Russian Geography Lesson 01
FULL LESSON: http://ruskyed.com/GEO/geo01a.html TRANSCRIPT: -------------------- Rusky Ed here with a challenge. Can you list the five largest cities in Russia? See how many you can come up before the end of the intro song, after which we'll get to the lesson! Most people are likely to realize that Moscow is the largest city in Russia. In fact, it has a population of about fifteen million people, making it about the same size as Los Angeles. The second largest city in Russia is Saint Petersburg and it has a population of about five million. The next three largest cities all have a population of over a million people and they are: Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, and Nizhny Novgorod. Other cities that you might have thought of include: Vladivostok, Irkutsk, Omsk, Volgograd, and Sochi, to name just a few. We begin this lesson with a blank map of Russia which looks a little something like this. As you can see, no cities, no geographical features, and not much information at all actually is shown on the map. All we see is the basic outline of a country which stretches from the Pacific Ocean to Europe. In terms of land area Russia is the largest country in the world. However, in terms of population it is only the ninth largest country. So, Russia has a lot of land, but a relatively low population density. In this lesson we will place six items on our blank map. Listed in Russian these items include: 1. Москва (Moscow) 2. Новосибирск (Novosibirsk) 3. Владивосток (Vladivostok) 4. Уральские горы (Ural Mountains) 5. Тихий океан (Pacific Ocean) 6. Озеро Байкал (Lake Baikal) And here are these places on the map. From west to east we see Moscow, the Ural Range, Novosibirsk, Lake Baikal, Vladivostok, and the Pacific Ocean in English and Москва, Уральские горы, Новосибирск, Озеро Байкал, Владивосток, and Тихий океан in Russian. As already mentioned Moscow is the largest city in Russia, but it is also interesting to point out that Lake Baikal is the largest freshwater lake on the planet and that it contains one-fifth of the world's fresh water. Further, although for the most part the English and Russian forms of the names for these places sound similar, that is not the case for the Pacific Ocean and Тихий океан, oddly enough. And now for two sample sentences: First up we have, Владивосток расположен на восточном побережье России. (Vladivostok is located on the east coast of Russia.) Key words in this sentence include: расположение - location, placement, arrangement восточный - east, eastern побережье - coast, shore, seaboard With these definitions in mind and using the proper grammatical forms of these words, we can see that: Владивосток расположен на восточном побережье России. (Vladivostok is located on the east coast of Russia.) The next sentence goes like this: Мы посетили Уральские горы в течение недели. (We visited the Ural Mountains for a week.) First of all, it should be noted that while the word mountains is capitalized in English when we write Ural Mountains, the word горы is not capitalized in Russian when we write Уральские горы. Also of special interest are the words: посетить - to visit течение - current, flow в течение - through the course of неделя - week Keeping these definitions in mind and using the appropriate forms of these words, it is apparent that: Мы посетили Уральские горы в течение недели. (We visited the Ural Mountains for a week.) By way of quick review, here are a few words and a couple sentences: 1. ещё (more) 2. вопрос (question) 3. один (one) 4. яблоко (apple) 5. красный (red) 6. большой (big) And now for the sentences: У меня ещё один вопрос. (I have one more question.) У меня большая красное яблоко. (I have a big red apple.)- published: 01 Mar 2014

