Alfie Bass, born, Abraham Basalinsky, (10 April 1916 – 15 July 1987) was an English actor. He was born in Bethnal Green, London, the youngest in a Jewish family with ten children; their parents had left Russia many years before he was born.He appeared in a variety of stage, film, television and radio productions throughout his career. After leaving primary school in Bethnal Green at the age of 14, he worked as a tailor's apprentice, a messenger boy and a shop window display fitter, before taking to the stage. Bass's acting career began at Unity Theatre, London in the late 1930s, appearing in Plant In The Sun alongside Paul Robeson, and as the pantomime King in Babes In The Wood. After the outbreak of the Second World War, Bass joined the Middlesex Regiment as a despatch rider. Despite being kept busy with his duties, he found time to become involved in concert parties, as well as taking part in documentaries for the Army Film Unit. His stage career included plays by Shakespeare and Shaw. During the 1950s he continued to direct shows at Unity, and on one occasion appeared in court (along with Vida Hope) charged with putting on a play without a licence. His stage work also included an adaptation of Gogol's short story "The Bespoke Overcoat", transposed to the East End of London, which was filmed by Jack Clayton in 1956, and won the Oscar for best short. Bass also took over from Chaim Topol in the role of Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof on the West End stage.
Bass first appeared on film in wartime documentaries. He also appeared in a number of feature films including The Lavender Hill Mob (1951), Hell Drivers (1957), A Tale of Two Cities (1958) and Alfie (1966) starring Michael Caine and Shelley Winters. In the latter he played Harry Clamacraft, a man Alfie meets and befriends in a sanatorium. He starred in Roman Polanski's vampire film The Fearless Vampire Killers (1967) (British title The Dance of the Vampires) as innkeeper Yoine Shagal with his daughter Sarah played by Sharon Tate. In the course of the film, he and his daughter become vampires. When a maid tries to scare him off with a crucifix, he responds with "Oy, have you got the wrong vampire!". Bass also appeared in the "Pride" segment of The Magnificent Seven Deadly Sins (1971) and had a leading role in the 1977 sex comedy Come Play with Me. He has had many cameo roles, such as the Indian restaurant doorman in The Beatles' movie Help! (1965), as Clouseau's seafaring informant in Revenge of the Pink Panther (1978), and in Moonraker (1979). Bass had a small part in I Was Monty's Double as a non-speaking passenger on a train.
In his book British Film Character Actors 1982, Terence Pettigrew remembers 'there was a time when no British film seemed complete without Alfie Bass popping up in some guise of other. Basically playing the same character, he has hopped chirpily from drama to comedy and into costume pieces and back like an energised sparrow. To all of these, he has added an engaging warmth and sanguinity.'
Bass appeared as a poacher rescued by Robin in the first episode of The Adventures of Robin Hood starring Richard Greene. He appeared in The Army Game (1957–61), a British TV comedy series, as Private Montague 'Excused Boots' Bisley, and its sequel Bootsie and Snudge from 1960-63 (there was also a one series revival in colour in 1974) working at a Gentleman's Club with Bill Fraser as Snudge and Clive Dunn. Bass played the character in another spin-off, Foreign Affairs in 1964. Bass also played Lemuel "Lemmy" Barnet in the third and fourth series of the landmark 1950s science fiction radio series Journey into Space. He continued working until the turn of the 1980s. Later work included roles in the TV series Till Death Us Do Part, Minder, and Are You Being Served? as Mr. Goldberg, the second in a series of replacements for Arthur Brough's Mr. Grainger character (the first being James Hayter's Mr. Tebbs). As in the Mr. Goldberg role, he often emphasised his Jewish background in on-screen characterizations. He played a memorable Silas Wegg in the BBC's 1976 adaptation of Dickens's Our Mutual Friend. He also guest starred in two episodes of the British comedy television The Goodies, in which he appeared as the "Town Planner" in Camelot, and as the Giant in The Goodies and the Beanstalk. Bass died of a heart attack on 15 July 1987 in Barnet, Greater London. His last home was in Well End, a suburb of Borehamwood, Hertfordshire.

