Album: "Continuation"; R&B; Pop/Rock Post-Disco Soul Urban Philip Bailey From allmusic.com, album review by Ross Boissoneau: Expatriate Earth, Wind & Fire vocalist Philip Bailey stepped out on his own with Continuation, his first solo recording. Here Bailey got to explore some less-cluttered grooves than in EWF, and he also sang in his natural tenor rather than being limited to his falsetto. "I Know" received some air and club play, but for the most part the disc was ignored. That's too bad, because several of the songs are engaging R&B.; "Vaya (Go With Love)" is the best ballad (Bailey's supposed strength with Earth, Wind & Fire), but the concluding "The Good Guy's Supposed to Get the Girl" and "Your Boyfriend's Back" are the best matches of hook-filled melody and Bailey's soaring voice.- published: 28 Mar 2014

HQ Post Disco-Quiet Storm - Someone - El DeBarge - 1986
From 1986. HQ Quality. Album: "El DeBarge"; R&B; Post-Disco Urban Pop Quiet Storm Duke Ellington / Tennyson / Billy Towne / [Jay Graydon] From allmusic.com, album review by Jason Elias: This is the first solo album from the talented writer/producer/singer El DeBarge. Released in 1986, the self-titled album was the expected next step. After recording four albums with his siblings, the success of the 1985 hit singles "Rhythm of the Night" and "Who's Holding Donna Now" all but swung the doors open for a solo career. While the setup and idea are still exciting on paper, El DeBarge is a disappointment. That being said, there are some high points here. Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager's "Love Always" has one of Bacharach's most challenging '80s melodies. DeBarge handles the sorrowful lyrics with great pacing and delivery. While a little sappy, "Someone" attains enough momentum to be poignant. "Lost Without Her Love" offered DeBarge's best vocal of the album and has a pitch-perfect '80s L.A. pop arrangement. Unfortunately DeBarge's hits from earlier efforts seemed to point him in an odd direction. The abysmal "Who's Johnny" might have caused many to break camp with him altogether. The majority of the other tracks just don't do anything to enliven the product or accentuate his voice. The fact that DeBarge didn't have a hand in producing or writing the songs all but made this ho-hum from the start.- published: 14 Feb 2014

HQ Post Disco-Urban - The Big Guns - Heatwave - 1982
From 1982. HQ Quality. Album: "Current"; R&B; Post-Disco Contemporary R&B; Quiet Storm Urban Rod Temperton From allmusic.com, album review by Amy Hanson: With four successful albums behind them in nearly as many years, and despite the fact that they were in the beginning throes of the bitter end of the band, Heatwave brought their fifth album, Current, to bear in 1982 and scored another Top 30 U.S. hit to boot. With producer Barry Blue again at the helm and with another clutch of Rod Temperton-penned songs behind their substantial R&B; chops, Heatwave was able to add one final feather to a cap that history continues to seriously underrate. And, although the album as a whole doesn't capture the band's early, and best, intentions, it's clear that Heatwave still had a few hot shots. It is pinned down by "Lettin' It Loose," which serves up a very late-in-the-day disco with a synthesized beat and profundo bass, which brought the band into the charts for the last time in August 1982. There are several other bright moments as well, including the hit's original B-side, "Mind What You Find." The nearly instrumental "The Big Guns," meanwhile, gives great groove, while Current's closing track, "Look After Love," draws the curtain across another blue ballad. Featuring Imagination's Leee John and Ashley Ingram as guest vocalists, this song in particular emerges as one of the album's best. It's rendered even more poignant as this formidable vocal team is here only to replace the irreplaceable Johnny Wilder, paralyzed in an auto accident shortly before work began on the album. Although Current probably won't be of much interest to the casual listener, for the Heatwave aficionado this career-capper is a sweet ride through an era that spanned more than a few genres and allowed the band to flex their muscles in them all.- published: 22 Mar 2014

From 1983. HQ Quality. Album: "Jarreau"; R&B; Jazz Post-Disco Contemporary R&B; Contemporary Jazz Tom Canning / Jay Graydon / Al Jarreau From allmusic.com, album review by Richard S. Ginell: Having broken through into the pop Top Ten albums with producer Jay Graydon and Breakin' Away, Jarreau had found his commercial groove, and it was potent enough to sustain him at least through the eponymously titled follow-up album. Again, strong, often self-co-composed material, and catchy, radio-friendly arrangements with lots of synthesizers would be the strong suit of this album, front-loaded by two large-scale R&B; hits, the cheery "Mornin'" and the footstomping "Boogie Down," that would be part of his concert repertoire forever more ("Save Me" is also in their league). The backing comes from a coterie of L.A. pros who kick in more energy than what one would normally expect; it must be the material that fired 'em up. In other words, this is a really good R&B; album, almost a great one, with the one caveat being that Jarreau's unique vocal abilities aren't remotely challenged; this could conceivably have been cut by almost any skilled R&B; singer.- published: 14 Feb 2014

