Doncaster Belles vs Liverpool 0-9, FAWSL Goals & Highlights
Liverpool Ladies manager Matt Beard was delighted with his side's performance as they beat Doncaster Rovers Belles 9-0. Natasha Dowie's hat-trick helped inspire Liverpool's emphatic victory. Fara Williams netted two, with other goals coming from Gemma Bonner, Louise Fors, Nicole Rolser and Kate Longhurst. Victoria Williams was dismissed in the opening five minutes for Doncaster. Beard said: "In the first half, we played some fantastic football. We were ruthless in front of goal and we're very pleased with the win. "It's important we keep our noses out in front. Arsenal are in very good form at the moment and Bristol have got five tough games on the bounce in 15 days, so we keep putting the pressure on them and that's all I can ask the players to do." The Liverpool manager believes the referee made the correct decision in sending off Williams early on. He said: "She's denied our player a goal-scoring opportunity and unfortunately it's the letter of the law." Within the opening three minutes, Liverpool took the lead. Amanda Da Costa struck the crossbar, but the ball fell to Liverpool captain Bonner and she struck home from 12 yards. Minutes later, Victoria Williams received a straight red for bringing down Rolser in the area. Fors (6) stepped up and sent Nicola Davies the wrong way to extend the visitors' lead. Dowie (21) extended the visitors lead with two goals in two minutes. The striker finished off a flowing move to make it three. Only a minute later and Da Costa was fouled in the box, resulting in a penalty. Dowie (22) this time stepped up and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner. Williams (32) got on the score-sheet, prodding the ball into the bottom corner, to give Liverpool a five-goal lead. Five became six, as the midfielder (36) scored again less than five minutes later. Liverpool's dominance continued as Dowie (40) sealed her hat-trick just before the break. Rolser pulled the ball back for the striker to expertly place the ball into the bottom corner. After the break, Williams had the perfect opportunity to complete her hat-trick, however her shot went straight into the arms of Davies. Doncaster started to come back into the game. Ashleigh Mills latched on to Sue Smith's perfectly weighted through-ball, but the winger couldn't control in the wet conditions Just after the hour-mark, Belles striker Bethany England received lengthy treatment and was eventually carried off on a stretcher with what looked like a broken leg. After missing two earlier attempts, Rolser (75) finally scored Liverpool's eighth. Substitute Longhurst (90+4) bagged a goal to complete the scoring. Doncaster Rovers Belles manager John Buckley was unsurprisingly extremely disappointed with his side's performance. He said: "I thought in the first half we were shambolic. We weren't good enough for them, or me. At the end of the day, being 7-0 down at half time, I have to carry the can. "I refuse to accept that they don't know what they're doing with certain things. Too many players didn't want the ball in the first half. Liverpool made us look WSL2 tonight." The manager had no complaints over Williams' early sending off. He added: "It was a penalty kick. She caught her and there is no point having a go at the referee. "I thought second half we dug in a bit, and we could maybe have got a goal but, other than that, I am massively disappointed." ***** Line-ups: Doncaster Rovers Belles (4-5-1): Nicola Davies; Lyndsey Cunningham, Leandra Little (c) (Julie Melrose), Victoria Williams, Naomi Chadwick (Lauren Cresswell); Ashleigh Mills, Rhiannon Roberts, Kasia Lipka, Sue Smith, Millie Bright; Bethany England (Danielle Cox). Women's football took centre stage in London on Friday as The FA celebrated 20 years of running the female game in England. The 15th annual FA Women's Football Awards honoured some key figures both past and present. Gillian Coultard, the first England Women's player to make 100 international appearances, was presented with a commemorative gold cap, as was current vice-captain Alex Scott, after she reached the landmark against Russia in the summer. Women's football was initially under the auspices of the Women's Football Association (WFA) and by way of thanking them for their huge role in development the game, former WFA members Pat Gregory and Linda Whitehead were presented with a special Wembley Stone. But Natasha Dowie was the day's big winner. After helping fire Liverpool to The FA WSL crown, their first-ever national title, the striker