Rosetta Mission: Comet Approach Maneuvers
The most difficult phase of the Rosetta mission is the final rendezvous with the fast-moving comet. The braking maneuvers taking place January-May 2014, will slow the spacecraft to 25 meters per second. As Rosetta drifts towards the heart of the comet, the mission team will try to avoid any comet dust and achieve good comet illumination conditions. The first camera images will dramatically improve calculations of the comet's position and orbit, as well as its size, shape and rotation. Since this takes place before Rosetta's cameras have imaged the comet, accurate calculations of Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko's orbit, based on ground-based observations, are essential for a successful landing in November 2014.- published: 22 May 2014

Visit my website at http://www.junglejoel.com - using gravity slingshots from Earth and Mars to reach its final destination, Rosetta traces a wandering path. The spacecraft has already completed three flybys of Earth: on March 4, 2005, November 13, 2007 and November 13, 2009 - as well as a flyby of Mars, on February 25, 2007. If that was not enough, Rosetta has also had two asteroid encounters: 2867 Steins, on September 5, 2008 and 21 Lutetia, on July 10, 2010. Rosetta is currently in hibernation mode until January 20, 2014. The space probe will rendezvous with its final destination, Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko in May of 2014 and the Philae probe will be deployed to the comet surface later, in November. Rosetta will follow the comet as it makes its closest approach to the Sun on August 13, 2015 and will continue on with the comet as it moves back towards the outer Solar System. Space probe "Rosetta" reawakens | Journal
The European spacecraft Rosetta has been reawakened after a long hibernation. The European Space Agency received a signal from the probe Monday evening. It's currently 800 million kilometers away from earth. In August, it's set to meet up with a Comet and study its surface. Researchers hope the data will tell us more about the formation of the solar system. Find out more: www.dw.de/english- published: 20 Jan 2014

ESA's Rosetta probe was successfully launched into space on 2nd March 2004 at 07.17 GMT. This transmission provides an overview of Europe's latest space exploration mission with the best pre-launch, launch and post-launch images/animations of its twelve years voyage through interplanetary space. The programme comprises of a 5 minute a-roll with split track and commentary and is complemented by a B-roll with clean international sound. The video includes: 00:20 Europe's Rosetta cometry-probe begin its travel into deep space on it mission to discoverer the origin of life with its launch on an 2 March 2005, when it was put into space onboard an Ariane 5 rocket, from Kourou. Very nice video of Ariane 5 launch. 01:51 David Southwood, ESA Director of Science, speaks about the successful launch 02:28 The ESOC operations centre in Darmstadt will be controlling Rosetta on its voyage. The first planet encounter will be in March 2005 as Rosetta fly by the Earth, which will boost it towards Mars. In February 2007 Rosetta will pass 100km from Mars making science observations. This will be followed by another swing-by of Earth, November 2007. After the 3rd Earth fly-by in November 2009, Rosetta will head towards the comet. 03:30 Rosetta will pass twice through the asteroid belt making close-up studies of one or two asteroids. 03:39 By mid-2011 ESOC controllers will start Rosetta's main engine to place it on the rendezvous course towards the comet, it will reach after three years. 03:53 Comets are believed to contain evidence of the chemical and physical conditions which led to the creation of the Sun and of the planets. Rosetta's objective is to read thee "archives". Rosetta will close in on its target in January 2014 04:22 Rosetta will then place itself in orbit in August 2014, around the Comet 67/P 04:41 Detailed maps will be taken of the Comet 04:51 In November 2014 a Lander will be descent to the comet surface. 05:10 Rira Schulz, Deputy Project Scientist, explains the problems of landing on a comet with low gravity. 05:37 The Lander is expected to operate several weeks, even months, investigating the comet. 05:52 Rosetta will continue its observations from above for over a year 06:08 In 1996 ESA's Giotto probe had started the investigation of comet Halley. 06:36 The End See more videos about the Rosetta Spacecraft: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6vzpF_OEV8mmLgrAihJJCZLEA6Y9h5Uc Date of Production: 30 March 2004 Credit: European Space Agency (ESA)- published: 10 Dec 2013

Reminder: Cassini Probe The Grande Finale & Rosetta
NASA has chosen a name for the dramatic final phase of its Saturn-studying Cassini mission, with a little help from the public. Starting in late 2016, Cassini will zip between Saturn and its innermost ring a total of 22 times in a mission phase now known as the "Cassini Grand Finale," which will end in September 2017 when the probe intentionally dives into the gas giant's atmosphere. ©2014 www.darkskywatcher.com Darkskywatchers Global Skywatch Network ©2014 Music and HD stock footage under license to Darkskywatchers Global Skywatch Network Darkskywatcher74@yahoo.com by Video Blocks @ www.videoblocks.com Royalty free stock video and audio. COMET LANDER
COMET LANDER
Rosetta - The European Space Agency's robotic spacecraft was launched in March 2004 on it`s 12 year mission with the objective of performing the worlds first detailed, long term, close-up study of a comet as it approaches and moves around the sun. The comet is named 67P/Churyumov--Gerasimenko and Rosetta will begin approaching the comet by January 2014. Rosetta has already begun to deliver data from other comets as it travels toward comet C-G. Rosetta has so far observed comets LINEAR and Tempel-1. It has also tested its instruments on the atmospheres of Earth and Mars during its flybys for gravity assists. It made the biggest headlines thus far with the flyby's and observations of the asteroids, Steins and Lutetia. Lutetia flyby and extremely detailed pictures were reported by hundreds of leading news agencies and science websites around the world. It will reach it`s main mission the comet C-G in mid-2014 where it will observe the comet for 6 months before deploying the lander. It will then continue to orbit the comet for another 11 months as it follows the comet when it gets close to the sun and likely gives off a magnificent comet tail. The firs detailed close up long term observations of a comet are intended to help form an idea of how the Solar System looked and developed before planets formed. If everything goes according to plan the ESA Rosetta spacecraft will become the first ever spacecraft to orbit a comet. The Philae lander would become the first ever spacecraft to land on a comet.