HQ Post Disco-Urban - Runaround Love - Gloria Gaynor - 1982
From 1982. HQ Quality. Album: "Gloria Gaynor"; R&B; Post-Disco Contemporary R&B; Soul Disco Urban O. Brown From allmusic.com, album review by Justin Kantor: Gaynor's first post-Polydor effort is a vibrant mélange of early-'80s R&B; mid-tempo grooves and pop-savvy dance tunes. Largely overseen by Ollie E. Brown, the tunes range in color from the jazzy quiet storm pleaser "Mack Side" to the patriotic "America." The standout number, however, is the unique cover of the Supremes' "Stop in the Name of Love." Aided by the affluent production of Amir Bayyan (aka Kool & the Gang founder Robert "Kool" Bell), Gaynor serves up an earnest, pleading vocal. The zesty new chorus is anthemic, and the background vocal arrangements are the kind that are both radio-friendly and dancefloor-riveting. But perhaps the most surprising entry is "Even a Fool Would Let Go," originally recorded by Dionne Warwick in 1980. A slightly country-oriented ballad, it shows a more subtly soulful and gospel-tinged side of Gaynor's abilities that brings to mind Thelma Houston. On the whole, this set is more consistent than much of the singer's Polydor catalog. Originally released on Atlantic, Hot Productions issued the album on CD in 1997 with the addition of an '80s re-recording of Gaynor's signature song, "I Will Survive." This version is notable for its understated arrangement and the melodic alterations made, though many fans of the song's powerful message will find it not nearly as inciting as the original.- published: 07 Jun 2014

From 1982. HQ Quality. Album: "Love Is Where You Find It"; R&B; Disco Funk Post-Disco Soul Urban Contemporary R&B; Glen Barbee / Dana Meyers / Charmaine Elaine Sylvers From allmusic.com: Released after This Kind of Lovin', Love Is Where You Find It finds the group continuing its hitmaking style and boasts the production work of Leon F. Sylvers III and the Solar sound. While the group's albums were never necessities, like the Temptations or to a lesser extent the Dramatics, the worth of the ballads and dance tracks often made the Whispers worth seeking out. Love Is Where You Find It is no exception. The album's biggest hits -- the polished and kinetic "In the Raw" and "Emergency" -- quickly joined the pantheon of Whispers dance classics. The near-brilliant "Turn Me Out" arguably beats them both for sheer sonic value and the witty lyrics. Unlike many of the Whispers' albums of the time, the ballads here diminish the set. The radio staple "Say Yes" may be too smooth and cloying even for Whispers devotees. Love Is Where You Find It isn't an especially strong album, but "Turns Me Out" makes it worth looking for.- published: 06 Jan 2014

HQ Post Disco-Urban - Do You Love Me? - Patti Austin - 1981
From 1981. HQ Quality. Album: "Every Home Should Have One"; R&B; Post-Disco Pop Quiet Storm Contemporary R&B; Urban Rod Temperton From allmusic.com, album review by Jason Elias: The talented Patti Austin launched a successful jazz album career on CTI by the mid-'70s. Working with Quincy Jones since 1976, Every Home Should Have One was her long-awaited solo album with Jones as a producer. The hit singles "Do You Love Me" and "Every Home Should Have One" are polished -- pleasing but derivative. Rod Temperton -- who did four songs here, including the smooth "The Genie" -- comes up with a true gem, the classic Austin and James Ingram duet "Baby Come to Me." The most telling aspect of Every Home Should Have One isn't the L.A. pop/R&B; Austin could do standing on her head, it's the most meditative offerings. A cover of Thom Bell and Linda Creed's "Stop, Look and Listen" gets an effortless treatment. The album-closing "The Island," with music from Ivan Lins and Vitor Martins and lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman, seems best suited for Austin as she gives a sensual and flawless reading. Every Home Should Have One doesn't possess Quincy Jones' all-encompassing production style of albums like The Dude and George Benson's Give Me the Night. While this seems like a debut album, it's far from it, but it's a perfect introduction to Austin and her more pop-orientated work.- published: 17 May 2014

Both "Dare Me" and "Freedom," easily the best songs here, marched straight onto the singles charts. The former was an audacious, rough-and-ready come-on draped in a samba beat, wrapped in period trimmings, and brimming with sharp vocal harmonies. The latter, on the other hand, graced the R&B; Top 30 with a quiet, soulful dream, riding a light beat and little instrumentation. Elsewhere, the band packs in the punches across a steady flow of up-tempo grooves that overlay synthesizers at almost every turn, most notably on "Twist My Arm," "Back in My Arms," and "Bodies and Souls." Listeners can only take a breather during the more restrained "Hey You" and "Contact." While it can be said that there is not one thing technically wrong with Contact, neither is there anything that stands out as representative of the band at their best. Consummate performers, the trio is in excellent voice, their harmonies as pure as always. But by 1985 they seemed to have hit a plateau, not striving to change, but apparently happy enough to add synth pop R&B; to a market already glutted with the stuff. --- From 2004. HQ Quality.