FULL LESSON: http://www.ruskyed.com/GEO/geo03a.html TRANSCRIPT: -------- Rusky Ed here with another geography lesson. Look over the list of geographical locations to be covered in this lesson during the intro song. As you undoubtedly realize, Russia is a very large country. In fact, it has nine time zones.Such a large country contains many interesting geographical locations to learn about and explore and in this lesson we will take a look at six more of them! So... Давайте обсудим географию России. or Давайте поговорим о географии России. Both of which mean: Let's discuss the geography of Russia. In fact, let's do it now! As you can see on this map, from west to east we have the Caucasus Range, Saint Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Mount Narodnaya, Irkutsk, and the Kamchatka Peninsula in English and Кавказский хребет, Санкт-Петербург, Екатеринбург, Гора Народная, Иркутск, and Полуостров Камчатка in Russian. Possibly the most interesting item on this list is Mount Narodnaya which just so happens to be the highest peak in the Ural Range. Although at only 6217 feet, it's not exactly a terribly tall mountain, it is nonetheless the highest mountain in the Ural Range or in other words... Гора Народная является самой высокой вершиной в Уральском хребта. (Mount Narodnaya is the highest summit in the Ural Range.) Speaking of mountains, it only stands to reason that a large country like Russia would contain many mountain ranges and possibly the most famous of all the ranges in Russia is the Caucasus Range. Often simply called Кавказ, it may also be referred to as Кавказский хребет (Caucasus Range) or Кавказские горы (Caucasus Mountains). Moving to the opposite side of the country we have the Kamchatka Peninsula, or Полуостров Камчатка in Russian, which is famous for live volcanoes. As for cities on the list, we have Saint Petersburg, which is the second largest city in Russia, Irkutsk which is located near Lake Baikal, and Yekaterinburg, which is just east of the Ural Range. BTW, it should be noted that Saint Petersburg was at one time known as Leningrad. [Ленинград (Leningrad)] Here's the list of the six geographical locations covered in this lesson again: Кавказ (Caucasus) Санкт-Петербург (Saint Petersburg) Екатеринбург (Yekaterinburg) Гора Народная (Mount Narodnaya, 6217 feet) Иркутск (Irkutsk) Полуостров Камчатка (Kamchatka Peninsula) And now for a few easy review words and a couple sentences: человек - person, man уже - already, by now пройти - to pass, to walk, to go каждый - every, each год - year говорить - to say, to tell, to speak Our first review sentence goes like this: Ещё один год уже прошёл. (Another year has already passed.) It should be noted that прошёл is a form of пройти. Sentence two is as follows: Каждый человек будет говорить. (Each person will speak.)- published: 03 May 2014

Seventy-five percent of the remaining area of Crimea consists of semiarid prairie lands, a southward continuation of the Pontic steppes, which slope gently to the northwest from the foot of the Crimean Mountains. The main range of these mountains shoots up with extraordinary abruptness from the deep floor of the Black Sea to an altitude of 600--750 metres (1,969--2,461 ft), beginning at the southwest point of the peninsula, called c. It was believed that this cape was supposedly crowned with the temple of Artemis, where Iphigeneia is said to have officiated as priestess.[72] Uchan-su waterfall on the south slope of the mountains is the highest in Ukraine. Crimea is subdivided into 25 regions: 14 raions (districts) and 11 city municipalities, officially known as territories governed by city councils.[70] While the City of Sevastopol is located on the Crimean peninsula, it is administratively separate from the rest of Crimea and is one of two special municipalities of Ukraine. The Borders of Russia
The Borders of Russia is a photographic study of the Russian border, the longest national border in the world, and the community of the Border Guard Service tasked with its defence and patrol.
A complicated Soviet past coupled with the vast geography of Russia has made border territories a problematic area both politically and physically. These territories illustrate like no other the state of modern Russia, how it is shaping its own identity, and its relationship with the Soviet consciousness, which it seeks to both outlive and preserve.
The project has taken an approach of an ethnographical journey, an investigation of the political and cultural symbols we naturally or artificially embed in the surrounding landscapes to mark the territory with what relates to or signifies our identity.

Inger Lise HANSEN : Travelling Fields | Film exp. | hdv | color | 00:08:40 | Norvège / Russia | 2009
Synopsis
Travelling Fields focuses on a particular phenomenon occurring through a change of perspective and animated camera movements, as a way of redefining a place and its geography. Sections of the landscape are documented by moving the camera upside/down, one frame at the time, along a track. The film moves between different topographies and locations in the Kola Peninsula, Northern Russia. Shot in Northern Russia, Travelling Fields is the third film in Inger Lise Hansen's inverted perspective trilogy, following Proximity (2006) and Parallax (2009). The films focus on a particular phenomenon occurring through a change of perspective and animated camera movements, as a way of redefining a place and its geography. In these films sections of the landscape are documented by moving the camera one frame at the time, along a track. As each of the earlier films focus on one particular location, Travelling Fields offers a more complex viewing as it moves between different topographies and locations in the Kola Peninsula.

