The Fourth Estate: A Novel on Media Empires, Based on Rupert Murdoch & Robert Maxwell (1996)
The Fourth Estate: A Novel on Media Empires, Based on Rupert Murdoch & Robert Maxwell (1996)
The Fourth Estate is a 1996 novel by Jeffrey Archer. It chronicles the lives of two media barons, Richard Armstrong and Keith Townsend, from their starkly contrasting childhoods to their ultimate battle to build the world's biggest media empire. The book is based on two real life media barons - Robert Maxwell and Rupert Murdoch, who fought to control the newspaper market in Britain. (Murdoch had bought The Sun and News of the World and later Times Newspapers Ltd and Maxwell bought the Daily Mirror and the other newspapers in its group.). The concept of the fourth estate is in essence the press as a watchdog on other powerful institutions or "estates", the original three estates in England and later the United Kingdom being the Lords Spiritual (of the Church of England), the Lords Temporal, and the commons. The fourth estate is charged with keeping an honest watch on activities of the other states and itself. These duties would help democratic societies function properly, openly, and honestly. Debate still flourishes as to whether or not this ever operated (or operates) as it was intended. It also shows a battle between two strong characters from differing backgrounds, who are willing to take endless risks. Sarah Lyall, in The New York Times, thought the work contained "leaden dialogue", but despite the "tantalizing echoes" of Armstrong and Townsend's real life models, the two men "seem about as vivid as bureaucrats in a wire-service story". Hugo Barnacle found evidence of a "dry sense of humour", but asserted that "Archer doesn't do insight or atmosphere, and gives the imagination very few cues." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fourth_Estate_(novel) Ian Robert Maxwell, MC (10 June 1923 -- 5 November 1991) was a Czechoslovakian-born British media proprietor and Member of Parliament (MP). He rose from poverty to build an extensive publishing empire. His death revealed huge discrepancies in his companies' finances, including the Mirror Group pension fund, which Maxwell had fraudulently misappropriated. He escaped from Nazi occupation, joining the Czechoslovak Army in exile in World War II and then fighting in the British Army where he was decorated. After the war he worked in publishing, building up Pergamon Press to a major publishing house. After six years as an MP during the 1960s, he again put all his energy into business, successively buying the British Printing Corporation, Mirror Group Newspapers and Macmillan, Inc, among other publishing companies. He had a flamboyant lifestyle, living in Headington Hill Hall in Oxford from which he often flew in his helicopter, and sailing in his luxury yacht, the Lady Ghislaine. He was notably litigious and often embroiled in controversy, including about his support for Israel at the time of its War of Independence in 1948. In 1989, he had to sell successful businesses including Pergamon Press to cover some of his enormous debts, and in 1991 he was found dead, floating in the Atlantic Ocean having apparently fallen overboard from his yacht. He was given what amounted to a state funeral in Israel. His death triggered the collapse of his publishing empire as banks called in loans. His sons briefly struggled to keep the business together, but failed as the news emerged that Maxwell had stolen hundreds of millions of pounds from his own companies' pension funds. The Maxwell companies applied for bankruptcy protection in 1992. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Maxwell- published: 24 Feb 2014

Cloud Chamber
Cloud Chamber
The trajectories of individual charged particles leave behind cloudy trails as they ionize the cooled, supersaturated air-alcohol vapor inside this diffusion cloud chamber. Alpha particles from the radioactive decay of an inserted 2% thorium alloy rod form dense condensation trails nearby. Farther from the rod (beyond 10 cm or so) various types of charged particles leave evidence of their activity, including alpha particles (dense tracks, perhaps from the decay of radon isotopes), muons and energetic electrons (faint, seemingly straight tracks), and relatively low-energy electrons and beta particles (faint, tangled tracks). This movie shows a basic, qualitative demonstration of the presence of subatomic particles; techniques to more accurately identify and measure individual subatomic particles are possible with this apparatus. The cloud chamber was first developed by C.T.R. Wilson around the turn of the 20th century to study optical phenomena associated with mist and clouds (he received the Nobel Prize in 1927). When charged particles ionize a supersaturated vapor, a trail of ions is left in the path of the particles. The ions