collected the League's Top Goalscorer and also picked up the prestigious Players' Player of the Year Award, voted for by her peers and presented by Great Britain's Olympic silver medallist Beth Tweddle MBE. Reds boss Matt Beard was named FA WSL Manager of the Year, with Sunderland's Mick Mulhern receiving the accolade in the Premier League. WSL runners-up Bristol Academy are the FA Club of the Year for the second time and Steph Houghton's strike against Lincoln was voted the Goal of the Year. Kelly Simmons, The FA's Head of Women's Football, said of the day: "By its very nature, an awards ceremony recognises individual people and clubs. "However, everyone at The Football Association is aware that this was a celebration for women's football. "Today we celebrated the women's game over the past 20 years and beyond -- as well as specific achievements from this season. "It was also important to stress that 20 years only signifies the start of The FA's work to develop women's football and we have a long way to go." The final accolade of the afternoon was the Special Achievement Award, presented to Dawn Barnard from Essex for her outstanding service to the women's game since 1986. Barnard formed Chelmsford City Ladies she also formed and ran both the Essex County Girls' and Women's Leagues and later became Secretary of the Essex County Women's Football League. In 2011 she was awarded The FA's Outstanding Contribution to Grassroots Football award and was a regional winner in the Unsung Hero Category of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards. And she received an MBE earlier this year for services to football. Liverpool 4-3 Chelsea, FAWSL Goals & Highlights
A late Nicole Rolser goal earned Liverpool a dramatic victory against Chelsea. The league leaders fought back from 2-0 and 3-2 down to eventually claim the points and keep their title challenge alive. "We don't do things the easy way," a relieved Reds' manager Matt Beard said afterwards. "The goals we gave away were sloppy and we know we need to improve defensively. "What I can't fault is the spirit we showed. We never gave up and got what we deserved." Chelsea were two goals ahead inside seven minutes. A mix up between Liverpool left-back Corina Schroder and goalkeeper Sarah Quantrill allowed Swedish striker Sofia Jakobsson to capitalise. The home side were still recovering from that setback when the advantage was doubled. A swift Chelsea counter-attack set Eniola Aluko clear and the England striker clinically found the bottom corner. Liverpool should have been back in the contest on 17 minutes but Louise Fors blasted over. They did not have to wait long to alter the score as shortly after a Fara Williams' free-kick eluded Carly Telford in the Chelsea goal and bounced in. It was nearly 2-2 when Da Costa side-footed wide. Going the other way, Chelsea began to get frustrated by the home team's offside trap. The second half started slowly until Rolser's tumble in the area led to unanswered Liverpool appeals for a penalty. However, Liverpool were soon celebrating as a corner from Fors was headed towards goal by Gemma Bonner and Rolser forced it in. Parity was short lived. After Natasha Dowie had been superbly foiled by Telford, Chelsea broke and Jakobsson's cross was headed into her own net by Becky Easton. With a dozen minutes remaining it seemed like Liverpool's third league defeat of the season was inevitable. Instead, the Merseysiders rallied and a brilliant driven cross from Rolser led to Dowie heading in. There were 84 minutes on the clock when the same pair combined again. This time it was Dowie providing; pouncing on a loose ball and squaring it to Rolser who finished on the line. The sight of Beard and his backroom staff on the pitch celebrating illustrated exactly what the goal meant. In the opposing dugout there was only disappointment. "We gifted them most of their goals; it was a catalogue of errors" a clearly disappointed Emma Hayes said of her side's performance. "At 2-0 my only worry was it was early in the game. If you score three away from home you should be getting something but it didn't happen. I think part of my job is changing the culture to a winning one and that's something we are working on." ********************************* Line-ups: Liverpool: Quantrill (Laws 45), Bronze, Engen, Bonner (Easton 65) Schroder, Omarsdottir, Fors (Longhurst 79), Rolser, Williams, Da Costa, Dowie Subs not used: Chappell, Holbrook, Gregorius, Riccio. ENGLAND WOMEN VS UKRAINE 4-0: Post match interviews with Mark Sampson, Jade Moore and Natasha Dow...
