The event occurred on the night of May 7, when the boy's parents, both working in an IT firm in Hinjewadi, were away on night shifts. The appalling occurence was caught on Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras installed in the couple's apartment in Narhe, Ambegaon, showing the maid slapping the crying, sleepless child, and flinging him hard onto a beanbag. What is even more chilling, is that the maid appeared to be aware of the cameras, and switched off the lights before beginning her assault. Stung by the torture meted out to their child, the couple reported the matter to Dattawadi police station on May 9. The cops however, seemed far from sensitive to their plight, and the FIR was registered four days later, on May 13. Earlier, only an occurrence report had been registered. The police registered a non-cognisable offence, which meant the parents had to approach the court for direction to the police to take action against Patole. The couple hired Baby Laxman Patole (42), a resident of Ramtekdi in Hadapsar, around eight days ago, through an acquaintance, to look after their child. Speaking to Mirror on condition of anonymity, the child's father said, "There is a day care centre in our company, but since both my wife and I work night shifts as well, we decided to hire Patole. We didn't know she was torturing our son in our absence. When the matter was reported in some sections of the vernacular media, the police came under pressure to act. After the intervention of senior officers, an FIR was registered against Patole on Tuesday for offence under Section 23 (Punishment for cruelty to juvenile or child) of the Juvenile Justice (care and protection) Act and sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. Senior PI Sambhaji Nimbalkar, in-charge of Dattawadi police station, said, "We have registered a cognisable offence and arrested Patole. She will be produced before the court on Wednesday." When asked about the delay in the FIR, Nimbalkar added, "After taking orders from the court, we recorded the parents' statements and found that prima facie, it is a cognisable offence. Hence, we added the IPC and JJ Act sections against Patole." 'CASES OF TRAUMA REPORTED' It's not only maids that misbehave. Creche owners are also to be blamed. Manasi Shinde, an employee of a private firm, used to leave her oneyear- old son in a creche. "Once, I went to collect him three hours before my usual timing. I found him trapped between the legs of an inverted stool, crying himself hoarse. The owner had punished him for not sitting in one place. Soon after that, I left my job and stayed at home for my child." Similarly, 30-year-old Swapnal Warde, an advertising professional, had appointed a caretaker to aid her mother-in-law (MIL) to look after her three-year-old daughter. "One day, my MIL found the caretaker making my daughter sit in the balcony to force-feed her. She refused to acknowledge my MIL's calls asking her to let the child play and eat. I sacked her after that," she said. While leaving a child at home with a maid can lead to harrowing experiences, there are some working mothers who keep a strict check. Sheetal Joshi, a 34-year-old banker whose son is looked after by a caretaker, said, "I make it a point to come home unannounced many times. I make sure she takes the child to the play ground at a specific time so I also get a feedback from other parents regarding her behaviour during my absence." Talking about cases referred to Childline, Anuradha Sahasrabuddhe, Director, Dyandevi Childline, said, "Some years ago, a child was subjected to burns on his cheek for misbehaving. Activists have been demanding close monitoring of creches and licenses for caretakers, but nothing has been done." Childline receives many cases of trauma after a child has been ill-treated by caretakers.- published: 15 May 2014
