Computation Of 3D Vision In Praying Mantises
Computation Of 3D Vision In Praying Mantises
How can a praying mantis and a pair of the world's smallest 3D glasses help us understand our own vision and improve the world of robotics? Analysing how mantises see in three dimensions could give us clues about how 3D vision evolved and lead to novel approaches in implementing 3D recognition and depth perception in computer vision and robotics. A key component of the research entails presenting virtual 3D stimuli, such as moving targets within the visual field of the mantis. As a first approach, the researchers are attaching a pair of 3D glasses -- the world's tiniest - with beeswax to the mantis, and placing it in front of computer-generated images, presented on computer monitors. Injecting Computation Everywhere - SXSW Interactive 2014
Imagine a future where there's no distinction between code and data. Where computers are operated by programming languages that work like human language, where knowledge and data are built in, where everything can be computed symbolically like the X and Y of school algebra problems. Where everything obvious is automated; the not-so-obvious revealed and made ready to explore. A future where billions of interconnected devices and ubiquitous networks can be readily harnessed by injecting computation. That's the future Stephen Wolfram has pursued for over 25 years: Mathematica, the computable knowledge of Wolfram|Alpha, the dynamic interactivity of Computable Document Format, and soon, the universally accessible and computable model of the world made possible by the Wolfram Language and Wolfram Engine. Stephen will discuss the profound implications of this new future on product development, industry, and research, and demonstrate new technology that will soon be part of our present.- published: 15 May 2014

Evolutionary computation: Keith Downing at TEDxTrondheim
Keith Downing is a professor of Computer Science at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, specializing in Artificial Intelligence and Artificial Life. He has a particular interest in evolutionary algorithms, which have applications ranging from the development of the Mars Rover antenna, patented circuits, early driverless cars, to even art. For computer scientists to learn from nature, he believes there needs to be a shift in our traditional ways thinking. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations).- published: 04 Nov 2013