The Head Coach switched from the Three Lions' tried and tested 4-3-3 formation to a 4-4-2 diamond for Thursday night's match against Ukraine -- and both of his strikers scored a brace in a 4-0 win. Liverpool's Natasha Dowie scored a goal in each half and Chelsea hotshot Eniola Aluko continued her international purple patch with a second-half double, bringing her tally to seven for the campaign. England have now won all six matches on the road to Canada 2015, scoring 33 goals without reply. In their last qualifier, a 9-0 win over Montenegro in Brighton, the Three Lions opened the scoring inside the opening minute, but Ukraine were always going to prove more stubborn opposition. Ranked 24th in the world and hitherto unbeaten in qualifying, boss Anatoliy Kutsev refused to pack numbers behind the ball, setting up in an adventurous 4-2-4 formation -- and this restricted England to just a handful of chances in the first half. The first real effort came on the quarter-hour mark when Manchester City midfielder Jill Scott fired just past the angle of post and bar from 20 yards. Soon after, Aluko jinked her way into the box but poked her shot straight at Iryna Zvarych. Arsenal right-back Alex Scott then stung the Ukraine goalkeeper's fingers with a near-post effort as England tried to increase the tempo of a largely uneventful opening 45 minutes. At the tip of the diamond, Lianne Sanderson was charged with supplying Dowie and Aluko up front -- and she played in the Chelsea striker either side of Dowie's opener, only for the side-netting and then the goalkeeper to intervene. The breakthrough came five minutes before half time. The ball was worked out to Aluko on the right and she delivered a peach of a cross for Dowie to glance a header into the far corner. Although it had taken 40 minutes, England were worthy of their one-goal lead at the break and within seven minutes of the restart they had effectively racked up their sixth straight win. First, Steph Houghton nudged Fara Williams's free-kick into Aluko's path eight yards from goal and the 27-year-old smashed the ball into the back of the net to double England's lead. Four minutes later it was 3-0, with Houghton again the provider, nodding Williams' corner into Dowie's path and she made no mistake by slamming the ball home. Sampson then called Kelly Smith, her country's record goalscorer, from the bench to replace Sanderson for her first piece of competitive action since last summer's Euros. Her introduction was followed by a fourth goal less than 60 seconds later. Aluko outpaced the Ukraine defence to latch onto a through ball from midfield, rounded the advancing Zvarych and slid the ball into an empty net for her ninth goal in her last eight starts. Daria Apanashchenko threatened to breach the England rearguard for the first time in this campaign, but Arsenal goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain got down well to repel the shot and deny the visitors a late consolation. England's remaining qualifiers are all away from home, against Belarus, Ukraine, Wales and Montenegro -- but if they carry on this vein, they will soon only have one destination in mind; Canada. England (4-4-2): 1 Siobhan Chamberlain (Arsenal); 2 Alex Scott (Arsenal), 5 Steph Houghton (C; Manchester City), 6 Lucy Bronze (Liverpool), 3 Demi Stokes (South Florida Bulls); 4 Fara Williams (Liverpool), 8 Jill Scott (Manchester City), 7 Jade Moore (Birmingham City), 10 Lianne Sanderson (Boston Breakers); 9 Eniola Aluko (Chelsea), 11 Natasha Dowie (Liverpool). LIVERPOOL VS MANCHESTER CITY 1-0: Goals and highlights from the FAWSL
