ICAN Australia is at the forefront of global efforts to outlaw and eliminate nuclear weapons. With more than 60 diverse partner organisations nationwide, we aim to raise public awareness about the catastrophic humanitarian harm caused by nuclear weapons and put nuclear disarmament squarely on the Australian political agenda.

ICAN Australia released an April 2014 Nielsen poll showing that 84% of Australians want their government to support international efforts for a treaty banning nuclear weapons. Only 3% oppose this goal. The poll result was released as Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop visited Hiroshima for a meeting of the Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Initiative.

A freedom of information investigation by ICAN has revealed why Australia refused to endorse a New Zealand-led disarmament initiative at the United Nations last year. Australia believes that a global ban on nuclear weapons would not be in its security interests.

Nayarit – a point of no return
The Mexico Conference on the Humanitarian Impact of Nuclear Weapons of February 2014 was a fantastic success, with 146 governments, academia and civil society gathered to examine the real-world effects of nuclear weapons. After two days of presentations on the catastrophic and inhumane effects of nuclear weapons, it was impossible to ignore the obvious next step of negotiating a treaty to ban them. The Austrian Foreign Minister announced the Austrian Government’s decision to host a follow-up conference before the end of 2014 to lay the framework for the next steps.
