For a small college town, Athens has produced a surprising wealth of talent in the past 30 years alone—from R.E.M. to The B-52s, Danger Mouse to Elephant 6, Drive-By Truckers to Dream Boat, Pylon to Elf Power, Neutral Milk Hotel to Of Montreal and beyond. In part creatives are drawn to the town because of its art college, but they stay because of the cheap rent, gorgeous countryside, and easygoing demeanor of the Athens inhabitants. It soon became apparent that if you're a musician in this town, you don't just play in one band, you play in four or five. People are truly part of a revolving, evolving creative hub. Nelly: http://bit.ly/1zmHzWW For insight into this scene we spoke with R.E.M.'s Peter Buck, joined Pylon's Michael Lachowski for a nosy round his home art studio, plus Dream Boat took us on a hike around Orange Twin Records Converservation Community—a kind of quasi-commune where artists can come live, create, live off the land, play shows, and hang out with goats on the outskirts of the town. We also talked to Patterson Hood of the Drive-By Truckers, Reptar, Andrew Reiger of Elf Power, Rob Schnieder of The Apples in Stereo, Five-Eight, and Shade. But what makes this episode doubly special is that director Lance Bangs used to live in Athens in the 80s and 90s.
