Erbil International Airport, Kurdistan Region of Iraq - Unravel Travel TV
Erbil International Airport (IATA: EBL, ICAO: ORER), is the main airport of Erbil city in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Erbil International Airport is centrally located on the Silk Road of the Airways. Following the liberation of Iraq in 2003, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) decided to transform Erbil's former military base into a modern civil aviation airport to serve as a major gateway to the world. Erbil International Airport (EIA) officially opened on July 7, 2005, and it welcomed its first IATA carrier on 11th December 2006. The KRG has enacted favorable rules to attract foreign investors and to help citizens of the Kurdistan Region in exile return home. Domestic traffic, as well as regional traffic throughout the expansive Middle East, is growing. Kurdistan's great natural resources of oil, natural gas and other minerals are creating a flourishing and rapidly growing business environment. Kurdistan is previously in exile are returning, bringing with them connections to other lands. There is an ever stronger need for efficient air transport, for passengers as well as cargo. The Erbil area has a stable water supply, and is surrounded by scenic and accessible wilderness lands, with greenery, clean streams, waterfalls and caves. This stands in stark contrast to other Middle Eastern destinations, and visitors will fuel an important tourism industry in Kurdistan. These are some of the reasons that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and EIA have constructed and equipped an airport for the future, with capacity for three million passengers, and one of the world's longest runways, designed to accommodate the Airbus A380 and cargo aircraft of that class. The airport is the culmination of the vision and strategy put in place in 2003. Iraqi Flags Gone, Kurds Move Toward Independence
"The president of the Kurdish region of northern Iraq has asked his parliament to prepare for a referendum on independence, potentially paving the way for the break-up of the country. Masoud Barzani, president of the Kurdistan Regional Government, called on parliament on Thursday to form an independent electoral commission that would start organising a referendum on independence for the semi-autonomous region. "It will strengthen our position and will be a powerful weapon in our hands," he said."* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down. *Read more here from Al Jazeera: http://www.aljazeera.com/news/middleeast/2014/07/iraq-kurds-call-independence-referendum-201473125010428418.html- published: 04 Jul 2014

In his weekly televised address, Nouri al-Maliki said Kurds have taken advantage of the circumstances and expanded their grip on Iraqi lands. He also warned the Kurdistan's Regional Government against a decision to hold a referendum on the fate of Kirkuk. Kurdish politicians remain divided over Kurdistan independence
Kurdish politicians remain divided over Kurdistan independence
President of the semi-autonomous Kurdish region of Iraq - Masoud Barzani - has called on his MPs to prepare an independence referendum in a move which he sees a step closer to achieving a full Kurdish state. Iraq's five million Kurds have ruled themselves within Iraq in relative peace for the past two decades. In recent weeks Kurdish Peshmerga forces moved into Kirkuk and other disputed areas in the provinces of Nineveh and Diyala in Northern Iraq as Takfiri militants of the ISIL seized areas in the west and north of the country. However, Kurdish political parties remain to be at odds over the referendum as some have slammed the attempt to impose a transformation for pragmatic motives. They have stressed their refusal to exchange democracy for what their political rivals are calling a "national project" and pledge that national construction should be based on standards of citizenship rather than ethnicity. Meanwhile, Baghdad has rejected the planned vote for independence. Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki accused the Kurds on Wednesday of "exploiting current events in order to impose a reality" and called the move unacceptable. It is widely believed that the formation of an official Kurdish state could lead to the fragmenting of the regional order and reinforce the spread of extremism. Observers believe that it is very unlikely Iraqi Kurdistan will announce its independence anytime soon - namely due to the lack of international backing for the cause and Iraqi Kurdistan's inability to finance itself. They stress that the timing of such an independence could have great ramifications that would influence the entire region.- published: 09 Jul 2014

Iraqi PM Maliki accuses Kurds of ISIL ties
The ties between Erbil and Baghdad have deteriorated with both sides exchanging accusations.Iraqi Prime Minister - Nouri Al-Maliki - has accused the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region of becoming a safe haven for what he described as "terrorist groups fighting the central government in Baghdad". In his weekly televised speech, Maliki said that his government cannot stand idle watching "Erbil" turn into an operation center for Takfiri militants and Ba'athist terrorists". In a phone interview with Press TV, Dr. Adnan Al-Saraj, a Leading member of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's State of Law Coalition, accused Iraqi Kurdish President Massoud Barzani of involvement in a plot to fragment Iraq and to cooperate with the devil to implement his project! In what they described as the first response to Maliki's accusations, Kurdish ministers voiced their boycott of Baghdad. A spokesman for Barzani said that Maliki had become hysterical and urged him to step down.An official from the dominant Kurdistan Democratic Party declared that Kurdish ministers appointed to the Iraqi cabinet will not be going to Baghdad and nor will they be attending cabinet meetings. Barzani accused Baghdad of inciting anti-Kurdish voices, adding that Kurds maintain what he described as the right to hold a referendum on self-determination.As Iraq slips into deeper havoc the Kurds have moved their forces into Kurdish-populated areas outside their formal borders including Kirkuk - a region, which experts estimate, holds 25% of Iraq's entire oil reserves. Barzani's calls for a referendum on the independence of Iraqi Kurdistan and talks of another referendum on adding oil-rich Kirkuk to the Kurdish province have put him in a very tight spot with Baghdad accusing him of burning bridges on one hand and of being part of a conspiracy aimed at federalization of Iraq, on another.- published: 11 Jul 2014