LIVERPOOL boss Matt Beard believes his side could have helped themselves to more goals after handing newcomers Manchester City defeat in their first-ever Women's Super League match on Thursday. Natasha Dowie -- the WSL's top scorer last year -- broke the deadlock for the champions after Kate Longhurst had a goal chalked off for handball in the first half. "I was pleased that we won, Natasha took her goal very well and maybe on another night if we had a bit more composure in front of goal we could have got a few more," said Beard. "You've got to stay focussed and do your jobs and we didn't do that which gave them a bit of momentum for a period but overall I'm pleased with the three points. "From our perspective we've had bad injuries in pre-season which has affected the squad, so for us it means we can play with no pressure and just enjoy it." Liverpool came flying out the blocks and could have gone in front after just four minutes, but Dowie steered Fara Williams' header wide. They went closer still after the ball rebounded off Longhurst and into the net from Andrea Worrall's attempted clearance, but referee Amy Fearn ruled handball against the striker. And just before half time it was City's turn to spring forward as forward Isobel Christiansen forced a fine stop out of Libby Stout. After the restart Gemma Davison saw a close-range effort cleared off the line for the hosts, before Amanda DaCosta, Dowie and Williams all missed chances. Then on 71 minutes Dowie latched onto a through ball from Lucy Bronze before slotting the ball past the on-rushing Worrall. Toni Duggan hit a rasping shot in the closing stages but Stout was equal to the effort as Liverpool held on for the three points. And despite the loss, City first-team manager Nick Cushing insists his side displayed all the elements of a team that can challenge the very best in the WSL. "We're disappointed but we're happy with the way that we've shown we can be competitive," he said. "We knew they were going to come at us in the first half, we knew they were going to press us, we knew that they were really going to put us under pressure. "But we saw that first half pressure out, we stuck together -- we were resilient and then I felt we took the game to them and because of that we're disappointed we haven't scored." LIVERPOOL VS SUNDERLAND 6-0: Goals and highlights Continental Cup 2014
LIVERPOOL Ladies manager Matt Beard insists Natasha Dowie's match-winning performance is a warning sign to their rivals that when given the service she is a lethal weapon in front of goal. The 25-year-old scored a hat-trick as Liverpool got their first FA WSL Continental Cup victory of the season against Sunderland Ladies -- Gemma Davidson, Corina Schroder and Katrin Omarsdottir also scoring. Injuries had threatened to disrupt Liverpool's start to the season but the link-up between Dowie and Fara Williams, as well as the overall attacking display put on by his side will please Beard. And with more luck coming their way at the Select Security Stadium on this occasion, Beard insists he is looking for his side to continue providing Dowie with such great scoring opportunities. "It took us a while to get things to click in front of goal and I'm glad that they did," said Beard. "Some of our football at times was fantastic and we thoroughly deserved the six that we got and maybe we could have had a couple more. "We've had a lot of injuries which have disrupted what we're doing, we've got a new front three. It's taken us a little bit of time but we're always confident with our ability and that we can create goals. "It is just about taking chances and we got that bit of luck that we needed. "Natasha deserves a lot of praise because she's been getting in good positions but she hasn't had the service, and she's proved that when she gets it she'll put it in the net." Goals from Davidson, Schroder and Dowie's first saw Liverpool 3-0 up after just 21 minutes, while Dowie's second gave the hosts a 4-0 lead at the break. Dowie completed her hat-trick just after the hour mark, with Omarsdottir adding a sixth late on, and Sunderland assistant manager Melanie Rey insists her side must learn from playing against such quality. "Overall we worked hard but it wasn't anywhere near the required standard," said Rey. "Tactically we made some changes and pinpointed areas we needed to improve in, but they knew that the first-half just wasn't good enough or acceptable. "All we can take from it is a massive learning curve and go back to our league campaign and focus on getting promoted to play against quality teams like Liverpool week in week out," said Rey. "Obviously we've got one more game to come with Doncaster Belles in the Continental Cup and we've got a good 12 days off now so we'll regroup, train hard and try and get back that momentum that we had."
