Libyan Desert Glass
Libyan Desert Glass
Libyan Desert Glass is a stone that has stumped scientists for years, with it's origins having been questioned by more than one adventurer over the ages. Although Libyan Desert Glass is believed to be 29 million years old, and absolutely of natural origins, there is very little evidence of this ancient glass being used by cultures older than the ancient Egyptians. The Ancient Egyptians referred to this stone as ' Stone of God', once very prominent in Ancient Royal Treasures. However this stone seemingly disappears from the gemstone scene for several hundred years, reappearing only in the 19th century, when travel and technology allowed these unexplained deposits to be re discovered by the adventurers of the day. An expedition in 1934, led by the"then, "Keeper of Minerals in the British Museum, L.J. Spencer, is what set the scientific world abuzz about this strange colored glass found in the middle of the sand seas. But it wasn't until 1971, when modern science actually got to examine the terrain where this glass is found, and since that time at least 10 theories on the origin of Libyan Dessert Glass have been borne. I have found that Libyan Desert Glass is a stone that helps you to find the most elusive parts of yourselves, those parts of yourselves that might define what you call your character, and once you find that part, you have an opportunity to change it. Often times you find yourselves in repetitive behavior patterns, Libyan Desert Glass makes you aware of these patterns, in a very clear way, then clears the way for you to allow a newer pattern in to replace that old one, a new pattern for a new experience. The origins of Libyan Desert Glass have run the gamut, from a tektite with a very high silica content, to lunar volcano eruptions that fell to earth over time. When working with Libyan Desert Glass be ready to witness aspects of yourself you weren't aware you possessed, strength in the face of turmoil, calm in the chaos, contentment with peace. Libyan Desert Glass shows you your own resistance to those things you say you want, and shows you how to allow yourselves to learn a new habit, a habit of allowing peace, rather than resisting chaos. This stone that the Ancient Egyptians gave the highest regard, helps you to find the most god-like aspects within yourself, that aspect of evolving your perception which in turn gives you the super power that the ancient egyptians were hoping to attain with this stone.Working with this stone helps you to find new pieces of yourself, pieces you didn't know were there, and use them to make changes within your life, empowering you with an age old secret, the secret of re-creating yourself at will. The Libyan desert near Ras Lanouf
March, 2011
Demonstrations have given way to bloody conflict. Battle lines sway back and forth as the Benghazi-centered ragtag rebels combat Tripoli's mercenaries and loyalists. Pro-Gaddafi forces mount their first coordinated offensive, exposing the rebels as woefully untrained and unorganized. Defiance turns to anguish when casualties mount. Slivers of hope rest on defecting army generals and foreign intervention.
Photojournalist Patrick Chauvel brings us this immersive video from the rebels' front lines. "It's a very sad story," he says. "These guys are students, they're hairdressers, they're bakers, bankers, philosophers, teachers. They are no military."
Chauvel is concerned for his safety. Gaddafi loyalists target the media and could cut off any escape. Four New York Times journalists are missing at the time and an Al Jazeera cameraman dies in the days that follow. Patrick says fighting in the flat, open desert divides the rebels into two camps: lucky and unlucky. Shelling hits at random, missing by hundreds of meters one moment and striking a direct hit the next. Chauvel fears the misses are the warning shots. He plans to escape before the battle becomes a massacre.

Black Desert - Egypt - Milky Way Timelapse
There are many different worlds of nature in the deserts of Egypt (libyan desert). One part that is really spectacular is the Black Desert. In this area you will find uncountable, huge hills of sand which are covered with black, minerally pebble.
As there is no light at all, you should not watch the desert at day only, but also - and especially - at night! The starry sky is spectacular, the milky way is easy seeable with your eyes. This is what a paradise für hobby astronomers and photographers looks like.
This timelapse video shows one of the largest hills of sand in the Black Desert in a night with no clouds at all. Because of the earth's rotation is seems that the milky way is rotating majestically above the huge hill of sand. In the second half of the night the moon rises, and colors the landscape and the sky into a magical light.
Slowly this perfect night peters out and the stars slowly fade away, until the sun rises again.
I would like to thank the two bedoins which supported me on my way though the deserts!

One Man Epic: Mission Sahara
On September 19 2011, Tom Smitheringale set off on a 2,500km Egyptian odyssey in an attempt to kayak Africa's mightiest waterway, the Nile, and then travel overland on camels with the Bedouin into the remotest corners of the hauntingly beautiful Western Desert revealing the cultural and historical richness of this little known and seldom visited area of Egypt.
This 3 month journey begins in the middle of the Nubian Desert on the Sudanese/Egyptian border at the historic World Heritage site of Abu Simbel. From here Tom will kayak the length of the Nile to the Great Pyramids of Cairo visiting all the 'must-see' cultural and historic sites along its riverbanks. The expedition then restarts in Upper Egypt at the historic City of Luxor where Tom will rendezvous with his camels and Bedouin guides before heading into the shifting sand dunes of the Western Desert where traditional lifestyles have remained unchanged for centuries. The team will trek an ancient caravan route through the desert visiting a network of Oasis on their way finishing the 1,300km journey close to the Libyan border at the Eden of the Western Desert, Siwa Oasis.
A unique and unforgettable journey of discovery and transformation through the land of the Pharaohs braving dust storms and suffocating heat in one of the harshest environments on the planet.
This video showcases Tom's pre-expedition (training in Sahara) and launch (Lake Nasser and The Nile) stages.
