aujourd'hui encore, le père abbé de Saint-Maurice exerce sa propre juridiction spirituelle sur sa communauté abbatiale, ainsi que sur les cinq paroisses de son territoire. L'abbaye possède également un collège renommé ayant un statut d'établissement semi-privé.
L'imposant clocher roman avec sa flèche de pierre, typique de la Vallée du Rhône, semble se dresser ici depuis la nuit des temps. Or, quand on y pénètre, on se rend compte que les étages supérieurs et sa flèche mêlent pierre et béton, conséquence du dernier terrible éboulement de 1942. La partie la plus ancienne de la sonnerie ne date que de 1818. Elle est l’œuvre de fondeurs veveysans déjà maintes fois rencontrés en Suisse romande : Pierre Dreffet et son neveu Marc Treboux. Ruetschi d'Aarau y ajouta une cloche plus grande en 1947. La sonnerie à la volée fut complétée en 1998 par un bourdon coulé par Paccard. Cette cloche, modèle réduit à l'échelle 1/2 de la plus grande cloche de volée au monde (un la1 de 32 tonnes), fut coulée dans un chantier naval de Nantes. Fêlé peu après sa mise en service, le bourdon de Saint Maurice fut refait en 2010, toujours par Paccard, mais cette fois dans les ateliers de Sévrier. On trouve également, dans le clocheton au dessus du chœur, une petite cloche Ruetschi de 1988. Elle remplace une cloche fêlée de 1752. Signalons enfin que l'abbaye de Saint Maurice possède le plus grand carillon de Suisse avec 49 cloches. L'instrument est formé des 4 plus grandes cloches à la volée (sol#2-do#3-mi3-fa#3) et de 45 cloches Eijsbouts. Nous sommes donc en présence d'un carillon de quatre octaves basé sur le do#3, entièrement chromatique dès ré#3, avec sol#2 comme dominante inférieure.

He was gradually promoted until he became the leader of the Theban legion, formed of 6600 soldiers.[4] Maurice was an acknowledged Christian at a time when the Church was considered to be a threat to the Roman Empire. Yet, he moved easily in the pagan society of his day.[5]
According to the hagiographical material, the legion, entirely composed of Christians, had been called from Thebes in Egypt to Gaul to assist Maximian to defeat a revolt by the bagaudae.[3] The Theban Legion was dispatched with orders to clear the St. Bernard Pass across Mt. Blanc. Before going into battle, they were instructed to offer sacrifices to the pagan gods and pay homage to the emperor.[5]
However, when Maximian ordered them to harass some local Christians, they refused and Maximian ordered the unit to be punished. Every tenth soldier was killed, a military punishment known as decimation. More orders followed, they still refused, partly because of Maurice's encouragement, and a second decimation was ordered. In response to their refusal to use violence against fellow Christians, Maximian ordered all the remaining members of the 6,600 unit to be executed. The place in Switzerland where this occurred, known as Agaunum, is now Saint Maurice-en-Valais, site of the Abbey of Saint Maurice-en-Valais.
So reads the earliest account of their martyrdom, contained in the public letter Eucherius, bishop of Lyon (c. 434–450), addressed to his fellow bishop Salvius. Alternate versions[citation needed] have the legion refusing Maximian's orders only after discovering a town they had just destroyed had been inhabited by innocent Christians, or that the emperor had them executed when they refused to sacrifice to the Roman gods.

The place in Switzerland where this occurred, known as Agaunum, is now Saint Maurice-en-Valais, site of the Abbey of Saint Maurice-en-Valais.
So reads the earliest account of their martyrdom, contained in the public letter Eucherius, bishop of Lyon (c. 434–450), addressed to his fellow bishop Salvius. Alternate versions[citation needed] have the legion refusing Maximian's orders only after discovering a town they had just destroyed had been inhabited by innocent Christians, or that the emperor had them executed when they refused to sacrifice to the Roman gods.

Saint Maurice (also Moritz, Morris, or Mauritius) was the leader of the legendary Roman Theban Legion n the 3rd century, and one of the favorite and most widely venerated saints of that group. He was the patron saint of several professions, locales, and kingdoms. He is revered in the Catholic Coptic and Orthodox churches.
He is the patron saint of soldiers, veterans, armorers, clothmakers, dyers and weapons dealers. He is also Patron Saint of the house of Savoy, Piedmont Italy, The Vatican Swiss Guards, Lombardi, The Holy Roman Emperor, Burgundy and Various other fraternities, cities and counties in Europe.
In 287 AD under the order of Emperor Maximian, The Thebans were sent with other Legions to crush the rebellion of the Gauls near the present day borders of Switzerland and Southern France. After this, Maximian ordered the Thebans to kill the local Christian population and perform pagan sacrifices to the Roman Gods including Caesar Maximian who himself is worshiped as a deity.
The theban legion refused this order and suffered decimation twice. After further refusals they were all commanded to be put to death by Maximian. Maurice is considered to be one of the most beloved saints in Europe but is largely unknown in the US. He is also the first black saint to be cannonized.

