A moment of silence is a period of silent contemplation, prayer, reflection, or meditation. Similar to flying a flag at half-mast, a moment of silence is often a gesture of respect, particularly in mourning for those who have died recently or as part of a tragic historical event.
Silent prayer and worship, including moments of silence practiced during other group activities have been practiced by Quakers for more than 300 years. Since silence contains no statements or assumptions concerning beliefs and requires no understanding of language to interpret, it is more easily accepted and used than a spoken prayer or observance when persons of different religious and cultural backgrounds participate together. In the colonial period Pennsylvania Quakers and Lenape Native Americans worshiped silently together on several occasions, yet neither group thought that this implied that they had altered their traditional belief system in doing so. Over time, the effectiveness of Quaker-style silence for non-sectarian and non-controversial public observances has led to its almost universal use in the English-speaking world as well as other plural societies. This is also the case within many institutions where diverse groups are expected to participate but not necessarily share beliefs such as in government, schools, businesses and the military.

One Minute Silence is a four-piece rap metal/nu metal band based in London. The band consists of vocalist Brian 'Yap' Barry from Templemore, Co. Tipperary, guitarist Massimo Fiocco from Limerick City, drummer Martin Davies and bass guitarist Glen Diani. The band announced its split after eight years in a press release dated 21 October 2003. The band officially reconvened without original drummer Eddie Stratton in 2011. Although the band members claimed not to be a "political band" — they are simply "political people" who are also musicians, they say — the group's lyrics have a political message which can be interpreted as generally anti-capitalist and anarchist.
One Minute Silence came together in the early 1990s when Irish vocalist Brian Barry got together with guitarist Chris Ignatiou under the name "Near Death Experience". After working with various rhythm sections, they settled with Gibraltarian Glen Diani on bass guitar and Englishman Eddie Stratton on drums. Barry had befriended Stratton before the formation of the band. The band was soon forced to change its name because of an American group who shared it, and so it became One Minute Silence. That name, originally intended to be the title of a song, was chosen to parody the practice of having a one-minute silence as a mark of respect when someone considered "important or well respected" dies. The band felt that that respect was often "displayed".
"One Minute" is a song recorded by American recording artist Kelly Clarkson taken from her third studio album, My December (2007). The song served as the album's second single in Australia on September 18, 2007 through 19 Recordings and RCA Records. Clarkson originally wrote it for her second studio album, Breakaway (2004), with songwriters Kara DioGuardi, Chantal Kreviazuk and Raine Maida; however, it did not make the final track listing. It was then reworked for My December, being produced by David Kahne, and co-produced by Jason Halbert and Jimmy Messer. "One Minute" is an alternative rock song with electropop influences, and consists of "rapid-fire give-and-take verses."
Upon its release, "One Minute" was met with positive reviews from music critics, with one considering it to be the musical highlight of My December, along with "Never Again" and "Don't Waste Your Time". Following strong radio airplay, the song debuted at number 41 in Australia, reaching its peak of number 36 a week later. No accompanying music video was recorded for the song; however, Clarkson promoted it through few live appearances, including at Daytona 500 on February 2007, and on Take 40's Live Lounge.
The minute is a unit of time or of angle. As a unit of time, the minute is equal to 1⁄60 (the first sexagesimal fraction) of an hour or 60 seconds. In the UTC time standard, a minute on rare occasions has 61 seconds, a consequence of leap seconds (there is a provision to insert a negative leap second which would result in a 59-second minute, but this has never happened in more than four decades under this system). As a unit of angle, the minute of arc is equal to 1⁄60 of a degree or 60 seconds (of arc). Although not an SI unit for either time or angle, the minute is accepted for use with SI units for both. The SI symbols for minute or minutes are min for time measurement, and the prime symbol after a number, e.g. 5′, for angle measurement. The prime is also sometimes used informally to denote minutes of time.
By contrast to the hour the minute (and the second) has not a clear historical background. What is traceable only is that it started being recorded in the Middle ages due to the ability of construction of "precision" timepieces (mechanical and water clocks). However, no consistent records of the origin for the division as 1⁄60 part of the hour (and the second 1⁄60 of the minute) have ever been found, despite many speculations.
Silence is the lack of audible sound or presence of sounds of very low intensity. By analogy, the word silence can also refer to any absence of communication or hearing, including in media other than speech and music. Silence is also used as total communication, in reference to nonverbal communication and spiritual connection. Silence also refers to no sounds uttered by anybody in a room or area. Silence is an important factor in many cultural spectacles, as in rituals.
In discourse analysis, speakers use brief absences of speech to mark the boundaries of prosodic units. Silence in speech can be due to hesitation, stutters, self-correction—or a deliberate slowing of speech to clarify or aid the processing of ideas. These are short silences. Longer pauses in language occur in interactive roles, reactive tokens, or turn-taking.
According to cultural norms, silence can be positive or negative. For example, in a Christian Methodist faith organization, silence and reflection during the sermons might be appreciated by the congregation, while in a Southern Baptist church, silence might mean disagreement with what is being said, or perhaps disconnectedness from the congregated community.

Lyrics: I'm done with yesterday, tomorrow I will drop today I cannot operate on what I can and cannot say I put my foot in it - tomorrow is another day Some you win some you lose, the fish are out of water You're bringing me down - Loser You're bringing me down - Loser I too have swallowed it, the promise of a better day And blind is one thing but now the picture is grey A little negative, but negative is how we play Some you win, some you lose The fish are out of water You're bringing me down - Loser You're bringing me down I turn it on again and you're gone I turn it on again and you're gone I turn it on again and you're gone I turn around again I turn it on again and you're gone I turn it on again and you're gone I turn it on again and you're gone Some you win, some you lose The fis...

I've considered all sides, resist the war cries
Manifested more times than we don't care to count
You don't want to go there with me, cos ill bury you
You don't want to save me; you don't want to play me
I don't want to say that, I don't want to say what
You don't want to go there, you don't want to go where
You so much as move a inch or
I don't want to say what it is, what are you thinking
You so much as move a inch or
I believe in none of the above
Have I failed to mention some of the above?
I believe in none of the above
Have I failed to reach you, failed to reach you
I've considered my side, reconsidered first prize
All about me and my and my
How to be a good man, How to be a good man where
Anybody want in? Anybody want out?
What about the whores in the Vatican selling me
You so much as move a inch or
I don't wanna bow down with you, at this altar of
I don't want to go there, I don't want to go where
You so much as move a inch or
I believe in none of the above
I believe in none of the above
Have I failed to mention some of the above?
Have I failed to reach you, failed to reach you
Ever said anyone ought to die alone?
And I've never known anyone, not a single soul
I don't know, I don't care, when I'm gone, I'm gone
Never known anyone, not a single soul
Let it go, let it go, and this world becomes
Ever said anyone ought to die alone?
Let it go, let it go, and this world becomes
I don't know, I don't care, when I'm gone, I'm gone
You so much as move
You so much as move
You so much as move
You so much as move
You so much as move