A few of the stars of hit Granada sitcom The Army Game released records in the late 50s and early 60s to cash in on their characters and popularity. This one is by Alfie Bass, who played Private Montague 'Bootsie' Bisley in the show.
Villikins and His Dinah is an old folk song that dates back to 1855.
The tracks have been put on the wrong way round, Villikins and His Dinah should be first but I've mistakenly put Rat Catchers Daughter in first.

The Army Game was Granada Television's hit sitcom of the 50s which ran from 1957 till 1961. The cast changed over the years with the first Sergeant-Major played by William Hartnell as SM Bullimore who was replaced later by Bill Fraser as SM Claude Snudge before Hartnell returned for the last series when Boostie & Snudge left for thier own spin-off series. The motley crew originally included Charles Hawtrey as Private 'Professor' Hatchett, Bernard Bresslaw as Private 'Popeye' Popplewell, Norman Rossington as Private 'Cupcake' Cook, and Corporal Springer played by Michael Medwin. Hawtrey left after the second series and was replaced by Alfie Bass as Private 'Montague 'Bootsie' Bisley, his nickname coming from him being 'Excused Boots' due to his poor feet. Bresslaw and Rossington also left to replaced by Ted Lune as Private Leonard Bone and Mario Fabrizi as Lance-Corporal 'Moosh' Merriweather. Medwin's Corporal Springer was also replaced by Harry Fowler as Corporal 'Flogger' Hoskins. Dick Emery replaced Alfie Bass when Bootsie & Snudge left for their own series.
The huge popularity of the series led to a spin-off film in 1958 called 'I Only Arsked' which was the catchprase of Bernard Bresslaw's character 'Popeye' Popplewell, the slow-witted private. There was also a boardgame of The Army Game and anotehr called I Only Arsked based around Bresslaw's character again, which was one of the most popular of the early years before Bootsie & Snudge.
This record features Michael Medwin (Corporal Springer), Bernard Bresslaw (Popplewell) and Alfie Bass (Bootsie) from the series. Neither Hartnell nor Fraser play the Sergeant-Major though, who is instead played as an unidentified character by Leslie Fyson, who didn't feature in the TV series.
The A Side was the theme tune to the series, although the television show had no lyrics which have been added for this record. The B Side is just an army-themed marching song.
Bresslaw got the most of a recording career out of it, releasing three singles and an EP in 1858 and 1959 (all available on my channel). Alfie Bass released one other record and Ted Lune did one, although he didn't participate in this one (both available on my channel).

The old story as told by Alfie Bass in the style of his character Bootsie from popular Granada sitcoms The Army Game and sequel Bootsie & Snudge. Released in 1963 when Bootsie & Snudge was still on air, two stories for children were released by Bass as Boostie (although using Bootsie's vernacular he does speak with a more cut-glass straight voice for clarity), the first was 'Boostie and the Beast' and the second was 'Bootserella', which had also been made as a short pantomime with the cast of The Army Game, including Bass, for the Chelsea At Nine television show in 1960, which is available as an extra on the Army Game DVD from Network.
Both the 1963 'Storytime Discs' by Bass for children are available on my channel and as far as I can tell were the only two made. The rear sleeve notes say they are £the First [and second] in a new series of records for the young, the old, and the in between" but I don't know if there were any other recorded by anyone else either. Both were wrritten by Bootise & Snudge scriptwriter Barry Took with music by Dino Castro and "Alfie Bass records by kind permission of Granada Television". They didn't get a glowing review in Gramophone magazine so I expect any futher records were likely cancelled.

