Iraq conflict: Images purport to show 'MASSACRE' by militants | BREAKING NEWS - 15 JUNE 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/ZakWorldNEWS The Sunni extremist group that has taken territory across Iraq has posted photos online that appear to show its fighters massacring Iraqi soldiers. The army personnel are pictured being led away and then lying in trenches before and after their "execution". Iraqi military spokesman Lt Gen Qassim al-Moussawi said the pictures were authentic and depicted events in Salahuddin province. But the images' authenticity has not been independently confirmed. The BBC's Jim Muir, in northern Iraq, says if the photographs are genuine, it would be by far the biggest single atrocity since the time of the American-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. Their emergence came as the Iraqi government claimed to have "regained the initiative" against the offensive by Sunni rebels led by ISIS - the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant. Extremists captured key cities, including Mosul and Tikrit, last week, but several towns have now been retaken from the rebels. 'Taken to their deaths' The pictures, apparently posted by ISIS, are said to show what happened to soldiers after the group took over an army base in Tikrit following the surrender of the garrison there. Video footage, apparently filmed earlier, shows many hundreds of men being marched off from near the Speicher base, with the voice on tape saying they were soldiers who had surrendered at the facility. Still photographs show large numbers of young men being transported away in trucks. Captions on the photographs, which again appeared to have been issued by ISIS, said they were being taken away to their deaths. What appear to be ISIS fighters are seen firing on their captives in some images. Breaking News-Sunni insurgents make Iraq gains as army flees Mosul
June 11 - Sunni insurgents extend their control over Iraq's second biggest city, Mosul, forcing the the army to effectively flee the city. unni rebels from an al Qaeda splinter group overran the Iraqi city of Tikrit on Wednesday and closed in on the biggest oil refinery in the country, making further gains in their rapid military advance against the Shi'ite-led government. The threat to the Baiji refinery comes after militants from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) seized the northern city of Mosul, advancing their aim of creating a Sunni Caliphate straddling the border between Iraq and Syria. The fall of Mosul, Iraq's second biggest city, is a blow to Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's attempts to defeat the militants, who have seized territory in Iraq over the past year following the withdrawal of U.S. forces. About 500,000 Iraqis have fled Mosul, home to 2 million people, and the surrounding province, many seeking safety in the autonomous Kurdistan region. Insurgents are now in control of between 10 and 15 pct of Iraqi territory, excluding Kurdistan. Security sources said ISIL militants on Wednesday drove more than 60 vehicles into Tikrit, the home town of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, occupying the provincial government headquarters and raising the black flag of ISIL. "Our forces were caught by surprise, they never expected ISIL would use police and army Humvee vehicles, we mistook them for government forces and it was too late to stop them," said a police captain who fled from Tikrit to Samarra. "We are fighting devils and not ordinary people". Around 100 ISIL fighters held mass prayers in central Tikrit after taking control. Militants Post Graphic Photos of Mass Killing in Iraq For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/BBCWORLDNEWS10 The Islamic militants who overran cities and towns in Iraq last week posted graphic photos that appeared to show their gunmen massacring scores of captured Iraqi soldiers, while the prime minister vowed Sunday to "liberate every inch" of captured territory. The pictures on a militant website appear to show masked fighters of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIL, loading the captives onto flatbed trucks before forcing them to lie face-down in a shallow ditch with their arms tied behind their backs. The final images show the bodies of the captives soaked in blood after being shot at several locations. Chief military spokesman Lt. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi confirmed the photos' authenticity and said he was aware of cases of mass murder of captured Iraqi soldiers in areas held by ISIL. He told The Associated Press that an examination of the images by military experts showed that about 170 soldiers were shot to death by the militants after their capture. Captions on the photos showing the soldiers after they were shot say "hundreds have been liquidated," but the total could not immediately be verified. U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the ISIL militants' claim of killing the Iraqi troops "is horrifying and a true depiction of the bloodlust that those terrorists represent." She added that a claim that 1,700 were killed could not be confirmed by the U.S. On Friday, U.N. human rights chief Navi Pillay warned against "murder of all kinds" and other war crimes in Iraq, saying the number killed in recent days may run into the hundreds. She said in a statement that her office had received reports that militants rounded up and killed Iraqi soldiers as well as 17 civilians in a single street in Mosul. Her office also heard of "summary executions and extrajudicial killings" after ISIL militants overran Iraqi cities and towns, she said. The grisly images could sap the morale of Iraq's security forces, but they could also heighten sectarian tensions. Thousands