Au cours de ses 1500 ans d'existence, l'abbaye a joué un rôle majeur dans l'histoire de l'Eglise en Suisse. Elle est la plus ancienne abbaye d'Europe occidentale à avoir été occupée par des moines en permanence. L'une de ses caractéristiques fut de suivre lors des premiers siècles la laus perennis - louange perpétuelle - pour garder le sanctuaire et accueillir les pèlerins. Elle dépend directement du Pape et est une abbaye territoriale, qui exerce sa propre juridiction spirituelle sur l'abbaye et sur les paroisses de son territoire. Malgré les périodes difficiles, les troubles révolutionnaires, l'abbaye est restée un lieu de ressourcement. Au 9ème siècle, des chanoines réguliers s'installent, pour y vivre selon la règle de Saint Augustin la liturgie et le ministère des paroisses, de l'enseignement et des missions. L’abbaye territoriale de Saint Maurice d'Agaune a été fondée en 515 par le futur roi burgonde Saint Sigismond, à l'emplacement d'un sanctuaire plus ancien érigé par Théodore d'Octodure, premier évêque connu du Valais, et abritant les reliques de Maurice d'Agaune, martyr du IIIe siècle. La cité d'Agaune a d'ailleurs pris son nom et s'appelle aujourd'hui Saint Maurice. L'abbaye est la plus ancienne d'Europe occidentale en activité à avoir été occupée en permanence. Si le premier sanctuaire, dont les fondations ont été mises en valeur, fut érigé dans le sens classique est-ouest, les nombreux éboulements successifs poussèrent finalement les chanoines à le reconstruire au XVIIe siècle dans le sens nord-sud. Cela n'empêcha pas un nouvel éboulement de créer de gros dégâts en 1942, obligeant ainsi la flèche du clocher et une partie de l'église à être reconstruits. L'abbatiale occupe le rang de basilique mineure depuis 1948. L'abbaye ne fut jamais dépendante d'un diocèse et d'un évêque, car elle bénéficia dès sa fondation de l'immédiateté pontificale, c'est-à-dire qu'elle dépend directement du Pape et de lui seul. Aujourd'hui encore, le père abbé de Saint-Maurice exerce sa propre juridiction spirituelle sur sa communauté abbatiale, ainsi que sur les cinq paroisses de son territoire. L'abbaye possède également un collège renommé ayant un statut d'établissement semi-privé.
L'imposant clocher roman avec sa flèche de pierre, typique de la Vallée du Rhône, semble se dresser ici depuis la nuit des temps. Or, quand on y pénètre, on se rend compte que les étages supérieurs et sa flèche mêlent pierre et béton, conséquence du dernier terrible éboulement de 1942. La partie la plus ancienne de la sonnerie ne date que de 1818. Elle est l’œuvre de fondeurs veveysans déjà maintes fois rencontrés en Suisse romande : Pierre Dreffet et son neveu Marc Treboux. Ruetschi d'Aarau y ajouta une cloche plus grande en 1947. La sonnerie à la volée fut complétée en 1998 par un bourdon coulé par Paccard. Cette cloche, modèle réduit à l'échelle 1/2 de la plus grande cloche de volée au monde (un la1 de 32 tonnes), fut coulée dans un chantier naval de Nantes. Fêlé peu après sa mise en service, le bourdon de Saint Maurice fut refait en 2010, toujours par Paccard, mais cette fois dans les ateliers de Sévrier. On trouve également, dans le clocheton au dessus du chœur, une petite cloche Ruetschi de 1988. Elle remplace une cloche fêlée de 1752. Signalons enfin que l'abbaye de Saint Maurice possède le plus grand carillon de Suisse avec 49 cloches. L'instrument est formé des 4 plus grandes cloches à la volée (sol#2-do#3-mi3-fa#3) et de 45 cloches Eijsbouts. Nous sommes donc en présence d'un carillon de quatre octaves basé sur le do#3, entièrement chromatique dès ré#3, avec sol#2 comme dominante inférieure.