In the latter he played Harry Clamacraft, a man Alfie meets and befriends in a sanatorium. He starred in Roman Polanski's vampire film The Fearless Vampire Killers (1967) (British title The Dance of the Vampires) as innkeeper Yoine Shagal with his daughter Sarah played by Sharon Tate. In the course of the film, he and his daughter become vampires. When a maid tries to scare him off with a crucifix, he responds with "Oy, have you got the wrong vampire!". Bass also appeared in the "Pride" segment of The Magnificent Seven Deadly Sins (1971) and had a leading role in the 1977 sex comedy Come Play with Me. He has had many cameo roles, such as the Indian restaurant doorman in The Beatles' movie Help! Bass played the character in another spin-off, Foreign Affairs in 1964. Bass also played Lemuel "Lemmy" Barnet in the third and fourth series of the landmark 1950s science fiction radio series Journey into Space. He continued working until the turn of the 1980s. Later work included roles in the TV series Till Death Us Do Part, Minder, and Are You Being Served? as Mr. Goldberg, the second in a series of replacements for Arthur Brough's Mr. Grainger character (the first being James Hayter's Mr. Tebbs). As in the Mr. Goldberg role, he often emphasised his Jewish background in on-screen characterizations. He played a memorable Silas Wegg in the BBC's 1976 adaptation of Dickens's Our Mutual Friend. He also guest starred in two episodes of the British comedy television The Goodies, in which he appeared as the "Town Planner" in Camelot, and as the Giant in The Goodies and the Beanstalk. The old story as told by Alfie Bass in the style of his character Bootsie from popular Granada sitcoms The Army Game and sequel Bootsie & Snudge. Released in 1963 when Bootsie & Snudge was still on air, two stories for children were released by Bass as Boostie (although using Bootsie's vernacular he does speak with a more cut-glass straight voice for clarity), the first was 'Boostie and the Beast' and the second was 'Bootserella', which had also been made as a short pantomime with the cast of The Army Game, including Bass, for the Chelsea At Nine television show in 1960, which is available as an extra on the Army Game DVD from Network. The cast changed over the years with the first Sergeant-Major played by William Hartnell as SM Bullimore who was replaced later by Bill Fraser as SM Claude Snudge before Hartnell returned for the last series when Boostie & Snudge left for thier own spin-off series. The motley crew originally included Charles Hawtrey as Private 'Professor' Hatchett, Bernard Bresslaw as Private 'Popeye' Popplewell, Norman Rossington as Private 'Cupcake' Cook, and Corporal Springer played by Michael Medwin. Alfie Bass, born, Abraham Basalinsky, (10 April 1916 – 15 July 1987) was an English actor. He was born in Bethnal Green, London, the youngest in a Jewish family with ten children; their parents had left Russia many years before he was born.He appeared in a variety of stage, film, television and radio productions throughout his career. After leaving primary school in Bethnal Green at the age of 14, he worked as a tailor's apprentice, a messenger boy and a shop window display fitter, before taking to the stage. Bass's acting career began at Unity Theatre, London in the late 1930s, appearing in Plant In The Sun alongside Paul Robeson, and as the pantomime King in Babes In The Wood.
After the outbreak of the Second World War, Bass joined the Middlesex Regiment as a despatch rider. Despite being kept busy with his duties, he found time to become involved in concert parties, as well as taking part in documentaries for the Army Film Unit. His stage career included plays by Shakespeare and Shaw. During the 1950s he continued to direct shows at Unity, and on one occasion appeared in court (along with Vida Hope) charged with putting on a play without a licence. His stage work also included an adaptation of Gogol's short story "The Bespoke Overcoat", transposed to the East End of London, which was filmed by Jack Clayton in 1956, and won the Oscar for best short. Bass also took over from Chaim Topol in the role of Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof on the West End stage.