of Shiites are already heeding a call from their most revered spiritual leader to take up arms against the Sunni militants who have swept across the north in the worst instability in Iraq since the U.S. withdrawal in 2011. ISIL has vowed to take the battle to Baghdad and cities farther south housing revered Shiite shrines. IRAQ militants control second city of Mosul | BREAKING NEWS - 10 JUNE 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/ZakWorldNEWS Iraq's prime minister has asked parliament to declare a state of emergency after Islamist militants effectively took control of Mosul. Nouri Maliki acknowledged "vital areas" of the country's second largest city had been seized. Overnight, hundreds of armed men seized local government's offices and police stations before taking control of the airport and the army's headquarters. About 150,000 people are thought to have fled the city. Authorities have set up camps for them in three nearby towns. Elsewhere, a double bomb attack in the central town of Baquba killed at least 20 people, police and medics said. The blasts, targeting a funeral procession, also wounded 28 people. In the past week, the jihadist Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) and its allies have carried out major attacks on cities and towns in western and northern Iraq, killing scores of people. 'Maximum alert' The BBC's Jim Muir in Beirut says militants from ISIS have been informally controlling much of Nineveh province for months, imposing tolls on the movement of goods and demanding protection money from local officials. After five days of fighting, they took control of key installations in Mosul, which has a population of about 1.8 million. Prime Minister Nouri Maliki, who is struggling to form a government in the wake of the April elections, has vowed to drive the ISIS "terrorists" out of mainly-Sunni Mosul in short order. He is unlikely to succeed soon. He made similar vows when Sunni militants took over Falluja, west of Baghdad, in January, and they are still there. It is not yet clear whether it is only ISIS involved in the Mosul takeover. In Falluja and its province, Anbar, Mr Maliki has clearly alienated many Sunni tribesmen and others, creating fertile soil for the radicals. Iraq crisis: Islamists force 500,000 to flee Mosul | BREAKING NEWS - 11 JUNE 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/ZakWorldNEWS As many as 500,000 people have been forced to flee the Iraqi city of Mosul after Islamist militants effectively took control of it, the International Organization for Migration says. Troops were among those fleeing as hundreds of jihadists from the ISIS group overran the city and much of the surrounding province of Nineveh. ISIS has now reportedly taken Baiji, home to Iraq's largest oil refinery. PM Nouri Maliki has asked parliament to declare a state of emergency. The US said the development showed ISIS was a threat to the entire region. ISIS - the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, which is also known as ISIL - is an offshoot of al-Qaeda. It now controls considerable territory in eastern Syria and western and central Iraq, in a campaign to set up a militant enclave straddling the border. 'Chaotic situation' Residents of Mosul - Iraq's second city - said jihadist flags were flying from buildings and that the militants had announced over loudspeakers they had "come to liberate" the city. "The situation is chaotic inside the city, and there is nobody to help us," said government worker Umm Karam. "We are afraid." Many police stations were reported to have been set on fire and hundreds of detainees set free. "The army forces threw away their weapons, changed their clothes, abandoned their vehicles and left the city," Mahmud Nuri, a resident fleeing Mosul, told the AFP news agency. The BBC's Jim Muir says the Iraqi security forces appear to have nothing to fight back against the ISIS militants. Some members of ISIS have also moved on to the nearby town of Baiji, setting the court building and police station on fire and releasing prisoners, according to Reuters news agency. Baiji resident Jasim al-Qaisi told Reuters that the militants phoned tribal leaders in the town and told them: "We are coming to die or control Baiji, so we advise you to ask your sons in the police and army to lay down their weapons and withdraw." Iraq Explained -- ISIS, Syria and War
Iraq Explained -- ISIS, Syria and War
The current crisis in Iraq explained in under 5 minutes. There is war in Iraq? Again? And the US and Iran are talking about working together? And who is this ISIS Terrorist group that is all over the news? And Religion? Oh dear... When exactly has the world gone mad again? It is not possible to explain a complicated topic like this without simplification. We are very aware that this video is not painting a full picture of the situation. But we hope that it may lay the foundation on which you can try to do your own research and understand how horribly Fu**ed up the whole situation is. We did have to produce the video super fast -- thanks a lot to our friends Martin Wackerbauer and Magnus Schlüter for helping us out -- we would not have been able to make this video in time without you guys! Kurzgesagt loves all people as long as they don't hurt others and don't hinder mankind on its quest to the stars. So it was very sad to read so much terrible stuff about the situation in Iraq. Hopefully it will get better. You can get the music of the video here: http://thomasveith.bandcamp.com/track/iraq-explained Videos, explaining things. Like evolution, time, space, global energy or our existence in this strange universe. We are a team of designers, journalists and musicians who want to make science look beautiful. Because it is beautiful.