The Fortune Teller: 50 Yrs of Faggotry in 5 Mins, By Leo Herrera
Film by Leo Herrera, Decode the clips at LeoHerrera.com
ABOUT “THE FORTUNE TELLER”
The Fortune Teller is a film by gay artist/activist Leo Herrera, chronicling milestones and icons of the modern gay man. The story is told through the trance of The Fortune Teller (played by Stanley Frank) and created using archival and modern footage. The film is a documentary and time capsule, paying homage to psychedelic films of the 1960′s and the modern art of the YouTube Montage film. From Mapplethorpe to Lohanthony, Uganda to Burning Man, Vogue to Sissy Bounce, AIDS to The Berlin Patient, meticulously edited clips create a kaleidoscopic five-minute journey through more than 50 years of gay history. See the “The Fortune Teller” decoded for a visual legend to the clips.
“The Fortune Teller” is comprised of over 50 years of imagery and footage. The 5-minute clip took six months to film and assemble, and is made up of 100 carefully selected clips. The style is a take on Lana Del Rey’s “Video Games” video, or The Scissor Sister’s “Let’s Have a KiKi”. It also pays homage to some of our modern day gay “preachers,” such as Chris Crocker or Lohanthony, or Kid Fury, who, as we always have, developed ways to use technology to reach one another.
ADDING YOUR STORY
The Fortune Teller does not attempt to be an all-encompassing history; the clips in the Fortune Teller were curated based on icons and moments personally selected by Leo as they defined him as a gay man and the gay community world over.
During the next few week of Pride month it’s Leo’s hope you contribute to his project and will tell your story, adding to his, by sharing your own history with being gay, coming out, or perhaps sharing the story of someone in your life who has come out as you post this video on Facebook and Twitter.
ARTIST STATEMENT
“This film was created with the hopes that every gay man can find something to identify with. The Fortune Teller does not attempt to be an all-encompassing history; the clips in the Fortune Teller were curated based on icons and moments that personally defined me as a gay man. Mexican singer Juan Gabriel was the first gay person I identified with as a child, I’ve sat many nights laughing at Kid Fury’s preacher-like passion and razor wit, I still remember the first time I saw the androgynous Karis perform in the Scissor Sister’s Filthy/Gorgeous video and thought “I can be that?!” or the moment Hedwig sang Wicked Little Town and reminded me of the unrequited love of high school. My work in HIV Criminalization has made me see how deeply ingrained the stigma of HIV is within our community and my wild nights in San Francisco’s nightlife has shown me that a party can be a cathartic communal experience.”
“I grew up an illegal Mexican immigrant in Republican Arizona, as far from “gay” as possible. Yet, the challenges and hopes I’ve faced as a gay man are the same as all of my peers across the world, as if homosexuality transcends culture, geography and race. Homophobia is the same in New York City as it is in Russia, HIV and its stigma are as devastating in the South as they are in San Francisco, our sexual freedom is as reviled in America as in Uganda…and yet we are all moving forward on a global scale: our contributions to nightlife and the arts are as pronounced in Berlin as they are in Provincetown, the legalization of our unions is spanning continents, the unmistakable softness of our gestures transcends language. I don’t know if these universal similarities make “Gay” a culture, a race or a shared experience. What I do know is that they stir a deep pride in me that is almost religious.”

Flat Track Around the World Sample
Meet Juvie Hall, attorney, karaoke lover, and team co-captain of the Guns N Rollers in Portland’s Rose City Rollers roller derby league. Since beginning her derby journey in 2009, Juvie has experienced a major life transformation, from married practicing attorney to divorced freelance editor and roller derby team captain who lives derby practically 24-7. Amazed by the speed, magnitude, and positivity of her life changes, Juvie is setting off to travel the globe in search of the very soul of roller derby. She seeks nothing less than to discover the source of derby's power to help women completely transform their lives.
Juvie will visit derby leagues in Australia, Malaysia, Russia, Israel, France, Norway, Mexico, Brazil, and Peru in search of characters and kindred spirits who can help her distill the essence of roller derby--that certain something that crosses geographic, cultural, and economic boundaries. Getting to know players both on and off the track, she will seek to understand what derby means to each woman she meets and to learn how her international derby sisters are using their own derby experiences to improve their lives and communities.
Three years ago, Juvie would have never considered creating a documentary. Concerns about what other people might think and the hugeness of the mission would have dissuaded her from the project. But now, as Juvie's personal transformation continues and she negotiates her new and improved reality, nothing is off limits.
Juvie Hall and filmmaker Cynthia Lopez are working with an all-female crew to tell the story of the magic of roller derby through the experiences of women around the globe. Is there some core nugget of derby awesomeness that has the potential to enrich and transform the lives of women everywhere, regardless of age, class, wealth, or geography? Will Juvie discover a way to harness the transformational power of roller derby? Or will she come up empty-handed and have to let go of her dream of derby as a uniting and empowering force for women everywhere? Like all seekers, for Juvie the journey will be just as important as finding what she seeks.
This documentary aims to inspire women everywhere to start their own left-turn adventure with courage and confidence, whether on or off the flat track.