Bass first appeared on film in wartime documentaries. He also appeared in a number of feature films including The Lavender Hill Mob (1951), Hell Drivers (1957), A Tale of Two Cities (1958) and Alfie (1966) starring Michael Caine and Shelley Winters. He starred in Roman Polanski's vampire film The Fearless Vampire Killers (1967) (British title The Dance of the Vampires) as innkeeper Yoine Shagal with his daughter Sarah played by Sharon Tate. In the course of the film, he and his daughter become vampires. When a maid tries to scare him off with a crucifix, he responds with "Oy, have you got the wrong vampire!". Bass also appeared in the "Pride" segment of The Magnificent Seven Deadly Sins (1971) and had a leading role in the 1977 sex comedy Come Play with Me. He has had many cameo roles, such as the Indian restaurant doorman in The Beatles' movie Help! (1965), as Clouseau's seafaring informant in Revenge of the Pink Panther (1978), and in Moonraker (1979). Bass had a small part in I Was Monty's Double as a non-speaking passenger on a train.
Bass appeared as a poacher rescued by Robin in the first episode of The Adventures of Robin Hood starring Richard Greene. He appeared in The Army Game (1957–61), a British TV comedy series, as Private Montague 'Excused Boots' Bisley, and its sequel Bootsie and Snudge from 1960-63 (there was also a one series revival in colour in 1974) working at a Gentleman's Club with Bill Fraser as Snudge and Clive Dunn. Bass played the character in another spin-off, Foreign Affairs in 1964. Bass also played Lemuel "Lemmy" Barnet in the third and fourth series of the landmark 1950s science fiction radio series Journey into Space. He continued working until the turn of the 1980s.
Later work included roles in the TV series Till Death Us Do Part, Minder, and Are You Being Served? as Mr. Goldberg, the second in a series of replacements for Arthur Brough's Mr. Grainger character (the first being James Hayter's Mr. Tebbs). Dunn resumed his acting career after the army, mainly in Repertory theatre, and soon made his first television appearance. In 1956 and 1957, Dunn appeared in both series of The Tony Hancock Show and the army reunion party episode of Hancock's Half Hour in 1960. In the 1960s he made many appearances with Tony Hancock, Michael Bentine, Dora Bryan and Dick Emery, among others, before winning the role of Jones in Dad's Army in 1968.
From early on in his career, his trademark character was that of a doddering old man. This first made an impression in the show Bootsie and Snudge, a spinoff from The Army Game. Dunn played the old dogsbody Mr Johnson at a slightly seedy gentlemen's club where the characters Pte. "Bootsie" Bisley (Alfie Bass) and Sgt. Claude Snudge (Bill Fraser) found work after leaving the Army.
In 1967 he made a guest appearance in an episode of The Avengers, playing the proprietor of a toy shop in "Something Nasty in the Nursery".
Dunn was one of the younger members of the Dad's Army cast when, at 48, he took on the role of the elderly butcher whose military service in earlier wars made him the most experienced member of the Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard, as well as one of the most decrepit. Jack Haig and David Jason had previously been considered for the role.[7]
Dunn's staunch socialist beliefs often caused him to fall out with Arthur Lowe, who played Captain Mainwaring and who was an active Conservative. When Dunn was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1975, it was reported that Lowe would only accept a higher-rated honour from the Queen.[8]
After Dad's Army ended, Dunn capitalised on his skill in playing elderly character roles by playing the lead character Charlie Quick in the slapstick children's TV series Grandad, from 1979 to 1984 (he played the caretaker at a village hall, and sang the lyrics in the theme).[9] He had previously had a number one hit single with the song "Grandad" on his 51st birthday in January 1971, accompanied by a children's choir. The song was written by bassist Herbie Flowers. He performed the song four times on Top of the Pops. The B-side of "Grandad", "I Play The Spoons", also received considerable airplay. After the cancellation of Grandad in 1984, he effectively disappeared from the screen, retiring to Portugal.[10] Following the success of the "Grandad" record, Dunn released several other singles.

In the 1960s he made many appearances with Tony Hancock, Michael Bentine, Dora Bryan and Dick Emery, among others, before winning the role of Jones in Dad's Army in 1968.
