Everyone is allowed to use it so long as it is done in order to move towards "Peace in Every Heart" ** This is the Urdu translation of the Kena Upanishad, also known as Talvakara or Jaimini(ya) Upanishad. The script used for the TextMovies (both, 1of2 and 2of2) as well as for the translated Urdu text (posted on - http://faqirana.blogspot.com/2010/08/kena-upanishad-in-urdu-roman-script.html ) is Roman. This is an experiment in reaching out to a larger audience- most 'Net-savvy Urdu speakers do know Roman script well and I have observed a lot of them chatting in Urdu, keyed in Roman script. Perhaps the time has come for Urdu to have multiple scripts- hopefully 3: Persian, Devanagari and Roman. Feedback welcome. This is the only Upanishad for which Adi Shankara chose to write two commentaries; and for that reason, I have chosen this to be the first in the series of TextMovies on Upanishads. The word 'Upanishad' is often translated as 'sitting down near'. Upanishads are the highest philosophical treatises of ancient India, and thus the real meaning of the word is closer to 'mystic or secret or spiritual knowledge or wisdom'. The method of gaining such knowledge or wisdom involved sitting on the ground close to the teacher and listening to him; thus the word. The translation used as the base for this TextMovie is the SBE01 sacred-texts.com version of 'Sacred Books of East', edited by Max Muller. This translation carries the thread of the first known translation from Sanskrit by Dara Shikoh (the eldest son and heir-apparent of Shah Jahan, the Mughal emperor), who had completed the translation of 50 Upanishads, before he was assassinated by his youngest brother, the bloodthirsty Aurangzeb. I have used SBE01 and other English translations to then translate the Upanishad in Urdu, since my Sanskrit is not good enough for anything other than passing a middle school exam! The Kena Upanishad (Sanskrit: केन उपनिषद्, Kena Upaniṣad), or the Kenopanishad (Sanskrit: केनोपनिषद्, Kenopaniṣad) is one of the earlier, "primary" Upanishads, a genre of Hindu scriptures, commented upon by Shankara and Madhvacharya. It is associated with the Samaveda. It figures as number 2 in the Muktika canon of 108 Upanishads. The Kenopanishad derives its name from the first word Kena , meaning 'by whom'. It belongs to the Talavakara Brahmana of Sama Veda and is therefore also referred to as Talavakara Upanishad. It has four khaṇḍas (sections), the first two in verse and the other two in prose. Adi Shankara who has written commentaries on 12 Upanishads, chose to write two commentaries on Kenopanishad. One is called Kenopaniṣad Padabhāṣya and the other is Kenopaniṣad Vākyabhāṣya. Excerpt from the text (as on the blog mentioned above): Baab 1. 1. Taalib ne poochha: "Mere nafas ko sha'oor kaun deta hai? Meree saans kis ke hukm se chaltee hai? Kaun meree zaban ko quvvate guftaar deta hai? Meree aankhen, mere kaan kis khuda ke matahat hain?" 2. Murshid ne javaab diya: "Vohee hai jo kaan ka bhee kaan hai, sha'oor ka sha'oor hai, guftaar kee goyaai, saans kee saans aur chashm kee beenai bhee vohee hai. Havaase khamsa aur nafas se oopar uth kar, saahebaane daanish, apnee khudee ko tark kar, baqaa ko pohonchte hain. 3. "Voh jise aankh dekh naheen saktee, jise alfaaz bayaan kar naheen sakte, zehan paa naheen sakta. Hum usko jaante naheen, hum use samajh sakte naheen, hum use kisee ko samjhaa bhee kaise sakte hain.
