A shark attack is an attack on a human by a shark. Every year around 100 shark attacks are reported worldwide. Seventeen fatalities were recorded as having being caused by shark attacks in 2011, out of 118 recorded attacks. Despite their relative rarity, many people fear shark attacks after occasional serial attacks, such as the Jersey Shore shark attacks of 1916, and horror fiction and films such as the Jaws series. Almost all shark experts consider that the danger presented by sharks has been exaggerated. The creator of the Jaws phenomenon, Peter Benchley, attempted to dispel the myth of sharks being man-eating monsters in the years before his death. Contrary to popular belief, only a few sharks are dangerous to humans. Out of more than 480 shark species, only three are responsible for two-digit number of fatal unprovoked attacks on humans: the great white, tiger and bull; however, the oceanic whitetip has probably killed many more castaways, not recorded in the statistics. These sharks, being large, powerful predators, may sometimes attack and kill people; however, they have all been filmed in open water by unprotected divers. The 2010 French film Oceans shows footage of humans swimming next to sharks deep in the ocean. It is possible that the sharks are able to sense the presence of unnatural elements on or about the divers, such as polyurethane diving suits and air tanks, which may lead them to accept temporary outsiders as more of a curiosity than prey. Uncostumed humans, however, such as those surfboarding, light snorkeling, or swimming, present a much greater area of open meaty flesh to carnivorous shark predators. In addition, the presence of even small traces of blood, recent minor abrasions, cuts, scrapes, or bruises, may convince sharks to attack a human in their environment. Some sharks such as the hammerhead shark seek out prey through electroreception, sensing the electric fields that are generated by all animals due to the activity of their nerves and muscles. Most of the oceanic whitetip shark's attacks have not been recorded, unlike the other three species mentioned above. Famed oceanographic researcher Jacques Cousteau described the oceanic whitetip as "the most dangerous of all sharks". Modern-day statistics show the oceanic whitetip shark as being seldom involved in unprovoked attacks. However, there have been a number of attacks involving this species, particularly during World War I and World War II. The oceanic whitetip lives in the open sea and rarely shows up near coasts, where most recorded incidents occur. During the world wars, many ship and aircraft disasters happened in the open ocean, and due to its former abundance, the oceanic whitetip was often the first species on site when such a disaster happened. Infamous examples of oceanic whitetip attacks include the sinking of the Nova Scotia, a British steamship carrying 1,000 people, that was sunk on 28 November 1942 near South Africa by a German submarine in World War II. Only 192 people survived, with many deaths attributed to the oceanic whitetip shark. The same species is probably responsible for many of the of the 60--80 or more shark casualties following the torpedoing of the USS Indianapolis on 30 July 1945. Tiger sharks may also have been involved. In addition to the four species responsible for a significant number of fatal attacks on humans, a number of other species have attacked humans without being provoked, and have on extremely rare occasions been responsible for a human death. This group includes the shortfin mako, hammerhead, Galapagos, gray reef, blacktip reef, lemon, silky, and blue sharks. These sharks are also large, powerful predators which can be provoked simply by being in the water at the wrong time and place, but they are normally considered less dangerous to humans than the previous group. A few other shark species do attack people every year, producing wounds that can potentially kill, but this occurs either specifically because they have been provoked, or through mistaken identity due to water conditions or the like. In the evening of 16 March 2009, a new addition was made to the list of sharks known to attack human beings. In a painful but not directly life-threatening incident, a long-distance swimmer crossing the Alenuihaha Channel between the islands of Hawai'i and Maui was attacked by a cookiecutter shark. The 2 bites, delivered about 15 seconds apart, were not immediately life-threatening. A great white shark is believed to be responsible for an attack on a swimmer at Muriwai Beach in Auckland, New Zealand in February 2013. It was the first confirmed shark attack fatality in the country since 1976.