From early on in his career, his trademark character was that of a doddering old man. This first made an impression in the show Bootsie and Snudge, a spinoff from The Army Game. Dunn played the old dogsbody Mr Johnson at a slightly seedy gentlemen's club where the characters Pte. "Bootsie" Bisley (Alfie Bass) and Sgt. Claude Snudge (Bill Fraser) found work after leaving the Army.
In 1967 he made a guest appearance in an episode of The Avengers, playing the proprietor of a toy shop in "Something Nasty in the Nursery".
Dunn was one of the younger members of the Dad's Army cast when, at 48, he took on the role of the elderly butcher whose military service in earlier wars made him the most experienced member of the Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard, as well as one of the most decrepit. Jack Haig and David Jason had previously been considered for the role.[7]
Dunn's staunch socialist beliefs often caused him to fall out with Arthur Lowe, who played Captain Mainwaring and who was an active Conservative. When Dunn was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1975, it was reported that Lowe would only accept a higher-rated honour from the Queen.[8]
After Dad's Army ended, Dunn capitalised on his skill in playing elderly character roles by playing the lead character Charlie Quick in the slapstick children's TV series Grandad, from 1979 to 1984 (he played the caretaker at a village hall, and sang the lyrics in the theme).[9] He had previously had a number one hit single with the song "Grandad" on his 51st birthday in January 1971, accompanied by a children's choir. The song was written by bassist Herbie Flowers. He performed the song four times on Top of the Pops. The B-side of "Grandad", "I Play The Spoons", also received considerable airplay. After the cancellation of Grandad in 1984, he effectively disappeared from the screen, retiring to Portugal.[10] Following the success of the "Grandad" record, Dunn released several other singles.

Epifania Parerga wird nach dem Tode ihres Vaters als Erbin seiner Firma die reichste Frau der Welt. Sein Letzter Wille macht für Epifanias Heirat allerdings zur Bedingung, dass der Bräutigam die Summe von 500 Pfund binnen drei Monaten zu 15.000 Pfund vermehren muss. Sie heiratet mit einem Trick den Tennisspieler Alastair, indem sie ihm erst 500 Pfund Aktien leiht und diese dann für 15.000 zurückkauft; die Ehe scheitert jedoch bald mit dessen Affäre mit Polly Smith. Daraufhin versucht Epifania, sich in der Themse zu ertränken, sie wird aber von dem gutmütigen Arzt Dr. Ahmed El Kabir gerettet. Sie fasst nun den Entschluss, den Doktor zu heiraten, dieser sorgt sich jedoch nur um seine Patienten, die er in einer schlecht ausgestatteten und heruntergekommenen Praxis behandelt. Nach mehreren gescheiterten Versuchen, den Doktor für sich zu gewinnen, eröffnet dieser Epifania den Letzten Willen seiner Mutter: die künftige Ehefrau muss drei Monate lang mit lediglich 35 Schilling auskommen. Sollten nun beide in der Lage sein, den letzten Willen ihres jeweiligen Erblassers zu erfüllen, wollen sie heiraten.
Die Millionärin lässt sich in einer italienischen Nudelmanufaktur anstellen und macht aus ihr nach drei Monaten tatsächlich ein erfolgreiches Geschäft (sie kauft sie schlussendlich sogar). Dr. Kabir jedoch ist bestrebt, die 500 Pfund loszuwerden, und er schafft dies auch, indem er sie verschenkt, woraufhin Epifania verzweifelt droht, den gesamten Vorstand ihrer Firma zu entlassen und in ein tibetanisches Kloster zu ziehen. Ihr Direktor Juliues Sagamore versucht, seinen Posten zu retten, indem er Dr. Kabir von einer Heirat überzeugt und für 15.000 Pfund einige Papiere mit Wundermitteln aus Dr. Kabirs Praxis aufkauft.
