1. Philippine Embassy in Brussels – official name is the Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines to the Kingdom of Belgium and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and Mission of the Philippines to the European Union. It was established on 1964, the same year that diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Belgium started on July 4th. Since its establishment, 12 ambassadors have served as the head of post. Ambassador Victoria S. Bataclan is the country’s envoy to the said post since 10 October 2011.
2. European Commission Headquarters – the European Union’s (EU) executive body representing the interest of Europe as a whole (as opposed to the interests of individual countries). Its main roles are to set objectives and priorities for action; propose legislation to Parliament and Council; manage and implement EU policies and the budget; enforce European law jointly with the Court of Justice; and, represent the EU outside Europe such as negotiating trade agreements between the EU and other countries, etc. (source: http://ec.europa.eu/about)
3. European Council Headquarters -- a summit of heads of state of member countries. Held four times a year in Brussels and attended by two representatives from each country, the meetings receive a lot of publicity from press. They are chaired by the presiding President of the Council at the time and outcomes of this meeting steer the direction for future laws and policy drafts (source: http://www.brussels.info/institutions)
4. Royal Palace – a highlight of Neo-Classical architecture and is the official home of His Majesty the King who is Belgium’s Head of State
5. Academy Palace – one of the last examples of pure classical architecture in Belgium during the 19th century. It was built to serve as the Brussels residence of Prince William of Orange, the heir to the Dutch home. Today, it is the seat of the following: ARB -- The Royal Academy of Science, Letters and Fine Arts of Belgium; KVAB – The Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts; ARMB – The French Language Royal Academy of Medicine of Belgium; KAGB – The Dutch Language Royal Academy of Medicine of Belgium; and, ARLLF – The Royal Academy of French Language and Literature
6. Infantry Memorial – a monument dedicated to the memory of Belgian soldiers who took part in World Wars I and II. It represents a symbolic column and a number of soldiers at its foot
7. Palace of Justice – a grand structure that stands at the top of Brussels, offering a great panoramic view of the city. The building has a distinctive golden dome and many columns decorating its façade. It still serves its original purpose as the high courts of Brussels
8. Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula – seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Malines-Brussels. The cathedral is the national church of Belgium where royal weddings and funerals take place. Though dating back to the 12th century, the church was granted cathedral status in 1962. Its interior is not as decorative as one would expect from a Gothic architecture but Victor Hugo described it as the “purest flowering of the Gothic style”
9. Mannekin Pis – referred to as the Peeing Boy, this tiny bronze fountain stature stands at 61 cm (24 inches). The locals have so many stories and ways of celebrating festivals with the peeing boy that it even has an outfit for every occasion
10. Atomium Brussels – created in 1958 for the Brussels World’s Fair, it is a replica of a single unit of iron crystal blown up to 165 billion times. Standing at 102 meters, each sphere is 18 meters in diameter. There are nine spheres in total connected up by tubes.

Made by filmmaker Paul L. Hoefler in the early 1940s, this portrait of the peoples of the Belgian Congo presents views of native African people, making sure to emphasize their "savage" history and customs. The film starts with members of a tribe Hoefler identifies as formerly being cannibals. The film primarily studies the Bambouri saucer-lipped tribe. The lip plate, also known as a lip plug or lip disc, is a form of body modification. Increasingly large discs (usually circular, and made from clay or wood) are inserted into a pierced hole in either the upper or lower lip, or both, thereby stretching it. The term labret denotes all kinds of pierced-lip ornaments, including plates and plugs. The Mangbettu tribe in the central Congo is also profiled. people of Central Africa living to the south of the Niam-Niam in the Welle district of Belgian Congo. They number about a million. Their country is a table-land at an altitude of 2500 to 2800 ft. Despite its abundant animal life, luxuriant vegetation and rich crops of plantain and oil-palm, the Mangbettu have been some of the most inveterate cannibals in Africa; but since the Congo State established posts in the country (c. 1895) considerable efforts have been made to stamp out cannibalism. Physically the Mangbettu differ greatly from their negro neighbours. They are not so black and their faces are less negroid, many having quite aquiline noses. The beard, too, is fuller than in most negroes. They appear to have imposed their language and customs on the surrounding tribes, the Mundu, Abisanga, &c.; Once a considerable power, they have practically disappeared as far as the original stock is concerned; their language and culture, however, remain, maintained by their subjects, with whom they have to a large extent intermixed. The men wear bark cloth, the art of weaving being unknown, the women a simple loin cloth, often not that. Both sexes paint the body in elaborate designs. As potters, sculptors, boatbuilders and masons the Mangbettu have had few rivals in Africa. Their huts, with pointed roofs, were not only larger and better built, but were cleaner than those of their neighbours, and some of their more important buildings were of great size and exhibited some skill in architecture.
Hoefler was a noted African explorer who headlined the movie Africa Speaks about an expedition to Africa in 1928, and published a book about it with the same title in 1931.
The Belgian Congo was a Belgian colony in Central Africa between 1908 and 1960 in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
Colonial rule in the Congo began in the late 19th century. King Leopold II of the Belgians persuaded the government to support colonial expansion around the then-largely unexplored Congo Basin. Their ambivalence resulted in Leopold's creating a colony on his own account. With support from a number of Western countries, Leopold achieved international recognition for a personal colony, the Congo Free State, in 1885. By the turn of the century, however, the violence used by Free State officials against indigenous Congolese[disambiguation needed] and a ruthless system of economic extraction led to intense diplomatic pressure on Belgium to take official control of the country, which it did in 1908, creating the Belgian Congo.
During the 1940s and 1950s, the Congo had extensive urbanisation, and the colonial administration began various development programmes aimed at making the territory into a "model colony". One of the results was the development of a new middle class of Europeanised African "évolués" in the cities. By the 1950s the Congo had a wage labour force twice as large as that in any other African colony.

French novelist Patrick Modiano has won the 2014 Nobel Prize in literature.
Modiano, the author of Missing Person and Lacombe Lucien – which was made into a film by Louis Malle – was the bookies favourites overnight. He beat a competitive field that included Kenyan writer Ngugi wa Thiong'o, Japanese author Haruki Murakami, Belarusian investigative journalist and author Svetlana Alexievich, and Syrian poet Adonis.
Modiano, 69, published his first novel, La Place de l'Etoile, in 1968; he won the Prix Goncourt in 1978, and over the following three decades he has confirmed his status with a celebrated body of work, including Out of the Dark and Dora Bruder. "Actually, I never thought of doing anything else," he said of his literary career in 2011 to France Today. "I had no diploma, no definite goal to achieve. But it is tough for a young writer to begin so early. Really, I prefer not to read my early books. Not that I don't like them, but I don't recognise myself anymore, like an old actor watching himself as a young leading man."
Modiano was born in a west Paris suburb two months after World War II ended in Europe in July 1945. His father was of Jewish Italian origins and met his Belgian actress mother during the occupation of Paris – and his beginnings have strongly influenced his writing. The Swedish Academy, which selects Nobel Literature winners, praised Modiano "for the art of memory with which he has evoked the most ungraspable human destinies and uncovered the life-world of the occupation".
The American authors Philip Roth and Thomas Pynchon were once again overlooked for the biggest prize in literature. Modiano takes home eight million kronor (£693,000).