Tarpon fishing under Long Key bridge near Duck Key, Fl. After a 20 minute fight with a tarpon, a 14 foot long hammer head shark attacks and eventually eats the tarpon. We tried our best to protect the tarpon by running it down and creating as much noise and bubbles to confuse the shark and hide the tarpon. After a quick release, the shark returns and I aggressively circle the tarpon as the shark slices at it boat side. After about 5 hits, the shark wins and swims off with the tarpon in its mouth. Moments later, half of the 65lb tarpon floats up and I grab the remains to add to the documentation. The shark returns on a high speed pass and bumps the boat with significant enough force to make Julie scream. I give up on the carcass and Corey gets his hands on it just as the hammer head shark strikes again, this time claiming the remains of his dinner. As this massive shark rolls into a dive, Corey gets a tail grab before it is all over. Conservative size estimations are 14 feet long at about 400lbs. This is the best shark attack footage I have ever seen. This was recorded in HD and is available for resale.

Another shark attack in Hawaii, 2nd shark attack this week, a teenage surfer's legs were bit by a shark just days after a female German tourist was attacked while snorkeling. The first shark attack happened in Maui, Hawaii while the surfer was attacked in Hilo, Hawaii. Also in Today's Wildlife news, 40 pythons were found in a motel and a black bear was caught on film after it broke into a house in Florida. Last weeks shark attack victim, the German tourist, has been identified as Jana Lutterropp. The 20 year old had her arm bitten off by an unidentified shark while snorkeling. It was a 57 year old gym teacher from California, Rick Moore, who came to her rescue putting on flippers and swam over 300 feet into the ocean after hearing her screams. Blood was all over the water when he made it out to her as he risked getting attacked himself and he brought her back to shore. On Sunday marked the 9th shark attack in Hawaii this year as 16 year old surfer, Jimmy Napeahi, suffered severe leg injuries as an 8 foot grey colored shark bit him while riding a wave just southeast of Hilo. A nearby surfer witness the attack as he saw the large shark come after Jimmy from behind. The shark attack was unusual as it came at 1:30pm, a time of day that is usually safe for surfers. SHARK ATTACK - One of the rare shark attack video caught on tape. I felt something grab my leg and jerk me," recalled Heather Boswell, a 19-year-old Seattleite who had signed on for a six-month term working in the galley of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration research ship Discoverer. Boswell and several of her shipmates were taking a break, swimming in balmy waters some 300 miles east of Easter Island. What she believes was a great white shark first chomped the legs of a seaman swimming nearby, opening wounds that would require more than 50 stitches; as it turned out, he got off easy. Quickly grabbing first Boswell's right leg and then her left, the shark pulled her under, shaking her violently like a dog with a rag doll. When the fish resurfaced, two of Boswell's colleagues in a skiff grabbed her arms while another beat the shark with a stick. Boswell felt her left leg pop. "I thought it was my hip dislocating," she said. Only when the crew pulled her up into the boat did she look down and realize that her leg now ended at midthigh. The shark then headed for another person dangling in the water from a ladder, but shots fired by crewmen on the ship evidently drove it away. Shark Attacks German Tourist in Hawaii - Bites off Arm!

UPDATE! http://youtu.be/FW51bWtMFWw 20 year old German girl had an encounter with an unidentified shark 150 feet off the shore of White Rock beach in Maui, Hawaii around 5pm on Wednesday. The shark attacked her while she was snorkeling and chewed off her arm just below the shoulder. The girl was unconscious after the bite and was taken to Maui Memorial Hospital by her 2 friends and a bystander in a kayak. As of today the girl's name has not been released but she appears to be in stable condition and looks like she'll survive. Hawaii had 11 shark attacks last year, the most in over a decade, but Hawaii has not had a fatal shark attack since 2004 when a surfer died after being bitten by a tiger shark 300 feet from the shore in Maui. While tiger sharks are one of the most deadly sharks to humans, reports are suspecting it was an ocean whitetip that attacked the girl. If you are going to swim at a beach that has any danger of sharks, it's best to have others around you and you should always avoid the water at dusk or dawn.