act as condensation nuclei for the alcohol to condense on, and a thin line of fine droplets is formed in the path of each particle. The range of the alpha particles from the thorium source is about 4 cm. As the alpha traverses its path, it slows down gradually and becomes more heavily ionizing by virtue of the fact that it spends more time in the vicinity of air molecules in its path. Evidence for this can be seen by observing that the tracks become denser with increasing distance from the source. This particular diffusion cloud chamber was built by Supersaturated Environments of Madison, WI (http://www.cloudchambers.com). Dry ice pellets under the chamber floor help to create a steep temperature gradient from top to bottom. Felt strips along the top of the chamber are soaked with 95% ethanol. The viewing area is 51 square centimeters, with inscribed "+" marks every 10 centimeters. The special slide inserted into the Kodak Ektagraphic III projector saves the viewing audience from unnecessary glare. REFERENCES * W. Sitcoms as a Tool for Foreign Language Teaching
Can sitcoms be used in the classroom to teach English as a foreign language? For what reasons? In this video, I try to answer these questions and give examples for how sitcoms can be integrated into foreign language teaching. Overview of Some Nutritional Approaches to Cancer
Overview of Some Nutritional Approaches to Cancer
http://doctoryourself.com/cancer_2.html http://www.domicileparismassage.com Overview of Some Nutritional Approaches to Cancer 'People with cancer are fairly often cured for no known reason. This is called spontaneous remission, and it happens every day. Somehow, the body has destroyed the cancer by itself. Anything we can do to encourage this is most worthwhile. One way we may be able to assist the body is with vitamins and other nutrients. There are several nutritional aspects to look at in cancer treatment. One of the most important is vitamin C. VITAMIN C AND COLLAGEN Vitamin C is essential to the formation of collagen, the protein "glue" that holds our cells together. Think of cells in a cell tissue like bricks in a wall. The strength of a brick wall is not truly in the bricks, for a stack of bricks can easily be pushed apart. So might a group of cells. Collagen is the "mortar" that binds your cells together, just as mortar binds bricks together. If collagen is abundant and strong, your cells hold together well. If cells stick together, tumors have a tough time spreading through them. Strong collagen can thereby arrest the spread of cancer. Cancer cells secrete a substance called hyaluronidase, which helps them eat away at collagen and break out into the rest of the body. This is described in great detail in the book Hyaluronidase and Cancer, by Ewan Cameron, M.D., Pergamon Press, 1966. Dr. Cameron, in a now famous collaboration with Linus Pauling, Ph.D., has offered evidence that high vitamin C levels maximize collagen production. If cancer cells are going to try to spread by destroying a person's collagen, it just makes sense to make lots more collagen to keep them from doing it. To do this, a person fighting cancer probably needs enormous amounts of any substance that helps make collagen. One such substance is vitamin C. Curiously enough, persons with cancer commonly have exceptionally LOW levels of vitamin C in their bodies. This might help explain why their collagen has not been able to prevent cancer from spreading. There is nothing to lose and everything to gain by trying regular high doses of vitamin C with any cancer patient. VITAMIN C AND THE IMMUNE SYSTEM Another reason to use vitamin C in cancer treatments is that vitamin C helps strengthen the immune system. Maximum immune function is vital if we want the body to kill cancer. Yet medical treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy actually weaken the immune system a great deal. There are, then, really two reasons to bolster immunity with vitamin C. First, large quantities of the vitamin often enable a person to more easily tolerate large doses of radiation and chemotherapy, with far fewer side effects. Second, stronger immune function can only help the patient to fight the disease better in general. VITAMIN C AND PAIN RELIEF In England, it is not uncommon for terminally ill patients to receive narcotics as strong as heroin to ease their pain. One side benefit of vitamin C studies at Vale of Leven Hospital in Scotland was profound pain relief. Patients given ten grams (ten thousand milligrams) of intravenous vitamin C each day had greatly reduced pain even after the narcotic was discontinued (Cancer and Vitamin C, by Ewan Cameron, M.D. and Linus Pauling, Ph.D., Warner Books, 1981). ADMINISTRATION OF VITAMIN C Vitamin C is most effective given intravenously. Padayatty et al. Intravenously administered vitamin C as cancer therapy: three cases.
