Dozens Killed in Democratic Republic of Congo Massacre For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/BBCWORLDNEWS10 Dozens of people, including women and children, have been killed in Democratic Republic of Congo's South Kivu province. The state's governor blamed the attack on a dispute over cattle. "It is Congolese (Republic of the Congo) who have carried out these attacks. It was about a dispute over cows," South Kivu governor Marcellin Cishambo told the Reuters news agency. "The problem is that everyone in this area carries a weapon." South Kivu in the DRC is home to members of a tribe who fled Burundi after the end of the 2005 civil war. However, some Congolese Bafuliru tribe locals blame rebels from Burundi's National Liberation Forces (FNL) for the attack. Burundi's military on Saturday denied its troops were operating in the war-torn east of DRC after Kinshasa-based press freedom group Journaliste en Danger (JED) accused them of going after two journalists in the area. JED said two of its reporters had been investigating whether members of Burundi's ruling party's youth wing were undergoing military training in DRC's Kivu province. "We categorically deny this report," Burundi's spokesperson Colonel Gaspard Baratuza told news agency AFP. "If any Congolese journalists have been harassed by soldiers, they are not Burundian soldiers." Burundian soldiers, he added, were only on their side of the border. Allegations that the ruling CNDD-FDD party was training its youth sector first came to light in April when an internal United Nations report was leaked. President Pierre Nkurunziza vehemently denied the allegations, ordering the top UN official out of the country. After decades of civil war, Burundi is still healing, but tensions are growing in the lead up to elections next year. Nkurunziza is expected to seek a third term in office despite a constitutional two-term limit. BREAKING NEWS - DR Congo Many killed in ethnic raid
At least 30 people have been killed in an inter-ethnic attack on a village in the South Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, say local officials. Witnesses say the dead included women and children, some killed inside a church where they had been sleeping. All the victims were of the Bafuliru ethnic background. It was not immediately clear who had carried out the attack, but the region has seen ongoing conflict between the Bafuliru and Barundi communities. A Reuters reporter said the victims had been shot, stabbed or burned in their homes. South Kivu's Interior Minister Jean-Julien Miruho told Agence France Presse news agency that the attack had likely been revenge for cattle raids. For More Latest News Subscribe us: https://www.youtube.com/user/SuperLatestWorldNews Kinshaha: At least 30 men, women and children were killed in inter-ethnic violence in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo overnight, most of them slaughtered as they slept in a church, local sources said on Saturday. The killing took place in Mutarule, about 50 kilometres (30 miles) south of Bukavu, a local official told AFP by telephone from the capital of Sud-Kivu province. The sources said the victims were ethnic Bafuliru, and most of them were killed while sleeping in a Protestant church after taking part in a parish meeting. The victims were either shot or stabbed to death. In all, "eight men, 14 women, 10 children and a soldier" were killed, said one local councillor, reporting 33 deaths. He added that 28 more people were wounded. The UN mission in DR Congo (MONUSCO) late Saturday issued a statement saying that "fierce fighting" had taken place the night before between the Bafuliru on one side and the ethnic Barundi and Banyamulenge on the other. "This violence is unacceptable and must end immediately," said Martin Kobler, head of MONUSCO. The Barundi and Banyamulenge are Tutsis originally from Burundi who have been living in Sud-Kivu for generations. There has been a conflict for a dozen years between the Bafuliru and the Barundi over property and custom issues. South Kivu's Interior Minister Jean-Julien Miruho told AFP that the attack was likely in revenge for cattle raids in the region. "It is a problem of (stolen) cattle, and one side went to seek revenge," he said. Local sources also confirmed that there had been a problem of stolen cattle in the region. UN peacekeepers have been sent to Mutarule to evacuate the wounded and help the local authorities and the Congolese army restore calm to the area. Rwanda and DR Congo 'battle over kidnapped soldier' For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/BBCWORLDNEWS10 Rwandan forces and troops from the Democratic Republic of Congo are fighting each other on the border, the Congolese information minister says. Lambert Mende told the BBC the battle began when a unit of Rwanda soldiers crossed over the border and attacked in early on Wednesday. After fighting for nearly two hours, the Rwandans kidnapped an army corporal and went home, he said. Clashes resumed when the Congolese learnt the officer had been killed. The Rwandan authorities have yet to comment on the violence. The neighbours have had a fractious relationship since the 1994 genocide when those accused of involvement in the killings of an estimated 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus set up a militia in eastern DR Congo.Mr Mende said the fighting was in Buhumba in North Kivu province. The Rwandan soldiers came over the border at about 04:30 local time (03:30 GMT), he told the BBC's Focus on Africa programme. He said the fighting broke out again in the afternoon when Congolese soldiers heard the news about their captured colleague. "There is now fighting. There are also talks - we need really to know what is happening with them," Mr Mende said. Rwanda has been accused by the UN of playing a part in the unrest in DR Congo over the years, a charge it denies. Most recently it was accused of backing a rebellion by the M23 - a mainly ethnic Tutsi movement, which was defeated by the Congolese military and a special UN brigade in November. BREAKING NEWS - Congo prisoners in mass jailbreak in Bukavu
At least 250 prisoners in the Democratic Republic of Congo have escaped in a mass jailbreak at dawn in Bukavu, an official has told the BBC. Three people died, including a guard who was overpowered as the prisoners made their escape, the official in the South Kivu governor's office said. Police are patrolling Bukavu, which is built on the shores of Lake Kivu in eastern DR Congo, looking for them. A resident told the BBC that people were hiding in their homes terrified. The BBC's DR Congo correspondent Maud Jullien says jailbreaks are fairly common in DR Congo - at least 240 prisoners escaped in another eastern town less than a year ago. A police officer told the AFP news agency that prison wardens were overcome by the inmates who "took weapons and managed to open the prison door". Residents say gunfire rang out in the early morning across the city. Civil society activists say the number of escapees could be higher as more than 1,500 inmates were inside at the time and officials estimate 80% of the prisoners escaped. DR Congo's prisons are often overcrowded and living conditions for inmates are poor. Reports say the trouble began after police fired tear gas in the crowded stadium, causing panic. More than 20 people were injured. Local fans were unhappy after the home team, ASV Club, were defeated 1-0 by Tout Puissant Mazembe from Lubumbashi. Stampedes are a frequent occurrence at mass events in the country. "Four policemen were harassed by supporters. When they fired tear gas, the stampede began, causing the deaths," the local minister for central Kinshasa, Emmanuel Akweti, told Reuters news agency. Last month, at least 14 were crushed to death at a tribute festival for popular Congolese singer King Kester Emeneya.
